Haha we’ve all been there.  Somehow changing out the toilet handle, and bathroom fan ended up requiring four trips to Home Depot.

So it's not just me!  Man, I am NOT at all handy around the house.  My Polish FIL thinks I'm a moron!

A few birthday pours tonight:

Old Forester 100

Four Roses Small Batch Select (found a mini today, giving me a chance to try before committing to a bottle...it's terrific)

Pikesville Rye (first time with this one, too)

and then...? Either OGD 114 or WTRB, both perennial favorites

Having a couple of pours from a newly purchased bottle of regular old MM. Nice. 😋

Opened up both a Penelope's Toasted as well as Basil Hayden Toast. Seemed fitting after the first snow fall of the season.

Kinda surprised that the Penelope's Toasted was drinkable from the start. For most Penelope's, I need it to open up for at least a week for it to be drinkable, to me.

Basil Hayden Toast was pretty forgettable on the palette, to me, but the finish was warming and quite delicious.

Samples night.  Both curtesy of @0895.

Started with a '19 Yellowstone LE.  9 year 101 proof source unknown.  It was airy and light and dangerously drinkable.  Probably would not buy due to high price, but in a vacuum the juice is great.  My guess would be Beam, but its just that.

Moved onto the OBSF.  Amazing at 8.6yrs.  Traditionally not a recipe I covet, but goes to show that we should be paying attention to WHO is picking the barrel over blindly preferring a recipe.

Now drinking some 1792 12 year.  Which is good, but clearly a step down.

I wonder how he got ahold of an F recipe. I’ve been trying for years to gather them all, but nobody seems to do barrel picks of F.

I've got an open bottle of the Penelope's Toasted that has become a rotation favorite.    I got mine from Wegman's which had four choices of barrel char for the toasted part.    I chose a light #1 char,  thinking that might understate the vanilla injection brought about by toasting.    Not sure that worked as intened - it's a bit of a vanilla bomb,  but it's balanced and damn sippable.

Listening to Jan Lundgren Trio.

I've been screwing around this evening with an "Alberta Scout."     Alberta Premium Cask Strength bursts with flavor and age,   but it's 66 percent alcohol and needs to be proofed down.  That can be done by adding a drop or more of water,  but I think I'd rather proof it down with whiskey.    So it's a 50 -50 blend of Alberta Premium and Smooth Ambler Old Scout.    I gotta say,  it tastes like a really good Wild Turkey!

Larceny barrel proof B521 while grilling some T bones. It’s very good. This is the only batch I’ve had. I’d say HH found the sweet spot with this one.

You said the magic word. “Blend” 👍 BTW, what album is that in the background? Looks like Harry Connick Jr.

I have another Penelope's Toasted but I failed to look at the back of it. It's in the back of the bunker so I won't be pulling her out for a while to check either haha.

Now if only I get find a Michter's Toasted and try all 3 of them SBS... and then maybe a EC Toasted? Yummy.

5 glencairn pours of Blantons while my family watched “In the heights” while I listened to some Bourbon Pursuit episodes using my Bose QC35 headphones (these things are great and wireless).

EW 1783 is hitting the spot.

Earlier, my wife's sister asked her what type of whiskey I drink.  No flavored stuff!  I said bottled in bond, unless my brother in law thinks there is some Scotch I should try.

Ah Christmas gifts - 750ml, the size that always fits.

Had a small pour of EW BIB during dinner prep. Now kicked back with some MM 101 for dessert. I have really become fond of this bottling over the last month or so. Chewier than the standard Maker's, for sure, and with a delightfully long finish. The notes that come through most clearly for me are cherry cola and salted caramel, but there are bits of raisin and a nice little vanilla-leather duo in that finish. Unexpected. Glad I didn't pass this by.

I see these all the time and leave them on the shelves. I always think about it.

What do you mean by chewier?

Pretty tasty although I’d love to know the source.  Cheers y’all.

Pretty sure this is one of those that were “confirmed” to be from the 78.5/13/8.5 Jim Beam totes.

I’m drinking the Kirkland 1792 BIB. Way less oak than the standard 1792 BIB but pretty tasty for $25 per liter.

That's the Jan Lundgren Trio,  with Jesper Luungaard on bass and Alex Riel on drums.    "When Love Comes Around" on the Japanese Marshmallow label.

For me it means there's more mouthfeel and a fuller flavor. Standard Maker's is a nice, sweet bourbon, but this has a thicker, almost creamy mouthfeel and more dimension to the flavor. I can swirl it in my mouth, chew it a bit, and get more distinct flavors mixing and mingling.
