Weller 12 flying off the shelves?

I've seen Chuck's and other's recent posts about shortages at Buffalo Trace. Usually Weller 12 is mentioned somewhere, and one or two responses typically say "Come to Texas! We have tons of Weller 12!"

I stopped at two stores at lunch (one ATX Specs and one shady place off Airport) and both had shelf space designated for Weller 12, but no bottles. There were plenty of Special Reserve and OWA 107 nearby.

I know two random stores don't indicate a trend, but found it very odd. Combine this with my last bottle of W12 being pretty skunky (compared to previous delicious bottles), and I'm going into conspiracy-theory mode.

Anyone else seeing empty shelves?

I'm one who says "Come to Texas! We have tons of Weller 12!" There are at least 50 Spec's stores in town and hundreds of mom and pop's. So, going to 2 stores and not seeing would not be all that unusual. The Spec's downtown is the one that most of us are referring to when we say Spec's and their site shows it in stock. http://www.specsonline.com/cgi-bin/showpage?keyword=weller&pageid=search

If you want to make sure they have it call before hand. I see it more in chain stores than I do in smaller stores. The small stores are about 50/50.

Standard Maker's Mark started flying off the shelves when people thought it was going away. I wouldn't be that surprised if this was a conspiracy to test the waters to see if they can increase interest and desirability by playing up the shortage.

Panic buying makes customers buy things in quantity that might not even be on the normal shopping list. So let's say a store normally stocks 3 cases of Weller 12 that takes 2 months to sell. If a shortage is announced, there might be two people that instantly go out and buy 6+ bottles, casual fans might buy a few more, and "speculators" might pick some up that they don't even plan on drinking. All of a sudden the shelves are empty, the distributor is out, and people start going into "bunker mode."

I know I've seen it in a couple of locations in ATX in the last couple of weeks. It may not be time for a full-blown conspiracy just yet. Try the Twin at Lavaca and 16th before you decide Big Bourbon has hatched a plot.

Finding Weller 12 on the shelves is becoming a little more hit and miss. Supposedly last year was the first year for Weller 12 as a once yearly release. Various "oddities" that happen in dealings with distributors is probably a factor in some areas too. You just never know any more.

Here in Phoenix, AZ, it comes out in November and sells out in about 4 months (last two years, anyway). Once it sells out, the website for our big chain store says "expected back in stock: November".

Crisis averted and conspiracies dispelled!

Third store (neighborhood store in north-central Austin) visited today had three bottles of W12. Picked up a bottle along with an OWA. Need to replenish my SB Blend.

Carry on. Nothing to see here. ;)

Meandering through stores around Atlanta, I haven't seen it in the past month or two (although I can't say I've been specifically looking for it).

You're not far from Houston. Might as well drop by and see the largest liquor store in Texas while you're here...and you might find more of what you are looking for.

Although I'm not a fan of W12 by itself, (I only buy it for SB blend), I never have a problem finding it.

Last year since the allocated once a year release it has been increasing hard to find as well for me.I have been told that most goes to the Chicagoland area to be distributed.I have one store within 30 miles that carries it or for that matter can even get it anymore,in retrospect a little over a year ago it was at any given store.I hate to see the '12 get even harder to procure but I've got enough to ride out the storm for quite some time,so bottle by bottle I just continue to bunker it away.

It saddens me that others would even consider coming into our fair state and raiding the liquor cabinet so to speak. It's not like we would travel out of state for alcohol.

What he said. There is no Weller 12 in Kentucky at present. Almost as hard to find as PVW. Crazy.

In April a Chicagoland store was selling 1.75's for $39.99 with a sign advertising it as a "while they last" sale. Go figure

Surpisingly enough I have been able to buy FR Small Batch and FR Single Barrel at the Bay Area Blvd. store when I couldn't downtown. They now have a "Check Store Inventory" feature on their website. It doesn't really tell you if they actually have it in stock, but it does show you if they carry it. It is very accurate with regards to the Friendswood and Bay Area stores.

Found a single place in Louisville. Wanted $40 per 750. I told him no thanks and walked out. Can't blame him based on demand/supply but I'm not paying it. Someone will.

And relationships/ product flow with distributors will vary greatly across the country. As will demand and supply. Kentucky is the homeland but not Graceland. Stuff sells very quickly around here.

We now have a weller12 list at the store.

During a visit to the BT distillery in late May, we were told that Weller 12 is in short supply. The tour guide (Freddie) hinted at the probability of continued short supply as more barrels are diverted to other products. We found none in KY during our trip. There are some stores in Indy with plenty in stock while others have not replenished their empty shelves.
