is it any good?

I just picked it up Sunday night, so it's still sealed. I'll post a report once opened. Hopefully it smokes the official Port Dundas 18yo 43% ABV bottling (which seems to have been discontinued, along with the 12yo). Odd that I came home with two grain whiskies in one weekend.

Did you not run across the Pittyvaich 26 Orphan Barrel (Forager’s Keep)? It's quite nice, but I'm a Pittyvaich fan.

For whatever reason we have not been getting Orphan Barrel bottles at the store lately. We are reaching out to the local distributor to try to figure out why.

I picked up a 1.75L of Famous Grouse - as I dabble on the dark side. ?

For an 80 proof blend, pretty decent.

Couple of well-packaged malts from the Glen of Tranquility… a rare two-fer for me.

Looks like we have a theme going here. This might help in my exploration of another rabbit hole.

20201010_193132.jpgI’m not a big scotch guy, but I have my fair share of selections on hand and have tried many.  Of those, Glenmorangie whiskies are my favorites that are readily available near everywhere.

I've not yet tried anything from Glenmorangie, but I have discovered a fondness for the non-peated stuff (so far). ? Looking forward to trying these, and $25 seemed reasonable. Thanks for the input! ?

Yes, this is a good value for 400mL-- I sense a new version is on the way with the Quinta Ruban 14 replacing the 12, so look for close-out pricing.

Speaking of close-outs, I assume this was dramatically marked down to make room for the new 200th Anniversary releases…

Looking forward to checking this one out-- I don't recall ever seeing an ABV this high on a JW blend. Hopefully the percentage of malt is high as well.

While picking up my order at the whiskey monger today, this one caught my eye across the aisle sitting amongst the other Glenmorangies.  Had to bring it home.  The reviews I read afterwards suggested it was going to be way too sweet, as in liqueur sweet.  Nowhere near that cloying.  The Tokaji Sweet dessert wine cask finish does give it a juiciness, though.  All in all, an enjoyable pour  and perhaps it’s the power of suggestion, but there is a cake-like element to it.  But, cake aromas coming from the oven while it bakes, and without the over abundance of frosting.  After a long week, and decompressing on the front patio on a sunny and breezy coolish afternoon, it’s quite nice.

I didn’t find particularly cloying either. But it didn’t seem particularly complex to me either. A bit of a one trick pony.

I was never a huge fan of Glenmorangie to begin with.  The special releases were interesting at first. I don't think that I've liked one since Ealanta and I stopped trying after Milsean.

Milsean was certainly one that could discourage you. And speaking of cloying that one certainly fit the bill!

More likely a cheap ass owner trying to squeeze the last drop of blood from that particular turnip by illegally selling samples.

This shop always has odd small-format stuff, which is why I go. Otherwise the prices and taxes in Washington make it hard to justify buying.

A couple from Dr. Bill. I quite liked the 2019 Traigh Bhan release, and initial reports are putting this one a step above.

Never got to try the Traigh Bhan. Too much to buy without try first for me given Ardbeg’s hit or miss releases of late. The cake is, umm, “ok” but not all that memorable.

I certainly have. When the local distributor makes it so hard to get I lose interest in chasing it. Very annoying.

Have you tried the Arcana? A lot of Talisker and it tastes like it. Much more of the typical marine seaweed peat of Talisker and not the sharper Islay peat. As usual I could also wish for more proof. Shocking, I know!
