We were coming off the line for the last time after a 9-month deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin and the Captain, against all U.S.naval regulations, had distributed two bottles of "champagne" to each ready room for officers only parties. Two flight surgeons contributed RY to fortify it an a punch bowl. I've never had it since but maybe I should.1) thank you for your service.2) take Joe's advice and steer clear of RY and its (slightly) older brother Rebel Reserve. There are plenty of choices-even wheaters-in that price range that blow the doors off those. Weller SR, Antique 107 and Weller 12 to name three. I need to amend this after last night. A friend brought a bottle of TX Whiskey (blended whiskey) to our Super Bowl party. This stuff was terrible. The nose smelled like soggy s'mores covered in hairspray and the palate and finish followed suit with similar flavors. Strange how stores here in TX can barely keep this stuff on the shelves... Local product that shouts the name across the bottle, whether it is appropriate or not, combined with a buying public with limited discrimination in taste that is probably mostly drinking for effect mixed with Coca Cola or some other favorite mixer allows for booming local sales I presume. Luckily I can avoid all the garbage thanks to the internet, but my two least favorite were Jim Beam White and Ancient Age. I've had TONS of awful white dog, flavored whiskey, blended American, etc...
