Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 1985. Strange I'd open one of my most prized bottles for such a sad event, but it just seemed like time. Autopsy showed absolutely nothing out of the norm and there were no drugs nor paraphernalia found, so what caused the death will remain a mystery for a while.

Here's to Paul Gray, one of the best whiskeys to ever cross my lips.

A certain moderator brought me some Rittenhouse 23 yr old to try and I may be ruined forever for liking any other spirit more than this. OH MY GOODNESS is it phenomenal. Thanks Joe

A bit of W.L. Weller BTAC with water 50/50, rendering a very drinkable smooth bourbon from an intense very concentrated liquor. Also, some A.H. Hirsch 16 gold wax which impressed with its round sweet chestnut fullness, the oak less evident than on earlier tastings (and it was first off in the evening). I think it may soften down in the open bottle.

Had a little front porch - rockin' chair - drinkin' time with the wife and some neighbors late afternoon yesterday. Made some Old Fashions with EW 1783. Was a nice to have drinks and take in the spring weather.

According to Radio Iowa (he died in Iowa the band is from Iowa) Toxicology reports wont be in for six weeks. But it's cool you opened your favorite bottle in his honor.

Dickel 12. Earlier I had a JDSB and Coke. It has been so hot lately I think I should have stuck with Jack and Coke.

Work got rained out this morning and I spent the rest of the day cutting dead fruit trees up for grilling/smoking. I'm still hot...........

Finishing off a bottle of 09GTS with my girlfriend. She asked for some bourbon to help her sleep. This should do it.

I did have forester BIB from 1984 before going by bus out for dinner microbrews and stand up comedy yesterday to our neighbour city.. Back home I had ORVW 10/107 from the squat bottle with hazelnut cake. Real nice evening!

I'm not sure what I'm drinking. That may be a sign to stop.

Nope just a sign to go to the cheap stuff :slappin:

Opened two fresh bottles. WLW Special Reserve, and Lot B.

Weller first. I haven't had a bottle of this in a few years because the only place I can find it is in DC, which I haven't been to in a few years.

Nose: Very very fruity. Not so much citrus, but apples, peaches, cherries, the list goes on.

Taste: The taste is sweet and smooth. Not a whole lot of fruit, the sweetness is more honey and maple. The oak is there, but not too strong, tastes about 7yrs old, which it is.

Finish: Oddly enough, coffee fading to maple and apple. After a minute or 2, just a faint sweet goodness lingers.

This is a tasty bourbon, I would buy it by the 1.75+ if I could on a regular basis. I don't remember prior bottles being this good, but a few years ago I was just a young lad doing shots with my brother. We would regularly finish bottles in one sitting.

On to the Lot B. I've got a lot of these, but I haven't had one open in a month or 2.

Nose: Wow. What ISN'T there, is the question. Fresh cake from the oven. Maple. Brown Sugar. Oranges. Nutmeg. The list continues with a whole Whitmans Sampler.

Taste: A little spicy at first with cinnamon and red hots (not what I was expecting). Turning sweet soon after with a hint of vanilla, caramel, and quite a bit of wood. Again, there's not much that isn't there. Leather. Nuts. Clove.

Finish: A sweet candy flavor lingers in the mouth for quite a while. Again, a Whitmans Sampler. All of it.

I have nothing bad to say about this. Everything great. I can't think of a better bourbon, just a different one. I don't know how the Van Winkles add the "spice" to their wheated bourbon, but it seems to be in the 10, 12 and 15 year labels. I haven't found it in the 20, but I haven't spent a whole lot of time with the 20 either. In due time.

Well, that killed some time waiting for the girl to come home. I hope you enjoy the post. Please comment.

Excellent reviews SMOWK, my mouth is watering. Love the Lot B myself. Thanks.

SMOWK, thus far, I'm totally digging all things Weller. I prefer the OWA over the Special REserve but the SR is pretty good in its own right. Totally agree with your review.

After completing the installation of a new candelabra (two hours yesterday evening and 1.5 this one) I am rewarding myself with some JRPS 17. :yum:
