Yeah, I am fine with folks shopping on that end of the aisle while I shop on my end.  I still recall someone buying a grocery cart of Fireball at Kroger on New Years Eve a few years back.  If nothing else, I bet they had a fun party.

That’s a lot of polypropylene glycol - an ingredient which Fireball shares with antifreeze and the reason it has been banned in the EC

Just Propylene Glycol.

In many foods and drinks like ice cream, whipped dairy products, soda, etc.

Not banned in EC.

Generally Recognized As Safe by US FDA, and other food safety organizations.

For someone so unorganized I seem to like the word organizations...Removed the repeat...

“Fireball Cinnamon Whisky is taking heat in Europe over a chemical ingredient that’s used in some forms of antifreeze.

Norway, Sweden and Finland have recalled the popular cinnamon-flavored liqueur — a trendy favorite of sweet-toothed college students — after a batch of the North American recipe, which contains higher levels of propylene glycol, was shipped there, its manufacturer said on Tuesday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says propylene glycol is “generally recognized as safe” for use in food, where it is used to enhance flavor by absorbing water. Sazerac, the New Orleans-based beverage company that owns Fireball, puts more propylene glycol in its drinks sold in America and Canada than in Europe.”

Also banned in England.

This dust up was 4 years ago, widely reported, and quickly dismissed.  It basically centered around that the allowed amount of PG in some food products in some European countries is less than in the US, and some product produced for the US market was inadvertently shipped to Europe.  It was recalled.  It is not banned.  It is widely accepted as an additive in food products throughout the world, including Europe.  People freak out with the term “anti-freeze”, as most of us know this term as something that goes into our cars.  These are two separate products.  An attempt to link them beyond their efficacy is being ignorant and disingenuous.

Man...really digging Eagle Rare. Glad that at least for the nonce it's readily available at my local grocer (who for years has had the shelf tag inexplicably labeled as "Eagle Scotch"...ummmm...no! LOL!) $30.99 for a 750...decent bang for the buck outta this. Sipping some while listening to some early Pat Metheny with Jaco Pastorius on bass... (Bright Size Life...killer album...)

This is absolutely correct. It’s in toothpaste, Tylenol, etc. Typically grades are segregated by Industrial (anti-freeze, aircraft deicing fluid, etc.) and USP/Kosher (food, medicine, etc.) though the differences are minimal. Companies like McCormick spice and International Flavors and Fragrances buy several trucks of PG a week in each plant. It’s widely accepted as as an ingredient in foods and medicines, and has been for decades.

Atta boy Todd. :) I don't have Bright Size Life, but I do have a couple of other Metheny albums. Good stuff. Bourbon and Jazz are a great combo.

Wow, thanks.  I remember clearly the reporting when the issue occurred because I threw out the Fireball my kids had for parties.  When I found the quote from the news report, the impression I got when I looked was that it is still banned in those countries.  Thanks for clarifying that and for the added perspective.

Thanks for the information.

I went to a specialist doctor earlier this year.  After some tests, he determined that I am very alergic to polypropylene glycol!  I got rid of all the products with it.  My health made a dramatic improvement.

In the past, I stayed away from Fireball - because I think stuff like that is garbage.

Now I have another reason.

I never would have thought that a whiskey product would have something like that as an additive.  Nor would I intentionally spread misinformation.  I did a bit more digging after Joe correctly pointed out more recent information than the articles I remembered from four years ago.  As a postscript, apparently Sazerac removed polypropylene glycol from the Fireball recipe.

I'm having some regular MM, so no worries.

Do you all think anyone will ever post in the dusty thread, they found a cache of the original recipe Fireball?  Ha-ha

Seriously though, allergic reaction to PG is no fun at all.  I have to read labels carefully.

Enjoying a little EC12 (after the AS move to the back).  A little bittersweet actually, since it reminds what's been lost over the past some years - quality age-stated bourbon easily found at reasonable prices.  Can anyone name a 12yr in the $30s that can be found easily today?

I can lay my hands on several within a few minutes..... In my bunker.   Nowhere else I can think of, though.
