So lets see, we have plenty of this wheat whiskey that is not moving too well what are we to do?

We make it a limited edition and profits will soar.

If that was their impetus (which from a business standpoint is a great idea), the result is a 13 year old barrel proof wheat whiskey. It's a fairly unique product, and the reviews so far have been excellent. As far as I'm concerned, we can count this a success.

I agree that this is a success. I'm guessing that they didn't have some sitting around aging almost twice as long as the standard product "just in case" the original product wasn't selling the way they wanted so they could move a bunch of it (call me skeptical, if that is what was being implied earlier). Heck - they're getting $35 (per the chart) for a 7yr wheat whiskey, when WSR as a wheated bourbon was less than half that (even when it had the 7yr age statement). Maybe they priced it too high to begin with, placing a premium on how unique it is (not sure there is another wheat whiskey on the market accessible to the masses?)

I don't think this was any nefarious back-up plan. Why did they pick 13 yrs? Who knows - I'm not sure how far in advance they plan the PHC line. It is a nice whiskey - I'm not sorry I bought one at least. And to my knowledge, the only barrel proof wheat whiskey on the market - so it falls under the umbrella of "rare and unique", which are elements I normally associate with the PCH line.

Look, I'm plenty cynical when it comes to the current bourbon market. But I'm giving HH a pass on this one. It is too good to count as a cash grab. If it works that way for them- great. I'm happy to buy at MSRP of $90 because this is a winner pure and simple.

The PHC release is actually from the very first runs of this wheat whiskey. Ever. It is the oldest stock of it possibly available. I for one hope that they've held back some from each year to keep this going, because it's a fabulous whiskey.

Exactly!! I also would love to experience this even older (maybe 18 yrs?), and at barrel proof. Comparing this to the 7yr product shows how much the extra time has brought it, and it doesn't seem to be in danger of becoming "over-oaked".

A success it may very well be!

All I am saying is if you are a distiller that has aging stocks of bourbon "investment" and you see the prices of almost all other bourbons on the rise, you need to come up with a strategy.

Just food for thought.

Agreed - Heaven Hill has knocked it out of the park with issues like the ECBP and this PHC - finding a way to deliver a superior product, a more clamored-for product, and make more money in the process. Good for them, good for us.

What should they do with it? Save it until it's old, over oaked, and the bourbon boom has died down? Distillers, blenders, and rectifiers are all businesses. All businesses need to make money. I feel like HH's strategem of releasing an excellent barrel proof wheat whiskey at a respectable age and fair (considering the market) price is something we should all applaud, and then hope to hell everyone else moves in that direction instead of the one much of the scotch whisky industry (and bourbon/rye NDPs) is moving in: premiumized NAS smoke and mirrors.

Hit BevMo in the Bay Area on Friday. SoCal seems to get stuff faster. You might call around.

Not this time it seems, as my local BevMo got its three bottles yesterday or the day before, as did a local overpriced liquor store. Or maybe greater LA got theirs before and I am just in the boondocks relatively speaking.

Also, consider this is one of Parker's Heritage releases. Parker will have to retire soon (which will be a great loss to all of us), and he has a splendid track record of doing right by the public with his namesake releases. One of the few series I will buy, untasted, with complete confidence.

I don't think he would be keen to have one of the last of his namesake bottlings be a scam to dump leftovers on the whiskey drinking public.

It seems like a lot of people like this whiskey but what does it compare to?

I liked POH but it is a bourbon so not sure how they compare.

This finally made it to my local and I picked up a bottle today. Can't wait to crack it open for kickoff of Ohio State's revenge win over Mich St. (or use it to drown my sorrows if the buckeyes lose)

I plan on picking up another bottle for the bunker soon.

Buckeye fan in Utah? Right on! If the Bucks win I'll toast you with some PHC8. (I grew up in Ohio.)

Buckeye fan in Utah?

Yep, grew up in Columbus and re-located to Utah.

Really enjoyed the weekend, both the buckeye victory and the PHC8. This is some really high-level stuff. Nice and smooth from the 13yrs yet very full-bodied from the non-chill filtering and cask strength. Seems more akin to a high-proof wheated bourbon than it does to its own standard Bernheim Original.

Would be interested in hearing notes from a sbs with this and Makers Cask Strength.
