ThirstyinOhio...

I like the idea of hosting a bourbon tasting party. Great that you guys do that. I'd love to do that here in NJ if I found or met gents interested in the bourbon sampling get togethers.

That seems like a nice way to enjoy bourbon, meet new friends and gain knowledge from different palates- both likes and dislikes.

I've only been to Ohio once a few years ago. Don't know if I'll ever get there anytime soon, but if I do, I'll message you. Thanks

Bunker = 30-40 bottles with a few duplicates . . .

Current go to or open bottles = approx 12 bottles . . .

If I see something rare or desired, I buy one or two and leave the rest . . . cheers . . . Wally

I'm at around 120.  At first I bought one of most of the major labels so I could try as many things as possible in hopes of finding one brand that had outstanding characteristics in a category that I could hope to find regularly at stores and enjoy long term, I.e. Best under $30 daily drinker (I love regular BT), accessible aged barrel proof (ECBP if I'm keeping my eyes open and actually hunting), Wheater (MMCS), etc.  And eventually have a small lineup of usual suspects to go along with special occasion pours

In doing so I've discovered the magic of store picks and have accumulated multiple FR recipes, RR single barrels, tons of SAOS, an a few OWA

ThirstyInOhio and I have a couple friends we have our tasting parties with (they just joined SB and will hopefully be active here soon) and we've done some bottles splits, which lets you try something for a fraction of the price of a whole bottle.  It's also great because since the bottle is open you're more likely to actually try it.

  • 7 months later...

I thought it was a pretty good time to revisit this thread. My wife was out and about today, so I took advantage of my "alone" time (in between getting some chores done around the house) to do an inventory of my bunker. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

FWIW, I've really tried to pare down my bunker for a while now. In other words, drink/share more, and buy less. I thought I was making some pretty good headway, but after my inventory today, I found out that I only have a -5 bottle difference over the last 6 months.  Damn!

I have a total of 114 bottles. Of those, 8 are open, and 106 are in my bunker. In my total, 15 are 200's or 375's, 7 or 8 are handles or liters, and the rest are 750's. I have 50 wheaters, 30 BIB's and 34 "others".  I reckon I'll just have to try harder in the future. I have a tasting coming up this week, and the KBF is just a few weeks away. I know I'll lose a few bottles at those functions. But then again, I'll probably have to buy a few things during the KBF. It's a vicious circle. What's a mother to do?

Cheers! Joe

I do the same thing Joe. The quality of my collection just gets better though. I bought one of everything when I first started bunkering. I found out what I really like. SB saved me a lot of $ on buying bad bourbons, but cost me a lot of $ on buying good ones. :D

I do an inventory twice a year, upon returning home from Bardstown.  I've got 40 bottles in the bunker (unopened bottles), and 90+ bottles open (although that isn't limited to bourbon).  Like Joe, I've been trying to align my purchasing and consumption in the last year, purchasing fewer bottles (and trying to drink/share more - first world problems!)  I was doing well after last KBF, but have probably just leveled off in terms of bottle counts.

Just inventoried for the first time.  I found 84 bottles of bourbon  including 9 open ones. Funny how the bottles add up when you aren't counting.     I would have guessed I only had 50 or so.     Better get to drinking and sharing more often.

Isn't that the truth ......20 open and 32 in the bunkers

Congrats Joe....a -5 bottle difference in the last six months! Probably not many on SB that can make that claim myself included.  I think I'm at +10 for the month.

In my defense, most were acquired on clearance at a great price.  (Still got the look from the wife tho....)

I NEVER count the bunker.    Much like poker winnings; it's bad luck to check before the game ends.

I know I have more than two, and less than 2,000.    That's as narrow as I'm willing to say.... not wanting to jinx the whole thing, ya know.

I am pretty sure I can admit to more than 2! Not sure I can limit it to 2000 though...

89 total closed bottles now - 61 are American (all bourbon... usually buy rye one at a time and open) and the remainder is Scotch (blends, grain, and single malt). Bear in mind I don't keep more than 4-5 open at once between all types. Just prefer not to open a bottle until I am absolutely certain I'll work through it in a timely fashion.

My plan is to get to 100 and hover around there for my foreseeable adulthood. Open one, buy something different for the bunker. Rinse and repeat. I do suspect that the ratio of American to foreign will get closer to 50/50 as time goes on (or this trend of more expensive bourbon continues).

best laid plans of mice and bourbon drinkers.  lots of large bunkers that ended up large by accident.  I'd like this one, hey, I want that.  Wait, how come I can't get into the basement anymore because of all these boxes?

I only have 22 in the bunker.

The part that surprised me the most was that I just used the word 'only' in that sentence

I have 37 open

None of this includes 50 or 100ml bottles

More than 2 and less than 3. Hundred that is.

Still haven't moved it from storage to the new place. Trying tide idea how to prep the room ahead of time, as the misses said its my space to do with as I please.

Plus, it's a awful lot of work to move.

I can't remember which thread I was on in early August where I admitted even I was embarrassed when I found TWO mixed cases (6 and 8 750s, respectively) under my workbench that I forgot I had.  That's when I swore off buying more, and Paddy gave me moral support by telling me I wouldn't make it to August's end.  Well, I did - all the way to 1 SEP about 10AM when I bought those 4 JB BIB's on sale for $17 each even though I have 3 left over from the LAST sale.

Of bourbon/rye only, I have about 20 open, 6 of which (OGDBIB, JDSiBBP, a Blanton's store pick, Pikesville 110, JBBIB, and a Bookers) are regulars neat right now.  But, like Bruce and some others, I'm loath to actually count.  I fear of embarrassing myself again, thus cutting off the pure, atavistic joy of "acquiring" something I "need".  [THANK YOU, Paddy, for pushing me off my "don't buy" ledge.]  An estimate? at least 100 or more still sealed.  And, let's not count gins (some), rums (some), or aperitifs (lots-we do one cocktail almost every night before dinner), vintage ports (purchased when I was MUCH younger and are now ready to drink with the youngest being a 1984), or wines.

ASIDE - Joe, you were right.  This is a good exercise.  Indeed, I feel so good I think I'll get in the car and . . .B)
