What bourbon are you drinking - Fall 2013

Finishing up a really great evening with a neat pour of Bowman Last Millenium. I have generally found the older 14 yearish Bowman's to be entirely too hot and astringent to my liking, but this bottle is settling in nicely with me. Big oakiness, for sure. But, not as uncomfortable as the others. I am finding this bottle to be quite enjoyable.

I may be the biggest fan of this on the board. It is a really fantastically constructed whiskey, and upon proper scrutiny it really blows John J. Out of the water with complexity and drinkability.

Tonight I'm continuing the Stagg 2013 experiment, and by GEORGE I think we may have it. 1.5 oz. in the glass, 6 drops of water. Let it mingle with water and air for 15 minutes and I'm finally seeing Stagg like I should. Leather, cloves, dark chocolate, wasabi, wax and wood. I'm so damn excited to be having a good experience, so disregard my enthusiasm for today. But it does seem like this guy may not be a lost cause.

bourbon and cigar night. A taste of pritchards double. Woody and young at the same time.. Followed with some WTRB, and at home I popped a bottle of Jim beam distillers select, good stuff. Finishing the night with a pour of Henry Mckenna BIB 10 yr as its the bourbon of the month.

SBS BIB night with VOB BIB, Old HH Gold BIB, and HH 6yr BIB. VOB BIB is by far the favorite of the night with HH 6yr after that...gold label HH a distant 3rd. I also thought I might detect some similarities between the HH's and Black Maple Hill NAS so I tried a little BMH too. There definitely is a resemblance but the BMH has more wood. I might have to put the HH 6yr ahead of the BMH. Still the gold label HH is last...just not enjoying the oily corniness from that one tonight

You have me all fired up to try the Millennium now! Lucky enough to find a bottle while visiting The Trail a few weeks ago (thanks to Eric). I love the Bowman Single Barrel so can't wait to try this.

I truly hope you enjoy it. Opinions are mixed, but I suspect that's because some people drink it and some people talk about it.

Now I'm trying a small vatting I mingled last week. Close to equal parts Four Roses 120th, 2013 single barrel, and gift shop OESO 12 year. It's a little cumbersome, but really interesting. It's "barrel proof four roses" through and through. Kinda shows how easy, and also very difficult, Rutledge's job is. Their product is damn good, and often harmonious, so it's hard to screw it up. But, he really knows how to play the instruments toward orchestral triumph.

I wasn't on board with the superlatives awarded to the 2012 SmB, even though it was good. This is the best I've has so far this year. The BTAC has yet to drop here, but it will have to be pretty outstanding to top this.

Two years in a row would be very impressive, but I haven't seen anything else on the market to think otherwise.

Old standby FRSB last night--delicious as always. Then a pour of Old Fitz 1849--not the best bourbon, a little thin and a little hot, but perfectly serviceable for $16 a bottle.

A friend and I had a couple of smokes and dug into a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Reserve. Super nice - will miss this bottle when it's gone...

Did a little mini-tasting for a few friends. '81 ND OT86/6, '78 Benchmark, and a '70 S-W old fritz prime 86.8. The benchmark was amazing! The OFP needs to breath some--finish was kind of musty...

A little KBD investigation tonight. Johnny Drum Private Stock followed by Rowan's Creek. Conclusions:

1) Willett FE is the way to go with those products.

2) have an unopened Noah's Mill so jury out on that one.

3) Rowan's Creek NAS is very drinkable at around $30 for a 100+ proofer decent QPR but would probably go ETL in that price range.

4) Johnny Drum.....hot, astringent, and pass.
