Tried a pour of DeLeon reposado in Vegas past week. Damn tasty. Could make me a tequila fan. But the price is high at 125 per bottle.

A fine distillery. Go get Reserva de Mexico. Same distillery and got bought out of it when DeLeon started gaining a bit of steam. They were very similar to me...just RdM is $100 cheaper.

Hi Time has the repo too for $16. Both close outs. Whoever buys can thank me later. :)

Anybody tried Corzo anejo? Ratings on the web are all over the place.

Made by the same people as Cazadores. It's fine, but at the price I'd definitely go with something else. However, if you buy you probably won't be disappointed. It all depends on what's in your area.

Thanks, Max. I need to do some more scouting.

  • 3 weeks later...

My brother picked up a bottle of Crotalo Anejo for me but I won't be picking it up until I visit him later this month. I've heard it's good stuff.

Picked up some Espolon blanco on a solid recommendation. Enjoying some wonderful margaritas tonight with the wife!

Salud! (late)

Espolon is one of those really nice consistent brands that you can generally find for $25 or under. In places like the frozen north where selection is spotty, it's nice to have a good/cheap option.

Nice complexity from the barrel while not losing the agave flavor. The entire line is good, but the añejo is probably the best value for the money of the group.

Don Pilar XA - man this is some fine drinking!

Top 5 tequila for me. The cognac finish makes it unique...and really delicious.

So, Max, what are your top 5 tequilas (or top 10 for that matter!)? TIA

Top 10 must try tequilas for me:

1. Corrido - Discontinued, but great value for the money.

2. Fortaleza - Well crafted and traditional. Tahona crushed. Great bottles and flavor.

3. Tapatio - Traditionally crafted brand. Great to do a vertical tasting with. The Excellencia is amazing.

4. Don Pilar - Añejo is awesome and well priced at $40. The XA is unique and exceptional.

5. Siete Leguas - Another great brand to do a vertical with. Simply delicious

6. Alma - Maybe the best value out there at $30 and under

7. ArteNOM - They chose 3 great distilleries of 1580/1414/1146 and did their own spin.

8. Sol de Mexico

9. Calle 23 - Another great value for the whole line.

10. Muchote - From NOM 1414 and maybe my favorite reposado for the money at $25. Can compete with tequilas at twice the price with great balance of agave and light barrel flavors.

This could change from week to week, but this should give you a good idea of what to look out for. If my bar only had those 10 brands for the rest of my life, I would be happy. Honorable mention to Suerte Tequila as well.

Had a late night Siete Leguas reposado to accompany a bottle of Bohemia after coming home from my son's Little League game. (Two innings pitched: 1 hit, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts, the last to end the game!) Such a great brand all the way around that you can't go wrong with any of their products.

Glad to help. Just make sure to stop buying before you it gets completely out of hand like it did for me. ;)

This is the brand I get family to bring back from Mexican vacations...

Siete Leguas reposado is true nectar, as is their anejo. Don't think I've ever had the blanco, but all three are available here in Chicago for under $40 which is hard to beat. You need a Michigan or Wisconsin trip to stock up!

Pura Vida line. Thoughts folks? I've actually come across very few on-line reviews despite Billy Gibbons association with the brand.

It's made at NOM 1414 which is a favorite of mine, but it's also triple distilled which takes a little bit of the oomph out of the blanco compared to other products from the same place for me. However, the añejo is aged really nicely and has very nice complexities. I'd definitely recommend that one the most, but all of the tequila from there are probably above average. The XA is good, but is the loser of the bunch because of the high price tag. For me...

1. añejo

2. repo

3. blanco

4. XA

If you can snag the añejo for around $40, it's a buy.

I have not tried it but if you do so please do report! Max likely has some thoughts as he liked this line and likes this distillery in general. I think the only one routinely available from 1414 to me is the Arte Nom reposado and even that is hard to find.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll grab the anejo and repo for now and get the blanco sometime down the line. Bummed to discover that Muchote is no longer showing up on HTWC's site, as I planned to pick up a few more bottles for the summer months.

wAT? I know that the website went down and it went off the NOM list. It must be discontinued. Time to stock up!!!

Thanks to Max and a few other tequila nerds I am now addicted to the Tapatio Excelencia. This stuff is simply amazing.

If you get a chance, hit the Tap 110, too (especially if you like CS stuff). I cant wait to try it in a margarita on a hot summer day (but it does seem a tad "blasphemous" putting such a good tequila in a mixed drink).
