I started last night with a WT 86.8 pour and a high rye wasn't doing it for me...decided that since we were all sitting out on the patio with the fire going I was going to stick to something that I didn't have to think on...went with multiple large pours of Maker's 46. The wheater really hit the spot last night...it's a very drinkable bourbon. :cool:

Weller 12 then VOBBIB. The Weller 12 was a lot tastier. The Barton tasted extra hot after the Weller. Maybe next time I'll start with the Barton first.

Having a sour made from the 86 proof Old Crow Reserve. Not bad in the sour but have not tasted it straight yet

I finished off a bottle of Scotch tonight. It was very tasty. I opened another one. It was bad. So I dumped the glass out and finished off a bottle of ewsb, distilled 1994. Now the balance of the universe has been restored.

Had a very nice line-up yesterday and it was made special by meeting a new future bourbon afficianado.

Josh and Liz came over and we got to meet the beautiful bright eyed Virginia.

So Josh and I toasted and toasted and got toasty with;

She didn't have a pour, as such, she just had what her mother had.:grin:

We were having some very underwhelming EWON10 (made that up), but luckily Wal Mart Liquor was open so we picked up a WT101 that is doing a much better job.

Since Reid brought up Dougs bottlings, I pulled out my 17yr 148pf Willett. It is just as good as I remembered.....

just for comparisons sake, I put it against:

Willett 16 yr 147 pf Party Source

2009 GTS

It held up nicely.....

whereas, I love the "nutty" character of the Party Source bottle, and the overall completeness of the Stagg, there is something about Doug's 148 proofer that reels me in !!!!

Now the question is... where do I go now????:skep:

I bought my first bottle of WT straight rye last week and finally got around to it tonight. Not bad but I prefered the Baby Saz and Ritt BIB that came afterwards.

Not being one to make rash decisions, I think I'll need to compare these 3 again soon and see if the results are the same. :grin:

High West rye 21 years old, a rye mash (thus distilled under 160 proof) but aged in re-used barrels. This was a real eye opener, I was surprised at the quality conferred by the re-used barrels, i.e., it had elements of a straight whiskey even though it wasn't one. The long aging must be the main factor here. The whiskey was perfumed, somewhat like Whistle Pig, and this must be the high rye content at work. Very soft and tasty, with not quite the finish associated with charred barrel aging - I found a hint of "fresh wood" instead of smokiness - but refined and very drinkable. It reminded me of a well-aged malt in some ways. This whiskey was another in the group intended originally as the rye flavor element for Canadian whisky, but was released on its own. All the whiskeys I've had which were intended for the purpose mentioned have been different, but all good.

Cracked open a bottle of Willetts Reid & Emerald 17-2.

Amazing juice. Rich and densely-flavored; hint of char but not too much oak.

Couldn't agree with you more John...I cracked one open on Friday and had a small pour with a buddy of mine...we both were wowed over the ease in which it was drank at barrel proof...I can't wait to see how it changes in a couple weeks time. The good thing for me is I grabbed a couple for the bunker! :)

I don't remember if 17-2 is the 144 pf (I'm too lazy to go and check) but taken down to 107 it opens up in an amazing way. I hate to drink those at barrel strength and want to stretch out that juice so diluted, it's very enjoyable and lasts longer.

Tonight I'm enjoying some Baby Saz. I'm trying to kill off this bottle.

Just a couple pours from this little silver tax stamped WT flask! The proof is 86.8 and just a fantastic drink!

I had Blanton’s silver and OFBB 2004 before dinner last night and they both tasted good with the upper hand for the BB. Still the WRMCSO after dinner were the winner that night.

Our Whiskey group did a tasting last night comparing OGD 114, WT 101, and Blanton's. In a unanimous (10 tasters) decision the Blanton's was the overwhelming winner in the three pour comparison. This was my first time comparing these directly and frankly I had hoped for more from both the WT and the OGD. Both came across as relatively one dimensional and while good for mixing I don't consider either a rewarding sipper.

I had found a dusty OGD 114 on Monday (date on the bottle is '90) and we opened it and compared it to the previous three - Yowza! That is some good juice! Big rich fruity complex and entertaining with a gorgeous nose it was the evening's most impressive pour.

Steve - I had a bottle of OGD114 from 1980 that quickly became a top favorite of mine. It was lively and full of flavor...an exceptional bourbon.

The OGD always seems to be a good pour... even the most current offerings.... yet seems to be an under the radar bourbon...

Exceptional is a good description. Exceptionally lively and full of flavor with a surprising lack of heat from the proof - in fact it drank like a 86 or 90 proofer.

Rittenhouse BIB before dinner and Fernet Branca after. The BIB tasted excellent, but I have seen signs that indicate that it’s soon too be sold out here as well until the new edision will come.
