Is there any rhyme or reason to the distribution of this one (Tornado)? Can't find one anywhere close to the west coast.

I don't think E. H. Taylor is distributed everywhere, but if you got the previous ones (single barrel, sour mash) you'll probably get the tornado too.

Here's my tasting notes comparing the single barrel with the warehouse c tornado

I have to admit I wasn't wowed by the regular EH Taylor. I've had it a few times already - It's fine, but not worthy of its price point. A bit astringent perhaps. The nose had Hints of orange with a spicy but short finish, almost like red hots. You can taste the "alcohol" from start to finish. It's good but not great.

Now, the Tornado Bourbon is a whole 'nuther story! Nose has hints of apricot. Oaky with great mouth feel - smooth and velvety - no burn or spice at all and a lingering taste of chocolate. Really good stuff! I'd put it on par with the Parker's Heritage 2011 10 year cognac finish.

I just picked up a case for the bunker!

Tried a half-pour of the Taylor Single Barrel tonight at the bar. *Very* glad I didn't buy a full bottle. It tasted like a solid, 100 proof batch of regular Buffalo Trace. While nice enough with a heavy rye kick, certainly not worth $60, and miles from remarkable.

Makes me skeptical of the Tornado Survivor, esp. if it's the same mash and distillate with a slightly different barrel pick. Sigh...

Here's the press release for those that are interested.

According to this link it's about 8,500 bottles. 93 (53gallon) barrels at 64% angels share. Of course I don't know the exit proof so it may be a lot more bottles when brought down to 100 proof. I would assume the exit proof would be high due to all that evaporation. True? Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to find

Don't wait long to buy this - that's all I can say - once its gone it's gone. Truly a one of a kind.

Is it truly great, or just truly rare? I thought the Taylor Single Barrel was quite pedestrian and certainly overpriced.

With BT's limited edition bourbon slate, I'll pony up $70+ for Stagg (18 years+, cask strength unfiltered) or WLW (12 years, cask strength unfiltered.)

But that same price for a filtered 9 or 11 year BIB, when the previous batch didn't sway me? I have a Tornado on hold at the store but keep waiting for a wildly glowing review to convince me to just buy the damned thing already.

And yes, yes, I know Chris at Drinkhacker liked the Tornado, but he gave an A- to the Single Barrel, which I thought was overly generous. And to my knowledge, he has never, ever rated any whiskey at less than a B+. I joke, but in all seriousness, he gives out B's and A's so easily it makes Ivy League grade inflation look tame. His tasting notes are helpful and he clearly works hard on the site, but getting an "A" from him is like winning a "certificate of participation" at a middle school spelling bee. Hoping more folks here who have tasted it can post some quick notes.

Got a bottle yesterday.

First impressions: The tornado is very robust and flavor-forward. "In your face" in a good way. Nothing bashful or subtle here, all the notes are bright and clear. Nice, crisp taste with noticeable rye spice. The strength and clarity of flavor remind me of some of the GTS releases. Don't know if this makes sense but it seems like the BT profile has been amped up and the dial turned all the way to treble.

IMO, the best of the EHT releases. YMMV

Reg. Taylor would be a grade of C-

The tornado is an A+

I have not yet had the sour mash or SB, but I would say agree the Tornado is top notch. My taste buds are not refined but here are some of my thoughts:

Nose: Head cold limits this some tonight - Sweet (maple syrup brown sugar maybe) when head clears may have a better write up. Some alcohol but not over bearing at all.

Taste: A little spice up (nice spice) that fades quick. Some of that sweet nose comes through here as well. Feels stronger than it is at first. Finish has some nice oak.

Overall, really enjoyed this tonight even with a bit of a head cold. I am really looking forward to it when I am feeling better.

It's in Chicago currently.
A poor review of a whiskey, regardless of it's source, will never dissuade me from buying it. But, a good review, particularly from someone who's opinion I value, will definitely prod me to give it a try. Fortunately, in the case of this new Taylor, I took the latter path. Thanks JB, for directing me to a fabulous bourbon. It is exactly as you describe, which happens to be in my flavor wheelhouse. Indeed, the best of the new Taylor's.

Well I know what's on my agenda tomorrow. Thank the Lord I have a wife who's not compulsive about shoes or purses and the like...so I can buy even more bourbon  .

I'm seeing it everywhere now.

The stores I have visited in E. Cobb and North Fulton don't have it, but it is on its way this week!

  • 2 weeks later...

I was just notified of a bottle that is awaiting my purchase. The retailer just got it, so it is most likely this "tornado" version.

I am impressed with the reviews. I think I am on-board for the purchase.

I love a bourbon that has a story to tell. Moreover, as a self-proclaimed top shelf chick, the allure of the price tag peaked my interest. So last night, I decided to have a taste of the infamous Colonel E.H.Taylor Warehouse C Tornado Survivor. After the first swallow, I dubbed it “The Cowboy". Imagine if you will, a buckaroo swaggering into the bar wearing weathered boots and a bandana. A dribble from a tobacco “chaw” lazily flows down his chin. He surveys the room, draws his six-shooter but alas, is only firing blanks. Beware of the bullet holes that he will leave in your taste buds. The only thing this wrangler will lasso is your wallet. Not a fan.
