What bourbon are you enjoying (Winter 2016/17)?

Had a bit more Bourbon Cream for dessert.  The wife is finishing it off.  Now I'm having some store pick/single barrel 1792 Full Proof.  I'm not loving it so far.  Really hot, slightly bitter finish.  My lips are actually tingling after this one.  Had a really hot alcohol nose to it at first, also.  A few minutes in the Norlan glass got rid of most of that but the nose that is left is pretty light.  Some air might help but don't know if I'd pick another of these up.  The store I got it from had cases of their pick stacked up the other day so was contemplating going back if I really liked it.

Maker's Mark Private Select from Bayway.  110 proof.  Pat, the whiskey manager ay Bayway, thinks the juice is 7-8 years old.  A big fan of Maker's Cask Strength and this kicks the depth and richness of flavor up a notch or two.  Vanilla and mocha really come through on the nose.  On the palate: definitely a wheater, but the staves add complexity where again the mocha and spice influence is noticeable.  Not especially long but pleasant finish.  At $70, I would not call it a bargain, but fair for the uniqueness of the expression.  Need one more at least for the bunker.  Thanks to the SBer that called my attention to this!  For those observant of the wine, my son turns 21 on April 1 and Dunn is my favorite wine and 1996 is his birth year.  Steaks, cigars  and maybe some Pappy to celebrate!  Happy Sunday to all.

We are big Dunn fans, too. Have even visited the winery; small operation, great wine.

Hop,

All I can say is if you are in E'town this weekend and don't pick up a bottle of this it will be a huge mistake on your part.  We had tasted the Barrel #4044 (13+) and were impressed.  We opened his bottle #3094 tonight (14+) and is was in a word spectacular.  Actually you can't really describe it in one word.  Huge flavor as soon as it came out of the bottle and only got better as it opened up.  It just fills your mouth with flavor starting with sweetness and then in the middle there is just a touch of spice and it finishes like a beautiful song that just fades at the end leaving you wanting more (a soft warm heat and no burn).  Basically an exceptional bottle.  I'm already considering going by again tomorrow and picking up another bottle.

I'm fairly new to bourbon but after the first sip I knew this one was special.

I went to both P&M and Mammoth and missed out in both...  It was already gone at both stores and I was bummed.  Now that I got home and read this I'm really bummed

Hop, I'm probably to blame for you missing out on Barrel #3094.  The Black Tot, a member here PM'ed me that he had missed out on the Barrel #4044 and didn't want to miss out on #3094 since he had read my glowing prose.  He was on a ship off the coast of Africa and asked me to pick him up some.  I ended up getting the last two bottles for him.  I did tell him if he didn't get by soon to pick them up that I couldn't guarantee that they would be full. LOL

Just before I went to bed last night I went to the cabinet and had a short pour of VOB BIB 6.

Image result for very old barton 100 proof

Picked it up since some members said it is scarce and the liked it.  Not bad.  Pretty oakey and dry to my palate.

Finished a bottle of OGD114, outstanding from the first pour through the last.

This is one bottle that still sits on the shelf around here (sometimes keeping the Masters Keep company which I find even harder to understand). So much potential and I really wanted to like this one but it didn't quite deliver for me. A bit oak driven but not excessively so but rather thin on mouth feel (I blame it on the 91 proof. Why 91????) It is thin even compared to the Masters Keep at 86.6 which is just so much better to me and I am still not seeing much of a price break on it even though it has been on the shelf now for 2+ years!

I haven't opened my MK yet, and I did like the Diamond but I thought it felt a bit thin on the mouth feel as well.  Other 90ish proofers (BT, W12, ER10, even MM, etc) don't feel as thin to me.

I agree about the thinness.  That's it's biggest weakness so far. Well that, and the high price.  But I guess for me the thin mouth feel is not that big of a deal.  The diamond and the Master's Keep 17 don't have the classic WT bold and spicy bite.

Speaking of thin, I'm sipping on a recently purchased 4RSB that is barely above thin throughout.  Nowhere near the fullness that I expect from this label.  Little in way of mouthfeel, and tannins are overrunning everything over the palate.  This is my first regular Single Barrel in a while, and I am hoping this is simple barrel variation.  But, with evidence showing depleted stocks at 4R, I am somewhat concerned as my opinion continues to be poor on this bottle as I reach its midway point.  I'll need to get another from a different warehouse location to compare.

Joe, it's a trend unfortunately. I've noticed this with some recent FR PS as well. Glad I have bunker full of older FR.

Bummer, then.  I'll keep up hope, regardless!

Keep coming back to John J Bowman Single Barrel lately. Really is rather good.

I have been waiting to open my bottle for a time when I have company over to enjoy the first tastes with me. I look forward to trying it.

I've had similar experiences. The last one I opened was peppery rye and not much else. It isn't what I've come to expect.

Just a kiss of maple smoke on a robust bourbon body. And I'm appreciating the long warmth of this finish on a cold and snowy evening. Skol my fellow Bourbon Lovers

Tonight in this KC I'm picking up notes of salted caramel and something almost like orange bitters. I think patience to let it breathe first is paying off tonight.

A little 4R OBSO sbs action tonight, thanks to a generous fellow SB'r.

His sample is way better.....fresh ripe berries swirled in caramel and vanilla.

Mine still tastes like dirt & disappointment.

hmmmm......

That's a great way to celebrate your physical. Congrats! And it helps decrease stress and clear out the cholesterol. You're a paragon of health!

Sorry to say that I've also had some subpar 4RSiB's in the past year. It's no longer an automatic like for me.
