Bourbon porn  🤪

But seriously, those brands originally from National Distillers (Old Taylor, OGD, Old Crow) - changed owners.  Each version is different depending who made it.

Spectacular! I have never seen a WL12 box.  That's a nice touch.

Somewhere I remember hearing that EU market W12 comes in a box.  @StarSurfer55 Is that a 700ml bottle?

I’m having a W12 pour on a very cold December afternoon.  What can I say, I’m a victim of the recent posts.

Cheers!

I got excited a while back when I read 4R is releasing a shelf 100p SIB of OESK. Of course it's absolutely fantastic. And the label-bottle combination is beautiful.

I passed up that recipe based on the description of the flavor profile, how is the spice level on it? I've only tried OESK at barrel proof and wasn't a fan of the amount of spice I got on it, but that was several years ago and maybe my palate would think differently now.

My favorite of the picture is the OC13y PR, next is the 75th anv OF (I loved this set and thought it was cool that it was 375 and I still have a glass somewhere). And a very close 3rd and 3rd is the OFitz BiB and OF Bonded.

That is actually their lower rye mashbill.  I wonder if the spice was really heat from the alcohol content.  I have had several OESK BP over the years and occasionally they drink hot.  But, when they are on, they can be stellar.  I would think 100 proof should prove to be the sweet spot for this profile.

A. Smith Bowman that I bought today. The store owner said "you know it drinks hot?" It is 135 proof, he was correct. I am not good with tasting notes but it is really good. I don't regret taking a chance on this at all.

The last VSOF12 I saw was at the old Liquor Barn on St. Matthews Road in Louisville in 2013 or 2014 before they were forced to close down due to a lawsuit with the other Liquor Barn.  I seem to recall it was around $60.  Being a Cheap Bastard, I passed and bought something else.  Actually, that seems to be around the same time when Old Fitz BIB disappeared.  Even though it was the standard BT #1 mashbill, I absolutely loved Old Charter.

Sounds awesome.  Does it have an age statement?

Spectacular.  It sounds like a stellar profile from Bowman.  135 is crazy high proof but provides a lot of flexiblility in how to drink...neat, on the rocks, drop or two of water. Enjoy!

I picked up my first bottle of KC BouRye. The regular price (mid-$40s) is fair enough but not low enough for a Cheap Bastard like me who can pick up KC9 for $20.  However, I have always enjoyed KC Rye because of the rough edges around each pour.  I harken back to the days when I had a source in NW Indiana where both were available for $20.   Anyway, I grabbed a bottle today for $34.  The first pour was really rough around the edges and, while I poured it neat, I was contemplating the need to add ice or water.  However, I was too lazy to get up.  By the second pour, I didn't need any modifications.  It is a really good whiskey.  Well, worth $45.  I suppose I could attempt to replicate the blend for $56 ( a bottle of KC9 and a bottle of KC7 rye) or, maybe an even more preferrable blend, but why spend time on such effort when this time could be better spent drinking.  Plus, I believe the higher proof adds to the experience. Great deal @ $34, good deal @ $45.

Going from memory here, so bear with me. Before I get into things, I have to say that a VSOF 12 was my very first dusty/good find. (2008) 😎 The VSOF 12’s in my pic were from the old Bourbon Heritage Collection. After that, HH did a bottling that wasn’t that great. It disappeared for a short while, then was re-released. It was a surprise when we were in Bardstown for one of our get togethers and someone showed us a bottle he’d just bought.(2009-2010) It was opened and shared. It was much better than the previous release. I decided to buy one. It wasn’t around very long, and disappeared again, this time into oblivion. As for the Old Fitz BIB, it was around a bit longer IIRC. I remember still seeing it in the mid 20-teens. There was a couple of liquor stores I used to stop at in Elgin Illinois whenever we went to Chicago. At one store, the owner kept trying to organize his basement storage area. In doing so, he kept finding things. The Old Fitz BIB and older bottlings of WTKS were a couple of things that he kept finding in the basement. 🤣

One of my favorite local bars uses a combination of KC9 bourbon and KC rye in their old fashioneds, and they are excellent.  This bottle is turnkey ready for a great OF!

I still have one of those VSOF 12 unopened in my bunker.  It came from Fern Valley Rd. LB in Louisville sometime around 15 years ago.  I drank another shortly after purchasing.  It was ok, but had some of those eucalyptus cough drop and bitter wood flavors hanging around in the finish.  (Similar to why I never warmed up to Larceny.)  And that VSOF was not cheap either, even back then like high $30s nearly $40.  It was something not seen often.  Meanwhile (at least back then) there was plenty of W12 at $10 less, and such a pleasant easy drinker.

"Wheater Weekend" night for me (to steal a @mbroo5880i line)

I started off tonight by cracking open a Rebel Yell 10 SiB and it was fantastic as usual.

Then I experimented by blending the RY10 with a Rebel "Distiller's Collection" 113 proof store pick that I've had since 2022.  I'm not a huge fan of this store pick bottle on its own, so I'm experimenting with blending it with other wheaters to find a better balance.  I'm having good success blending the RY10 with this.  In the past I've also improved the Distiller's Collection by blending with WSR.  Next I have to decide whether WSR or RY10 works better (and which ratio works best) and when I do I plan to fill up an empty 375ml bottle with my home blend.

But tonight, I'm closing out the night with another wheated option ... Old Elk Double Wheat in my glass now.   OE Double Wheat is a blend of their wheated bourbon and their straight wheat whiskey.  I've really enjoyed this bottle quite a bit.  But at ~$95 I don't plan on replacing it when it's gone.

All this while listening to Don Williams' Anthology album on my old school hi-fi stereo rig.  Hard to beat Don Williams music on a cool fall night while sipping some good whiskey. 😀 🥃🎶

You brought back more fond memories when you mentioned eucalyptus in the Old Fitz 12. I never really got the eucalyptus/citrus flavor members here mentioned in HH products. That is, until I purchased a bottle of HM 10 BIB. Again, this was many years ago. I went to a baseball card show in Madison Wisconsin. I stopped at a liquor store just  south of Madison on the way home. They had the old style bottle that had a neck ribbon with the small folded info card. Got home, opened it, nosed it, and tasted it. Hmmmm. Now I get it. 💡It was then that I understood what members here were talking about. That bottle had the citrus flavor in definite and no uncertain terms. 😎 FWIW, any time I visited Madison after that, I always tried to stopped at that store on the way home. Got a few nice bottles there over the years. The best was a ps ER 10 they did. Sure wish I’d have bought more than one. You know what they say about hindsight?  🤔
