What Are You Drinking Tonight, Winter'07/'08

Began the day doing beef ribs basted with some Four Roses Small Batch, to be ready by 6pm, as the evening set in I had a pour of Four Roses Single Barrel mmmm.., then moved on to Forester 2007 mmmm.. then Vintage 23 followed by Pappy 20. I may go 15 after this, to qoute Thomas Kinkade "The End To a Perfect Evening"

Finally got around to opening my Eagle Rare SB. More flavor and complexity than I expected being that I tend to enjoy higher proof versions. This one gives me a nice amount of spice in the nose and flavor, but mellows quickly before any real burn settles in. A nice smooth finish that leaves just a hint of spice and oak on my tongue. Here in WA its $29.60...how much does ERSB vary year to year?

A bit of a change-up tonight.

I'm drinking some Ardbeg ten-year, and really enjoying the experience. I don't often add water to bourbons, but find that just a bit really improves the three scotches I have on hand (Ardbeg, Talisker 18, and Aberlour A'Bunadh). I can make out more flavors, particularly in the Ardbeg and Aberlour, after the addition of a few drops of water. I'm going to start experimenting with bourbons tomorrow.

After a makeshift (as in, I had what I had on hand) cocktail, I discovered some 122.6-proof Parker's tucked away in a 'to save for later, and sharing' box, and poured 2-3 oz.

Again, I am convinced this was the best 'new' American whiskey of 2007.

OK, it's early in the evening and this is technically kind of off topic, but if anyone likes sparkling wine/champagne, you'll appreciate this. After getting some good medical news (don't want to violate HIPAA), we had to celebrate. Just finished a bottle of Bellavista Franciacorta Cuvee Brut; this is an Italian sparkling wine that is made in much the same way as champagne. NOT prosecco. It actually won a competion against 15 champagnes and 2 other Italian sparklers. Don't worry, I'm still planning on a little Pappy 23 later as per my earlier post. Then, it's off to bed.

Old HH BIB.

After I purchased this bourbon today, I checked some reviews and they were quite favaorable. I just now tasted this BIB for the first time and I fail to find the typical HH aromas coming from this bourbon.

If this bourbon was set before me, I would not associate it with HH at all. In fact, I'd liken more to OGD, believe it or not. And I realize nobody has made this comparison on any of the reviews I've read about it, but it's got that OGD smell and taste, to some degree. I'd have to do a side-by-side to see how strong a link there is between the two but that's probably not going to happen tonight.

I just took a sip of EC12. There is no comparison between the two. Totally different taste profiles, in my opinion. The EC is very HH while the BIB is more OGD.

I think this is a good taste note, and kudos for catching and elucidating it. I agree that I would place both the OGD profile -- especially the National Distillers versions -- and Heaven Hill more to the 'fruit' side of the rye spectrum, as averse to the 'spicy' side.

Do you get a 'bubble gum' or 'juicy fruit' sense from the nose? If so, that would, indeed, have tipped me to Heaven Hill, though Beam (OGD) also displays it -- I blame Earl, whom I believe stole it when he moved from Beam to HH c. 1946. God bless 'im!:toast:

Eagle Rare Single Barrel. I am enjoying the heck out of this bottle. I find the nose spicy, it is full of flavor yet wonderfully smooth. Nice clean finish. I will have to revisit this next to Lot B, but it is stirring the same memories for me? Am I way off on that? Just another liquid treasure...I am so easy.
