What Bourbon Are You Enjoying, Winter 2011/2012

I just returned from a work training trip. 12 of us spent 3 days in Chicago area.I took a flask of ORVW 10/107 along, but it didn't last long. The guys wantedto get a bottle of whiskey and I wasn't going to object. After much deliberation, we agreed on Maker's 46. I've got to say, I enjoyed it far more than I had expected. I've tasted it before, but never really drank it, if you know what I mean. More spice, more depth, frankly,more balls. I know this idea has been brought up here many times, but here goes again: how good could Maker's be? How about an 8-10 year old 100 proof Maker's?

My wife and I have found a new affordable favorite. Some here on the forum recommended it, so we gave it a shot. A 50/50 blend of Old Weller Antique and Weller 12 year. It's really good, and at less than $19 a bottle, it's hard to beat.

The Antique packs the intensity and vibrance and more visceral flavor and nose, while the 12 year provides that subtler complexity and depth and age to the flavor. This really works nicely. And do let them mingle and meld in the bottle for a week or so.

Oh, and I'm officially now a huge fan of the recent shipments of Rittenhouse Rye BIB. That stuff is stellar. I could live on that if I had to.

After a hard day at work I needed some good ND juice.

Started with a 1990 OGD BIB, stated 8 years old. Wonderfully rich and buttery with that unmistakeable OGD flavor. The vanilla is almost overwhelming, but the alcohol heat keeps it from spoiling the party.

Now it's onto an OGD 86. Still amazingly flavorful for 86 proof. The extra age of the glut really shows. Caramel coats my tongue. It's a damn good thing that this is the most common dusty in the area.

McScrooge's Barrel Selection of Pappy 15. I've been savoring my last few bottles of these, but for a Monday, this day worked out pretty dang good. So, I'm treating myself. There's pappy, then there's Pappy, then there's PAPPY! This one belongs in the latter category.

Started out with some light whiskey, several pours of 4R Yeller.

Finished it up with a couple pours of 4RsmB LE 2011. It just keeps getting better the longer it sits, but it wont be sitting much longer. I got about one slug left.

Had an incredible tasting of the William Larue Weller at Longman & Eagle in Chicago a couple of week ago -- the barrel proof was barely discernible on the palate, though physically I started hiccuping midway through ;p. Just amazing richness on the tongue, and overwhelming hints of black cherry, balanced by a subtle oakiness and rounded vanilla notes. For the rest of the day, I had the most pleasant-tasting burps that I've ever experienced. Highly recommended for those who love wheaters -- I'm continuing to enjoy my bottle of Lot B, which supposedly is the same recipe as the WLW, and has some similar cherry/dried fruit notes, as well as another bottle of ORVW 10/107, which I just cracked open today and where I'm noticing the fruity notes for the first time, with the heat balanced and adding to the richness of flavor.

On another note, I opened a Corner Creek, which has been pretty decent for ginger beer highballs, and I'm going to try it in Manhattans when I get some more sweet vermouth. A Willett 4 yr (barrel 2613) was a little too much rye for me -- intense mint, herbal flavors and noticeable alcohol heat. I'll still finish it off, though... lol.

By the way, Longman & Eagle was great. It has a whiskey list that truly reflects a whiskey lover's passion, and some interesting cocktails & tasting flights, as well as great food. I'd highly recommend it for anyone in Chicago or passing through (it's right off the CTA blue line on the way to the airport).

Long pour of the SB vat! First run at this and I find this fantastic. Great carmel taste on the palette from the OWA and very nice slight oak finish from the 12.

Some single barrel OWA....reminds me of a younger Pappy...absolutely delicious.

What would be a younger Pappy? A Dad?

A little ORVW 10/107 tonight, and it is firing on all cylinders. While I certainly love a lot of different bourbons, this might be my favorite all-rounder.

Stopped in at Sgtgto's house while out in Seattle and we enjoyed a couple pours before heading out to a local sushi restaurant where we at an insane amount of food!

The ER17 was IMO the surprise of the night...so complex and one that I have overlooked in the past. Last night it was filled with rye spice, dried fruit, figs, cherries, and hint of oak...just a really nice pour!

I picked up a bottle of OGD BIB last night. It was really my first forray into high-rye bourbon (I have always gravitated towards wheated bourbons). It was very different, but I liked it a lot, actually. Since I don't have much of a point of reference, does anyone have any suggestions for some other good bourbons with a high rye content? Thanks!

I keep my old weller bottles so that each new bottle can be "split" into two bottles to air. A date sharpied onto the cap helps as well.

I had read this in another thread. And it will work for me after this bottle. I guess I need to pick up two more. 1 to split into two bottles, and the other to drink while I let the others sit.

I guess I could reach for another bottle more frequently, but it seems at the very least every other pour is coming from that OWA.

Brilliant. How long do you let them sit?

My goal is at least a month, preferably two, but it doesn't always work out. Sometimes I get a little thirsty and they just don't last.
