The staff is just great, from everyone at the gift shop to the people in the office when you contact them for this that or the other thing. They are the only distillery that I have brought down a Michigan gift basket because they are just so great.

That's cool Tony.

Tell us what was in the basket and their reaction to it.

Seems it has a die hard following here, I have a bottle of single barrel and small batch not opened yet cause I have too many other things opened, is it really that good? Also if it's so good in a world of over priced and price Gouching how or why is it priced at $30 to $40 a bottle?

welcome bNc!

I grew up in Skokie.

the 4R regular small batch is fantastic juice, even more so at its price point. I'd open it sooner rather than later.

you're lucky to have a great Binny's nearby; their glass cabinets are usually full of good stuff.

Price paid is often

not an indicator of the quality contained in the bottle. Your palate is the ultimate judge for you. Mine is damn glad they exist and I gladly acquire

and enjoy rather than question why.I simply smile and say thank you.

Do you guys really, honestly like the Yellow Label? I can't put my finger on why I dislike it so much.

Agreed. 4RYL is the only 80 proof whiskey I enjoy and I really like it. I only buy a bottle once a month because when I do I just go through it way too fast.

The only other sub 90 proof whiskey I enjoy is the yearly EWSB offerings. Go through them real fast too.

Both are just so easy sipping and the flavor just continues to develop the longer the bottle is opened.

Just goes to show that everyone is different. I honestly don't know why I don't like the FRYL. I bought two bottles when it first became available in my part of Ohio. I disliked it so much I just gave my brother the unopened bottle...lol. I was able to get through the opened bottle by mixing it with Bulleit, at the suggestion of another member here.

I agree about the Small Batch. I find it to be inconsistent. Some are very good and others are just so, so.

I also like Four Roses.. The regular Single Barrel bottlings are priced at $39.99 around my part of Florida.. I have yet to have a bottle I did not like..

Creggor

Same here. Although I think I have had bottles I've liked more than others.

I've had some bottles of Four Roses single barrel that were very nice and some I thought less so, to the extent I'm not interested unless there was a local store with their own pick that I could sample first.

Afternoon Oscar-

One time I brought them a bunch of small cans of Vernor's Ginger ale along with some Germack peanuts, pistachios and local honey and some maple syrup. The next time I got them Vernors again along with a bunch of local potato chips and some Germack snack mix. Both of these times I gave them to the office folks and they really seemed to enjoy a little local Michigan flavor.

This year I brought them a tray of Backlava from Shatilla in Dearborn and gave it to the folks in the gift shop. They seemed to really appreciate this and said there is not a lot of this in the area so were looking forward to it.

They are just really great people and I appreciate the product they provide and want to give them a little taste of Michigan when I get a chance.

Best regards, Tony

I am a Four Roses fanatic. I have managed to collect all ten single barrel receipes in barrel strength - and they are great for hosting tastings. I also managed to score multiple bottles of the 125th SmB (yessss) and of the 2014 LE SB. What I have discovered is that, unless I am wanting to taste DIFFERENCES, there is nothing to beat the standard single barrel offering. It is 100 proof OBSV and always delicious. Many of the barrel strength offerings are 115-120 proof (20% higher) but cost much, much more than that!

As many have mentioned, the distillery staff is first rate!

Meijer near me used to carry: single barrel, small batch, and yellow label. They were a buck or two cheaper than anyone else around too. What did they replace it with; a bunch of flavored garbage in jars and overpriced NDP nonsense that I will never buy. :smiley_acbt:I feel like emailing some one that was involved in the change, to share my feelings. Anyway, I have a question for the big 4R fans. If I really like Small Batch, which of the 10 recipes should I look for? I'm thinking it may be something with the E mash bill.

The OESK I have has a definite tobacco note to it and the OESO to my palate is the what I call "buttery" component of the Smb. I too am a big Smb fan and it was fun to deconstruct the Smb and try to identify the component parts. I don't get tobacco from Smb but stand alone that's what jumps out from the SB version. OBSO is a favorite of mine in SB form, a lot of plums/cherries/raspberries, a delicious pour.

We are 111 posts into this subject and no one has mentioned secret handshakes.

I do think t-shirts were mentioned though.

Can we get someone to draw up a crest for this 4R Cult?

Feel the same way - pound for pound the stock 4R SB is pretty awesome - yet I buy all the BS ones as well

These are interesting points. I've had an older OESQ that was my favorite selection for the longest time. It was from 2011 or something, one of the first private selections they did (according to 4R and the store). My conventional wisdom was that I avoided OBSV PS because I could always get the standard for $40 if I wanted. That being said, I picked up an OBSV PS a few months ago and it BLEW ME AWAY. I bought one for myself and one for a friend and it was like he was thinking the same thing. I got a text from him saying the new PS was the best bourbon he's ever had at the exact same time I was tasting mine. I still love it. I just purchased an "F" recipe PS anticipating not being able to find the 2014 LE. I'm hoping to try it by this weekend!

I've always wanted to try the F yeast. Please post your thoughts after you try it.

Anybody happen to order/open the new D&M Wine-selected OESO? I don't have a bottling of either O variant and was curious on this one.

Question for you FR cultists: Which Four Roses proper product does Bulleit 10 most closely resemble (if any)? I like the Bulleit 10 enough, there's nothing not to like really, but I didn't find it great either. I didn't get that velvety, buttery mouthfeel I like, it seemed kind of thin (maybe that's the high rye?) to me. If they don't compare at all, fair enough, just thought I'd ask given Bulleit's current genealogy to FR.

It's ten year old yellow label. Slightly Higher proof and a lot more money

As for me none. Love me some 4R but just don't care for Bulleit.

I second this...

I haven't met an OESO that I don't like.
