An Old-Fashioned. I used a mix of bourbons and straight ryes, Angostura and Fee's Orange Bitters and a small cube of brown sugar.

The Old-Fashioned is without a doubt one of the world's best cocktails. While it can be based on any American whiskey, bourbon or rye suits it best. If you get the balance right, it is just great. They can have their apple-tinis and what-not.

Just a further thought, that bourbon and rye developed hand-in-hand with cocktails. In the earliest days, they called the mixes punches or something else. Those who (as most of us) cannot spend unlimited amounts on alcohol should consider the merits of the great whiskey cocktails. This is especially because cocktails, in an odd kind of inversion, often taste better when made with whiskey which is not "the best". One of the best whiskey drinks I had in recent years was Stu and Bernadette's mint-infused Heaven Hill white label, I don't think anything else was even added.

Gary

P.S. No offense to those who like apple-tinis. A good one is no doubt a very palatable drink. My point is more that an infatuation with new cocktails often makes people forget about the classics that deserve to endure.

WTKS from a 2004 smooth brown top.

Not the same depth that my pewter tops have shown, but still good bourbon.

I posted our gathering today in the Bourbon Social thread but today was about 4 hrs of everything SW and cousins. From VVOF from the 60's to the NAS OWA from Julio's (which is really terrific BTW) and everything in between. I have to say, the VVOF was stellar.

I've been making love to some WTKS the last few nights and then cheating on it with neat hits of Old Charter 8yo, a nice light whiskey for the dough.

all good stuff.

It's taken me a bottle and a half, but I've finally settled on a good chocolate flavor, and some interesting Dill Pickle aroma's, from the OFBB 2009. I was very disappointed with the first bottle. This one as well at a friends house the other night, which is where I first encountered Mr. Chocolatey Flavor. I'm glad I took the bottle home with me, because this is getting better and better.

My tongue has really matured with all of 2009's fall releases. I owe it to that "Good Buddy of mine" as well as this board. I wasn't a regular member until sometime back in November when I started "The Bunker".

Thanks guys & gals!

I poured some 4R1B over cracked ice.

Oh, btw, I'm also drinking it.

I've got one in the bunker that is the brother of another that I did not like. I hate to be the one that says "eww gross....smell it?" but I think it's just me. Any traders out there? I'm interested in everything, except an EXACT exchange.

Had some OGD BIB while out for dinner tonight. I remember Chuck talking about it last year, but I'd never got around to tasting it. Dammit, now I'm going to have to buy some. Good stuff.

Drank some AAA 10yr last night. I seem to remember it being better the last time I had it. I guess I must be leaning more toward OF Signature lately for a value bourbon.

OGD 114 after Alice in wonderland and before dinner and Weller 7/90 just now. 114 really tasted splendid tonight!

I still have some of that Willetts 17yo, 97.2 proof, barrel strength from The Party Source.

I bottled some up in some 200ml's before going to "the get together".

And of course, I'm sipping it neat.

Hey John, how's yours?

I've only had a chance for a quick sip... marvelous and surprisingly nuanced. A longer analysis will like occur this weekend.

A big fat Bacon Burger with steak sauce for dinner now a big fat pour of Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit smooth dark top - 05. I have been on the fence about this juice until this bottle, probably because I have only tried the light top current stuff. Day-um this un's is a good pour.

I'm wrestling with a 13-YO Willett from the Party Source (barrel 3665). First impressions weren't good because a strange finish overpowered everything else. It's hard to describe, but I tasted sour wood, menthol, and overcooked vegetables. I've encountered similar flavors in the occasional off bottle of Elijah Craig 12.

I kept drinking it over the course of a week, neat, with water, and over ice. Nothing got rid of the odd finish and aftertaste (a bit of water actually made it more obvious). I then used it to make a Manhattan, which was terrific.

I guess I'll let the half-finished bottle sit for a while and see if anything happens to the flavors. If not, I'll use it to make tasty, but very pricy Manhattans. I'm curious about the other Party Source Willett bottlings, as members seem to like them a lot.

kicking off my Whiskey Friday (following Whiskey Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday...) with a vatting of 4R Barrel Strength editions.

I mixed:

1 oz 2009 Ltd Ed. (the remains of my bottle  )

3/4 oz Binny's OBSO

3/4 oz 40th Anniversary

1/3 oz Detroit tapwater (some of the best in the country)

It's excellent. Some of the individual characteristics of the whiskeys are

lost, but the end product is smooth and complex. Great sippin' whiskey.
