Being in Montana, it seems the market trends take awhile to make it out here. Something that’s finally arrived over the past year, to my great satisfaction, is store picked single barrels. Over the last month or so I’ve picked up a BT, OF SiB, and Woodford Double Oaked store picks, and am a big fan. The BT is fantastic. Way better than the standard fare IMO, and pretty much the same price. And the OF is incredible. He’s limiting them to 1 per customer, so I’ll have to stock up the old fashioned way, otherwise I’d get a case. The woodford is pretty good too. Awesome nose... but, as expected, pretty much an oak bomb, which I’m not a particular fan of. Overall, I’m a happy camper though. I’ve stocked up on a few of this stores Blanton’s picks too, but have yet to crack them. I presume the distilleries select honey barrels to go into the barrel pick programs. Does that seem to be the consensus?

Really enjoying the OF 1910.  I have decided I like the OF 1910 much better than I originally thought I did.  Perhaps even more than the 1920.

My wife and I were up early, out all day, and got home a little late. I’m now kicking back and relaxing with a couple of nice pours of a ps ER. Just like Campbell’s soup. Mmmmm, Mmmmmm good!  :)

Ok, last pour from this Booker's batch B95-C-31.  This one was distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2002.  I bought it as a dusty in 2015 and it's funny to think that it may have sat on the shelves (or in a stockroom) for up to 13 years conceivably!  It's been a very enjoyable bottle (one of the better Booker's that drinks below its proof) and I'm just glad I have one more in the bunker.  Beam please bring back the real pine wood box and the rawhide leather loop!

Phil! Haven't seen you here in a while. Always good to hear from you.

Snow is pretty rare here but when it does happen it's pretty special to sit inside all snug with a bourbon while watching the snow fall. And appropriate to do so with a wheater.

Hey Steve ! I've been lurking a couple times a week, just haven't been posting. I started reading your thread, State of the State, got interrupted and didn't finish the read. Hopefully I'll check it out this afternoon.

On Friday night I conducted a whiskey tasting which was an item myself and two others donated to a charity auction. The objective was to move through "basic" offerings while moving up to premium offerings from two distilleries - Beam and Wild Turkey.

For Beam, we started with KC NAS, then Baker's, then KCSiB, and then Booker's.

For Turkey, we started WT 101, then RR10yr, then WTRB, and then RRSiB.

KC NAS was pretty rough I have to say. Others agreed. I'm really glad I stocked up on 9yr age stated. Baker's didn't show very well which was surprising. KCSiB was a hit, as was Booker's (Kathleen's Batch).

WT101 was received very well. People were surprised. RR10yr was also received very well. For a minute I thought it might end up the favorite of the night. Then they got to Rare Breed. It blew minds. RRSiB also made a big impression.

Overall, it was a great night. KC NAS was a revelation. I hadn't had it in a while so I'm sad to say it's clearly dropped. (On an unrelated note, EC NAS still presents well for those who are keeping score on dropped age statements).

Earlier this evening, I had a couple of pours of another one of my blends. No, it wasn’t my 2018 WellerBlend, but it was a Weller Blend. I had low fill, old label bottles of Weller SR,12, and Antique open, so I decided to blend them. No precise measurements or anything for this one. I just threw ‘em all together. ^_^ Yeah, it’s pretty darned good. :P

Rare Breed 112 or 116?

Saturday night, after watching my Cardinal's "whupp up" on the Tar Heels my wife, son  and I went out to dinner with some friends.  The ladies wanted to look at some comforters so the guys went across the street to Packages & More and I picked up a bottle of New Riff SiB BP (and a couple of bottles of chardonnay to keep my wife happy).  My son picked up a 14 y.o. KC SiB PS.  Then headed over to Liquor Barn.  My buddy picked up one of the James T. Kirk bourbons to go with the Hirsch 8 y.o he got at P & M.

Headed back to the house where we uncorked all of the above to taste and also had some Whistle Pig 10 y.o Rye and we shared a sample of my 2018 GTS

In preparation for the big snow today I made some venison stew in the crockpot. First time trying Bambi. The SAOS (from the NC ABC) and baguette I got from Wegman's are enjoyable. Bambi not so much.

Sad to hear this. We eat quite a bit of venison in our household. Was it your own harvest?

It was a gift from a coworker who is an avid hunter in WV.

What is “harvesting” deer?  Is it like pigs, cows, chickens?

Some high proof, 14 year, single barrel Beam.

Yes please. This seems way more balanced and less oaky than my last 10yr KC pick. It’s hitting the spot tonight.

I think I’ll have some tonight.

Yeah it’s really good kind of wished I picked up multiples. It’s just that I was slightly turned off after my last one, but now I’m back on board the KC pick train.

Was it back strap? Really too bad it didn’t work for you, I’m a huge fan. Slow cooked maybe with a red wine sauce Bourguignon stew, yes please.

Pretty much the same thing.    Any method of changing 'live meat' to 'meat in the pot' amounts to same thing.    In every case some animal dies, and is prepared for the meal, and is eaten.

The term 'harvesting' is a kind of euphemistic way of explaining that process to those with whom one doesn't necessarily share a similar understanding of hunting and killing.

The one and only thing I can say about venison is to not over cook it. The gaminess comes out with a vengeance if over cooked. (Not saying that’s what happened, many hunters mishandle the meat)

Richnimrod summed it up pretty well. In a forum with lots of people, talking about killing animals isn’t always going to be well received. Talking about the animal like it’s a vegetable usually is but yes it’s a bit amusing. Harvesting a deer is a bit of a disservice to the hunter because it makes one believe it’s as easy as picking corn.
