I'm having a pour of Siete Leguas Blanco tonight. I like it a lot, probably my favorite tequila (although admittedly I have a lot more to try!) Great earthy flavors and somewhat more smokey/peppery than others I've had.

The entire Siete Leguas line is fantastic, in my book. Be sure to check out their reposado when you get the chance. Enjoy!

One of my favorites and why I have a dozen bottles of it in bunker. Of course it helps that I bought most of them for $19.99; this particular store has now raised price to $24.99, but still way less than most.

That's unreal cheap. I'd be buying a dozen too at that price. All 3 are really good. The blanco is maybe the most minty/grassy blanco I've tasted in a while. It's really interesting and tasty. The agave pepper punch is strong in the whole line. It's a very traditional tequila.

At a friends house last night and he had a Don Julio 1942 that he let me try. Tall slender bottle. I tought it was a very good tequila...smooth with floral and vanilla notes with a nice nutty, wet finish. I have never seen this offering from Don Julio. Can anyone give some history on this tequila?

What else do you recommend along the same lines as Siete Leguas?

Crotalo

Calle 23

Azunia

Corralejo

El Reformador

KAH

Tequileno

Tres Agaves

All of those have a similar blanco/base taste. They're all a bit different in the aging, but all very good. Tequileno, Crotalo and El Reformador are probably my favorites of that group. Check my blog with tasting notes on a bunch of those and hopefully that can help steer you toward one.

Don Julio started the distillery in 1942. Around the 60th anniversary (2002), he released this tequila. It's a step above the regular anejo, but not aged 5 years like Don Julio Real. I actually prefer this one to the Don Julio Real. It retails for about $100 a bottle and is pretty darn good.

Here's my tasting notes: http://tequilatourist.blogspot.com/2012/01/review-2-don-julio-1942.html

Picked up a bottle of Del Maguey Vida this weekend. One of my favorite lower priced Mezcals. So rich and smokey, nice citrus and spice, good mouth feel (not watery at all) with all those rich agave flavors and spicy flavors with just a nice punch of smoke.

Word on the street has Ron Cooper coming to Dallas in the near future to do a sampling event - I will be there for sure! He's got an awesome palate for picking these single village mezcals!

I felt like this one was worth a mention.

Gran Dovejo. I've had both the blanco and repo recently. They're both fantastic. One of the better new lines I've had recently. The repo is review #180, so it's pretty easy to find from the front page. They're different, but both spectacular.

I absolutely love Del Maguey Vida. I also had a single pour of the Chichicapa and thought it was even better. I can't wait to try more of this line.

I've had all but the Pechuga and they are all excellent. Hoping to try the Pechuga when he comes to town. All booze should be made with some meat in the still!

I haven't gotten a ton into mezcals thus far. I guess I shy away from the really smoky drinks. I'm not much islay scotches either.

Bought an El Espolón Blanco today. Excited to try it. I notice that it came from the same distillery as Cabo Wabo blanco - any comparisons between the two?

It's a really good value. In looking through my blog, I couldn't believe I hadn't posted a review yet. I need to get on that. As it gets more and more distribution (after being bought out), I pretty routinely recommend it as a go-to budget sipper and mixer. It's fairly mild and very smooth. Overall I like it as much as Cabo. They're a bit different as Cabo has an interesting spice/nutty sort of finish. Espolon is probably more straight forward. For the money, I buy Espolon.

I have a bottle or two to empty before I open the Espolón, but when I do I will do a blind tasting with the Cabo Wabo. Based on your comments I'm expecting I'll like the Cabo a little more but as you said - for the price, I know I'll like Espolón a lot. I have had one pour in a great Mexican restaurant and enjoyed it, but that day was dominated by mezcals for me so I definitely need more tastes to decide what I think of it.

Couldn't resist, and opened the bottle. My wife and I tasted it, not blind, in a flight with Cabo Wabo Blanco. We both preferred the Cabo, for the same reason - the spicy, peppery finish. Spot on notes, Max. We also agreed that Espolón is one we'll probably be keeping in stock for the price. But Cabo Wabo Blanco's on sale this month for $32 - is that a good enough price to justify buying a backup or would you say I should just wait until I can pick up a Corrido and more Siete Leguas and maybe see a Cabo cheaper? At this point I feel somewhat ruined for other tequilas by the earthiness of Siete Leguas.

I'll also say that I will be recommending Espolón to someone I know who likes Patrón for the smoothness, he can afford to pay half the price for something just as drinkable but more flavorful, I'm sure.

Be careful with all that Cabo Wabo. You might not be able to drive 55 anymore! :woohoo:

Personally I think it's pretty 'meh' stuff. Drinkable but not great. If you like peppery, the older, taller bottles of Casa Noble are great, but they're getting harder to find.

The new bottles of Espolon have been my go-to margarita mixer lately.

I don't know how fast you go through it, but I would wait until I can get the really good stuff at prices as good or better than Cabo. If you run out, keep the Espolon in stock to tide you over until you get a chance to get better stock.

Did a nice little tequila flight last night.

Siete Leguas Reposado - Solid all around...just like the entire line.

Ambhar Anejo - Better than I remembered. Really delicious.

Puro Verde Reposado - Lesser known. Very solid

Fogonero Anejo - Big, thick, sweet value anejo

JLP Anejo - One of the best value anejos out there.

Nice solid night of aged tequilas. I'm visiting in-laws this weekend...I'm going to need more.

Debating on picking up either Siete Leguas Reposado or Siete Leguas Anejo. The price difference is only $4 and though I've always loved the reposado, the pull of the anejo is strong. Also, remember me telling you that my bottle of JLP Anejo from Hi Time was different than the bottle-shape, label, etc. to what they have pictured on their site? Well, it's not nearly as good as the JLP Reposado that came in the same shipment. They appear to have been made at different distilleries too, so I'm guessing the source of what you sampled is not the same as what I've got. Mind you, it's not bad, just not as fine as their reposado which I thought was excellent.

Interesting note on the JLP. I've only had the ones in the newer bottles. Apparently they switched NOMs for the better. That's always a good thing. Either way, the sub $20 price point at Hi Time for JLP is pretty darn good.

Also, I always tend toward trying the new thing if I like something else from the same brand. I don't see it as likely that you wouldn't like the 7L anejo.

I picked myself up another bottle of Don Julio Reposado today. I can't wait to get home and crack it open. The last bottle I had was incredible.

That's what I ended up buying on Saturday when I discovered that Binny's was out of Siete Leguas. Can't wait to crack the Don Julio Rep open.

Now you guys are making me thirsty...

It might be my favorite of the Don Julio line (not better than 1942, but not that far off either).

Others may disagree but I find the Don Julio Reposado jaw-droppingly good and I'm thankful that it can be had for less than $40 when found on sale. My wife and I loved the stuff after a nice Mexican meal we prepared. Creamy and delicious. It may be the finest dessert tequila out there!
