Just checked by bunker and no OGD, even though I thought I had a bottle. Will fix that tomorrow, times a few if possible.

Took a screen grab of the 'other' OGD114 page in question and there's really no mention of any discontinuation other than some guy asking about it. Still skeptical, or maybe I'm just unwilling to join in the 'hoard mentality' with anything. Sucks if it disappears as it's good stuff and a great value, but I'll just move along to something else, if so.

This is why I never believe 95% of what I'm told by distributors or stores. It's not that they are necessarily lying for the sake of lying, they just either don't know and feel obligated to tell you something or are repeating something they have been told (that's not true.)

That discussion in that attachment is over a year old...I think there have been 3 other countervailing rumors since!

Which is why I'm not buying it. Something randomly resurfaces and it's full on panic time. And people wonder why those "Going out of business!!" sales work so well...

I'll just say this, and take it for what it's worth...I opened a newly purchased bottle of OGD114 a couple of weeks ago, and it does not resemble the whiskey that I am accustomed to with this brand. Totally missing that yummy "burnt corner of the brownie pan" taste that I love. This flavor profile has always been a huge signal to me in identifying OGD, so much so, that I would say that it would be one of the 2 or 3 bourbons that I think I could get in a total blind tasting. This bottle has none of it. Instead, it has been youngish and extremely grassy. It's not "bad", it's just not the same. But, I am extremely disappointed, and hope it's just one of those weird things that happens in whiskey-making, from time to time.

This isn't meant to support anything stated in this thread. Just, sayin'...

Dang, Johnny! That would have been a great question...Before I began spoutin' off on all this crap!!! This bottle is a 12, in fact. That is hopeful news, as maybe it is just one of those weird whiskey-makin' things. I figured that since my monger brought these in not too long ago, they were very recent bottles. I'll search out a 13 and hope for the best. I'll PM you first to help set me straight before I post my findings. :falling:

I'm hopeful as well - I have a few '12s & '13's set aside... Working through an ND bottle at the moment though and it's delicious!

Indeed. Though you know, I have always preferred the Beam 114 to the ND. But, the ND is really nice, too. I think that they don't taste similar at all, even though everything (mashbill, yeast, etc) supposedly transferred from ND to Beam.

Best to stock up under any circumstances, one cannot have too much Old Grand Dad.

Amen. I was making a run to my favorite VA ABC store today (about 45 miles round trip but the MGR knows bourbon). Picked up an ETLSB (laser date 1/17/13) among other things & on impulse picked up a boxed OGD114. If' I'd known, I'd have bought several. Darn. Maybe I can think of a reason to go back . . .

i doubt it. Id imagine theyd drop the 80 before they drop the 114, and I bet they raise the price of the 114 to a more realistic $30 before they drop the 80 proofer.

Terroir and all that jazz =]b

OGD114 is one I've stocked up on to hedge against potential moves by Beam to dilute the brand - a little paranoid / nervosa on my part.

;)

In reality though, I don't see it happening in the near term with Beam's newfound "Hep Cat" PBR styled "Olds" campaign but one can never be too careful...

Hell, I just bought one recently and it is LOT 1!!!! That must be the biggest damn lot in bourbon history

While panic bunkering may not be warranted, maybe - just maybe - such a demand surge would push the thought out of anyone's head at Beam who might have it :)

Personally, having consumed about 100 bottles of this stuff over the last few years, I prefer the 12 to the 11 or the 13, although I notice only a marginal difference between any of them.

No, there was another one posted on a different Facebook page today. That's what got me concerned.

Normally, I'm not such a sucker but with all the changes in the last year (AAA10 year discontinued, OC10 being discontinued, age statement dropped from VOB, HH BIB 8 year being discontinued, the still unconfirmed status of HH BIB 6 year, WT's move to 91 proof on their specialty bottlings, etc), I wouldn't totally rule it out. It's one of my favorite pours and I'd hate to see it go away.

I agree. Whether the rumor is true, the writing is probably on the wall on this one. If it doesn't get phased out soon, it probably will be within the next year or so. It serves as a good reminder to diligently watch what is happening with standard bottles and to not take for granted that because something is available today that it will be available tomorrow. Look how quickly VOB 6 year disappeared from the shelves.

They already dropped the base OGD expression from 86pr to 80pr in the last year (with little to no fanfare)...

Eight years is about the right spot for the Grand Dad formula, it was when National made it and Beam initially released Hayden with an 8 year age statement as well.
