tango-papa
Happened to end up passing thru a very old (and somewhat  scary) part of South Houston today for work and couldn't resist stopping at two dusty old stores that caught my eye...First stop - scored a pristine condition Wild Turkey Tribute in the wooden box for only $79.99 plus tax! :woohoo: Second stop - picked up three 750ml Old Fitzgerald's. One with silver label and fake tax strip, one with silver label and TE cap and one with gold label and TE cap.Anyone know the provenance of these Old Fitzgeralds?~tp
cowdery
That's an excellent day's work. That's exactly the kind of place where you'll find a bottle of something like Tribute on the shelf, though why that store had it in the first place is probably a mysteryThe Fitz would be early 1980s and, therefore, unquestionably Stitzel-Weller. ggilbertva
I'm going through withdrawl! Haven't been in a liquor store in over a month! The bunker is full....no need to shop! :grin:Man do I feel your pain. While my bunker is small, I have enought to last years and not buy any more. Besides the 2 PVW15 and 20 that I purchased last month, that will be about it until the '07 BTAC comes out (dunno if I can wait that long....) TNbourbon
Buffalo Trace Experimentals obtained today. One bottle each. The extra 4 years in new oak before finishing gives the older one a more potent nose and palate entry, and overall richer flavor, but otherwise there's not a lot to tell them apart. After work tonight, I'll attempt a more ambitious tasting report. TBoner
Wow. Went back w/Grain Brain to two stores we've been to together once and that he has mined independently once. Found still more:4 more Weller SR Texas Sesquicentennial Decanters in their boxes (1986 was the year of that anniversary)2 OGD 114 ND w/ the old labelAn OC10 yr crystal decanter w/tax strip - late 70s or so...An Evan Williams jug-style decanter - 90 proof whiskey inside. Note: this is from 1980, not the similarly-styled version released a couple of years backMore ND Hill and Hill w/tax stripsOld Taylor 86-proof NDSeagram's Benchmark w/tax stripsWe split the take, and I think my Texas-born and raised father-in-law may enjoy one of those Sesquicentennial decanters... T47
I picked up a bottle of ER 17 today. It's another one of those we don't see here in WA too often. $51 gone in a flash...

When I asked the clerk if they had any more, she said they had three, but one person had purchased two of them about a month ago.Based on my reading here, I felt confident the Fitz's were S-W. Thanks for the info! :thankyousign: Would it be a safe bet that all Old Fitz's with silver and/or gold labels with TE caps are S-W? I found a small, very, very dusty stash of 1.75, silver labeled, TE capped Old Fitzgerald's a few weeks ago that I'll go back for if it's most likely S-W. The UPC began with 88076 as well. Please advise - and if they're S-W, I'll pick up all five of them and send you one... ~tp
cowdery
Well, the current bottles have TE caps. You mean the TE foil neck label and, yes, the TE foil neck label on Prime (gold) or BIB (green) pretty much has to be S-W.There are two good reasons to hunt SW whiskey. One, it's really good and, two, there's still a lot of it out there, in terms of traditional dusties. Figure that any Old Fitzgerald expression bottled before 1997 is almost certainly SW. People here routinely find bottles that are 30 years old and more. There are bottles of Prime and BIB out there that are barely ten years old. TNbourbon
...likely S-W. The UPC began with 88076...88076 belonged to United Distillers. I think it is safe to assume (and I do!) that any Old Fitzgerald or Weller bottle date-stamped '97' or earlier on the bottom and carrying UDV's UPC is Stitzel-Weller. scratchline
Was in New Jersey on business today and noticed a promising looking liquor store not far from the train station. On my dinner break I wandered in and found a 1.75 bottle of I W Harper Bonded. Distilled Spring '76, bottled Fall '82. You just never know what's going to turn up.-Mike

ggilbertva
Went to Ft. Myer commissary in Arlington VA today over lunch and picked up the following (all .750L):EWSB '96 - $19.95HMSB BIB - $23.00Beam Black Label - $14.95The McKenna BIB is a first time purchase for me so not sure the $23 is a good price or not. VA ABC has the EWSB for almost 20% more and the Beam Black for more that 30% more. Saving money makes me happy.....saving money buying bourbon makes me happy happy.

Those are exceptional prices, as compared to what I have seen in several states. I picked up EWSB 97 and OGD114. Hadn't had the OGD in some time. Sure do like that burnt corner of the brownie taste.:toast:JOE
cowdery
Agreed. I looked at those prices with envy, and Chicago prices are generally pretty good.
ggilbertva
Excellent...I think I'll celebrate by drinking some....bourbon! Well Chuck, I am also envious to the fact that you have such a fantastic selection there in Chicagoland. My only recourse to VA's limited selections is travel into MD (which is how I scored my latest WLW, GTS and Tribute purchases) or order from Binny's. ggilbertva
Made some additional purchases today. As I've whined about in numerous threads, VA lacks imagination when it comes to offering a good cross section of small batch/premium bottles; although, they are improving. I ordered online the PVW 15 year for $36.99 a bottle. I don't think I've ever seen the price that low. Maybe some of you can purchase in your local liquor store that cheap but VA doesn't even carry it and the store in MD I frequent would special order it for $50. Shoot, even Binny's price is $45. So, needless to say I ordered: 4 each PVW 15 ($36.99) 2 each ORVW 10/107 ($26.99) 1 RHF 2005 vintage ($38.99) I think it's been a good day of bargains....I need to stop now.... Virus_Of_Life
Thanks to a $25 gift card error from Bevmo (long story) I decided to try something new. The things they carry that I have not tried that I can't get cheaper somewhere else are few so I opted for the 2006 Birthday Bourbon. So I essentially got a $40 bourbon for about $14 out of pocket That helped ever so slightly the sting of a $403 traffic violation for running a red light and having a camera take my picture... I had cursed the bottle shape many times in the past, but have to say I am pretty imperssed with this, it has a marvelous nose.
full_proof
Conecuh Ridge. I bought it out of boredom more than anything else. The nose and taste is pure :shithappens: ! Don't waste money on this. tmas
I picked up a bottle of Baker's today. Always liked Baker's and I've never seen it as cheap as this, $29.99 on sale. I'm curious, how much do you folks pay for Baker's who live near to the Bourbon epicenter? Tom V
