I've seen The Duncan Taylor at our local TW. Kinda pricey at mid 100's. It must be nectar of the gods! :)

Let us know what you think of the Guadeloupe when you get a chance...

I'm in Washington, but have a friend who works across the street from the Hollywood K&L, she's kind enough to ship me stuff.

I actually think the juice in the Duncan Taylor may be the same (though bottled younger) as the Golden Devil. Both are from Bellevue and have a distillation date of 03/1998.

The DT was a gift. I don't think I would pay that much, however some of the best rums I've ever had were bottled by them.

Interesting that the Bellevue DT has a Total Wine sticker. Astor has/had a similar bottle at very slightly higher proof (105.4 is what i have in my list). But it does sound like it must be similar rum but at a better price. Maybe it hasn't sold well and DT is trying to move it however they can.

If you look at total wine, they've got two DT rum selections with their own sticker, Bellevue and  " A blend of 5 Caribbean Rum Distilleries: Bellevue Rum Distillery, Dillon Rum Distillery, Long Pond Rum Distillery, Monymusk Distillery, and Mount Gay Rum Distillery" that one's 70 and I want it. But I see none in CA so I can't get it because I won't drive 6 hours to Reno to get one.

A curious blend indeed. 2 agricoles, 2 presumably funky Jamaican pot still rums and then Mt Gay. The Mt Gay almost seems out of place!

It does, theoretically in my mind it ties together the disparate flavors of Jamaica and the former French colonies with something still noticeable as classic rum... Or maybe it disappears and is pointless. Either way I want it.

I saw that one on the shelf last week. Not sure if it's still there. I'll have a look, as I'm going by there to pick up another bottle of RL Seale's 10 for $21 on sale. They also have Barbancourt 15 for $40 which is a good price for around here, but I'd rather buy two of the Seale's 10 for that same $40...

Interesting, the Duncan Taylor blend has a bottle date code of September '14 with a TW patched barcode from February '15. Wonder where it's been for the last 3 years?!

I'd say the Mt Gay is going to add the buttery toffee notes, which none of the others have. That's one of the core Bajan rum profiles.

Kind of off topic question, but how do you store your falernum?

I have never had a bottle last long enough to worry about that :D But seriously, you can refrigerate it if you're worried. That said, it is 23ABV so it keeps on the shelf well too. I would think a year with no problem, though some color change may occur.

You only live once. This will be my New Year's pour if I can get the bottle out of the box without breaking something. We tried to get it out at the store, but couldn't-- and they certainly didn't want to push it for liability reasons.

Very nice! Was that from Lincoln Road Package Store too?

No, it was from my local favorite LS. If you're looking for a bottle, I know of another one nearby. I'm going to resort to using a Dremel tool to get the bottle out tomorrow-- not the best situation.

Does the black thing below the bottle slide out, allowing the bottle to drop down out of the metal cap? Just brainstorming, good luck getting it open.

Oh wow, nice! Just curious what exactly is wrong with the box? Can't really tell from the photo.

Nothing was wrong with the box. I went back to the store this morning and luckily there was an employee who remembered seeing the bottle being removed from the box when it had arrived over a year ago. Her tip allowed me to removed the bottle, only to find the removal instructions hidden directly behind the bottle. Apparently the guy who removed it initially-- put the instructions back in first prior to replacing the bottle.

Drove over to Woodinville to do wine tasting, also tasted at a few distilleries and found one making a pretty good rum

fvGsS8L5GBEPOkFFjjkNT8oA6gF9NuPYJY0Hg1qX

It's unaged, but fairly smooth. They're using a double retort Jamaican style pot still with the high and low wines re-used in the retorts. They're doing a single distillation to about 84% alcohol and then bottling at 47%. It's $30, which is steep for a white rum, but there aren't many examples of 100% pot still white rums that I can think of out there.

So I got irritated with myself only getting one criterion which I finished too fast because it's one of my favorite spirits I've ever had and I took too long on getting one at a good price. So I just ordered 2 at a mediocre price, 90 per bottle

You will enjoy the delishiousity of the Criterion much longer than the initial sting of paying the few extra dollars!
