jfw
I've been bunkering for the last 8 or 9 years. Before that I just bought stuff always assuming Pappy, etc. would be on the shelf the next year. Hey, I waited for the sales before I bought Pappy because that stuff was expensive. Pappy 15 was $50 when it wasn't on sale. Who would pay that? I'm approaching retirement where I don't really intend to buy a great deal of additional bottles. I know I have a problem but unlike some, I will list the actual count ... 938 closed. It's not really an average just the current count +/- 1 bottle. It does not count the 30+ open. Periodically, I get the, "Don't you think you have enough?" or "No more open bottles in the dining room until we can walk around the table." BUT THEN - She saw a newspaper article (or maybe it was Chuck Cowdery's "Bourbon Country Reader"). Whatever, the love of my life said, "If Old Grand Dad 114 is being discontinued, don't you think you ought to buy a bunch?" Forty-two years of marriage, and she can still turn me on.

jfw
My bunker is in the show us your stash thread from a couple of years ago. I'm drinking my stuff or giving it to friends, so I don't really care if the boom passes. 99.9% of my bunker was purchased at retail. I'm amazed at how much prices have gone up in the last couple of year for what was regular stuff like Blanton's and Elmer. The only thing I have really bunkered in he last couple of years were FR store picks and FR LE when I can get them. I'm a sucker for a FR barrel proof. Some of them are WAY better than most of the FRLE (Small batch 2010, 2012 and 2013 and Single 100th anniversary excluded because they might be some of the best bourbon released in the last decade). garbanzobean
Hopefully it was clear that I was making a lame joke. If not, my bad. Four Roses Private Selections and LEs are a goodly proportion of my bourbon bunker as well, though yours is about 10x the size of mine.

Ghstudio
Clearly I'm a newbie...I have about 15 bottles of bourbon...four are open. I have to work through my 20 bottles of single malt scotches. No time to type...gotta drink!!Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Whiskey Dick
probably 70. this place has been both good and bad for my collection hobby. good in that I know when something is being d/c'ed and can load up on it, bad in that my bunker is constantly growing as a result

Lately I've been drinking the low proof bottom shelf stuff i don't care for that I bought early on in an effort to try everything. With the exception of a few LE things I liked, I don't prefer any standard bottlings under 99 proof (making an exception to 100 for the regular SAOS which I'll have to resort to when I'm out of barrel picks). KrispinD
Until recently I only ever kept a few bottles at a time on hand - daily drinker and something for special occasions. December was my first LE release season I payed attention to and I stumbled across a bottle of Lot B. That started the hunt and since then my collection has grown to 10 open bottles and another 20 or so in the basement. Trying to slow it down now, but not being terribly successful with things like SAOS being discontinued (one of my favorites).Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
musekatcher
I'm amazed at the collections and shear numbers. There is one collection a few pages back, that would total close to $20k worth of whiskey! I only started "bunkering" in the past couple years, after I saw AS drop, availability issues, and the 200+ folks standing in line for BT's release of a couple cases of LE's at the local LS (the eye opener for me) - at this rate, I've actually bunkered some pretty homely NAS KSBs as cheap insurance. BTW - my bunker is in the dozens, not hundreds...

KrispinD
I'm considering the strategy of limiting myself to filling one case per year. So my 2016 box would now be done, 2017 has 8 in meaning I only have 4 more slots before I have to start swapping them out / opening and drinking the ones that don't make the cut. Should result in slowing me down a bit and also having some legit boxes stashed away.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

(If you don't know Harry, these are not empties, they are full and stashed there for convenience). If you are successful, you'll be the first on this board to do so. Good luck! Someplace up above or on an other thread, I said my only New Years resolution was to drink down the bunker which isn't in the $20,000 range but is pretty hefty. Twelve days into the new year, and I've only increased the bunker by a net three bottles. My resolution is intact; I have another 11.5 months to get back in line. [Aside: I have come to the realization that, if I hated the bottom shelf, my life would be so much simpler.] EDIT - Krispin, does your strategy allow for finishing up previous years? Between the ages of ZERO and about 18.2, I bought no bourbon. And then there were those years when I had no permanent abode so had no bottles at home. Just wondering. [Aside: I have come to the realization that, if I hated the bottom shelf, my life would be so much simpler.] I hear ya' Harry. I've told myself the same thing. Buy less, and drink down the bunker. Both are a true work in progress. I'm trying to put a dent in my bunker by drinking down several bottles I have open. I did bite the bullet and bought a couple of bottles right at the end of last year. An ETL for me, and a MM Cubs World Series bottle for my supervisor at work. FWIW, my supervisor did buy it from me, but it's also a going away gift of sorts. He applied for a position at our corporate headquarters, and he got it. I'm really sorry to see him go. Best supervisor I've had in years. Back to things at hand. Right after the new year, I bought a bottle of Larceny. It's been a while since I've had one, and I hope to do an updated "wheaties" pic. I'm truly hoping this will be my last buy for quite a while. The only thing I have planned for the future is possibly picking up a few more bottles of the HH6 BIB when I go to Bardstown in April. With apologies to Robert Burns.... "The best laid plans of mice and men.........." Cheers! Joe

Well, of course those years count! If they didn't count one would never attain legal drinking age, right? Think about it.... I rest my case (and, if you must know; it's a case of OGD114). Harry in WashDC
Joe - I was sort of planning on making the April Event this year, but my 50th college reunion is in May, and I couldn't fit them both in. I so love the HH 6YR BIB that I've been scouring liquor store websites between Wash DC and New York State to find any that carry it - that and JTS Brown which is also unavailable here - for the drive up. I'm lobbying in-house for me at least to attend the Fall get-together in KY - not getting any younger, and I'd really like to put some faces to the SB handles - so all is not yet lost or, worse yet, forgotten (like where I put my glasses last night). Wheated bourbons in the Winter? Well, I guess, although my overproof MMs do get tapped from time to time when there is snow on the ground.
