P&MLiquorsEric
This is why some stores are stopping even trying to carry the stuff. Can't please everyone.Though the manager could have been a little more discrete...

Old Lamplighter
Passed on EC21 @ $199.99. The clerk said he would open the glass case if I wanted to take a closer look. I responded, "No, I can see the price tag very clearly". :hot:Also, passed on ETL in same store @ $41.99 and the normal HW lineup, $59 & up. 393foureyedfox
Make 5 or 6 customers happy and 100s upset. These store owner's shoule NEVER tell someone asking about a certain product that they have it, but it is spoken for. They should just say they either didn't get any, or it is already gone. Nothing pisses someone off more (it's happened to me too), to be told that the store has what you're looking for, but you're not allowed to buy it. Just say you're fresh out, or if you really want to make a repeat customer out of them....apologize for not having any but offer a few bucks off something else appealing. Nothing wrong with a lil white lie in this situation. You either never got it, or you already sold it.

I had that happen to me not too long ago on a Scotch sampler gift pack. The guy at this store even went further & retrieved it from the back & put in my hands...then told me it wasn't for sale - that he was holding it for someone else...lol. MauiSon
I'm an admitted bottom-feeder. That is, I buy based on value. Good prices, I stock up; bad prices, I pass (usually). As such, I hold no grudge if a store funnels top-end products to top-end clients. I'd like to get a shot at 'em, but harbor no expectations. I do appreciate candor and honesty, though. I'd like to know what's passing through even if it's out of my reach. ["Uh, how can I get on that Gravy Train, Sir?"]I passed on everything today, as usual. I had him drop into a liquor store in his college town and ask about BTAC. They didn't have any but went to the back and brought out a bottle of PVW23. Just to show him. They told him that it was spoken for. They also had a VWFRR that they said wasn't spoken for but they wouldn't sell it to him because only the manager was allowed to sell it. He bought some rum. mbroo5880i
I passed on several things today. On the high end, I passed on a 375 ml bottle of OWA, 7 year (1984) distilled at SW. It was $149.99. They also had EC21 and a few other higher end stuff but none of it interested me.I went to another store and passed on several interesting offerings well. The most notable Smooth Ambler, 10 Year. It was $52.99. I just couldn't get the LDI for that price thoughts out of my head. It was decent but I think there are other offerings that I prefer in that price range and lower. I may end up getting it at some point but not today. squire
Sometimes you just want to grab a bottle of Beam 8 Star and ask when it's going to be on sale.

mbroo5880i
wWow. Did you offer the guy $10 (the actual price) for the OWA?No, I am generally pretty polite and just say "no thanks" or tell them that I am still looking. He seemed excited because it was SW. I wasn't as excited.

Mix it together and you have sale priced beam 8 star.
squire
Thanks for the recipe Eric but I would miss that cool 8 Star label.
P&MLiquorsEric
The label is thoughtful and elaborate. I could see the draw. Blended whiskey is just whiskey flavored and colored vodka. Grain neutral spirits sounds much more American. I would be curious as the the rise of bourbon blends. KY gentleman from Barton, 8 star and Kessler from beam are the most popular around here. jwacky
Passed on some Four Roses single barrel on sale, a private selection FR OBSK, and Willet 4 year rye. Might end up with one or all three tomorrow, really just wanted to stop in and look tonight. I've actually never had a 'regular' FRSB (though I have had the OBSK) or the Willets. tanstaafl2
Passed up a store selected FR OBSO 9yr 8mo Barrel Proof at $49.99. First of all, it didn't seem all that compelling as a barrel proof FR being it was only 104 proof. Second, the manager, who had just told me that their BTAC allocation was "spoken for", took another gentleman into the back who walked out with ER17, GTS, THH and Lot B. So if my money wasn't good enough for that, I put down the FR (mind you, I've spent quite a bit of money at this store, whether they know it or not). I did buy two more Ritt BIB DSP 354 for the bunker though, as this store has the best price around on that one.It is often not just about how much money you have spent in a store (someone has always spent more, and probably a lot more) and more about how memorable you make yourself to the people who make the decisions about who gets what. If they are whiskey drinkers themselves then it sometimes is a little easier to just demonstrate you know something about whiskey and always make conversation when you are there (While avoiding telling them are mistaken in a confrontational way when they inevitably say something goofy, which is sometimes a challenge!). I often might need several bottles but will spread out purchases over several trips (harder to do unless it is on the way of course) to increase my chances to build a relationship. If you aren't able to set that hook sometimes you just have to move on to another store if that is an option or plan on doing without and hope for a bit luck! Fortunately I have also managed to develop some good relationships along the way at a few stores that now go beyond what I hope they can get me. But that takes time. And I pretty much always take his recommendation unless it's something I've had previously and didn't like (in which case I'll tell him that nicely). So when it came time to do the BTAC/Pappy thing I had my choice of bottles. jwacky
I was deciding between a Willet 8 year and 10 year, passed up on the 10yr. Quick skimming through some reviews made the 8 year sound a bit more appealing to me. Also left some Weller 12 on the shelf. It's fairly easy to find around here and I'd already spent enough.
