What Bourbon Are You Drinking??

All right guys (and gals)!! Tell me all about the best bourbon in the world (yep I mean the one you are drinking right now!!).

Tonight I am having VOB BIB. It is all bluster and spice, with just enogh corn sweetness to balnce it out just a little. Fabulous, and at only like $9-$10 a great buy!!

well it just so happens I am sippin a pour of my WT 101 and lovin it, but I am still a baby robin when it comes to bourbon so cant comment to much. I do think my next trip to the liqour store will be for another WT bourbon.

You might be a newbie, but you did pick a good bourbon toast.gif I started the evening with Pizza and a black and tan. I have since moved on to WT 101 as well. A staple of any self-respecting liquor cabinet, WT101 provides all the flavor and puch one could want in a bourbon. There is a lot in store for you when you discover WT bourbons. I am enjoying a nice glass of 4 Roses Yellow Label that Mark & I acquired from the Lets Talk Bourbon at this year's festival. It is taking the edge off a hard day at work and helping me unwind for the evening!

Not actually drinking right now (had a Saz 18 last night, though, and it was very fine). My favs thus far are Blanton's, WT 12, ER 10 and ORVW 15 (107 proof). Others I like are OCPR 13, VSOF 12, and OGD 114. I've got Hirsch 16 and 20 and Pappy 20 in the bunker, along with ER 17. And I'm still on the Stagg hunt, but, like another poster said, maybe I'm just not worthy of The Stagg. frown.gif

Rye-wise, I like VWFR 13 and OROTR 12, along with the Saz 18. Very different ryes and all excellent. In fact, I like all the other ryes I've tried (Beam, Old Overholt, Pikesville Supreme) except for Old Potrero, which seems to rapidly become undrinkable after the bottle is open for a few days.

The only bourbon I dislike, thus far, is Maker's Mark: I find it harsh tasting, even downright bitter (I know, weird), and adding ice and a splash doesn't help much. Funny, because I REALLY wanted to like it and it was the first bottle I bought when I wanted to get more serious about fine whiskey. Fine company, good web site, etc., but I just don't like the standard red wax product. Ah well, different strokes ...

I'll bite. Er, sip...

Tonite it is Woodford. Chosen to match a Partagas Humitube,

that's been waiting a while. The Partagas is light-medium bodied

cigar with some light spicy notes from the camaroon wrapper.

It's pretty easy for a Bourbon to overwealm a mild

cigar, so the Woodford/Partagas seems a good match.

A first whiff of apples, then citrus, and pretty light,

not much tannin at all (ie, not Knob Creek). Doesn't seem

to want water added to this one...IMHO.

And all the cares of the day drift away in puffs and sips.

Not bourbon tonight, but Wild Turkey rye, in remembrance (for wont of a better word) of my first rye, the Van Winkle 13yo, which I finished bit-by-bit over the past month or so. I like it, so far. In fact, I'm starting to wonder if I don't like the couple of ryes I've had better than most of the bourbons. Strange, really, since my preference among the bourbons seems to run toward the wheated ones. Ain't no wheat in straight rye whiskey. Go figure!

tonight it is Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I intended to buy something else when I went into the store...Ky Spirit...but they had a nice gift box of Rare Breed with two really nice tumblers with the WT logo for just the same price as a bottle. I like Rare Breed...excellent taste and an attractive bottle/wooden topped cork. Definately Spirit though the next time I get a WT.

With a list like yours, you are definitely worthy of Stagg! If you can appreciate the bourbons you already have, Stagg will fit nicely along side them.

Actually, everyone is worthy of Stagg, it's just that many might be overwhelmed by it if they hadn't experienced alot of bourbons, including some higher proof ones. Case in point - I was at a work dinner on Wednesday night. One coworker was intrigued with my bourbon drinking, so I ordered him a Makers Mark neat. He enjoyed it, but when he tasted my WT 101 neat, it was too intense for him.

I've been spending the night up at my parents and the only bourbon my dad has is a new 1.75L bottle of Maker's Mark I gave him a few weeks back. (I've had it for a while and wanted a reason to open it!) Being too lazy to go get anything else, I cracked the seal on it nonetheless.

This is the weekend of 'open bottles you've had lying around far too long that you don't much care for .' Tonight it is Knob Creek. I've had this bottle for about 2 years now and never wanted to open it since not caring for the first bottle I had... Well tonight it got opened to drink on the rocks while watching season 4 of the Sopranos on DVD.

WTRR.... was hoping to find that magic I found in the 12... its not quite there, but I'm still enjoying it quite a bit. I have to admit, I'm becoming quite a WT fan... next shopping trip I'm planning on grabbing Rare Breed and Kentucky Spirit... maybe even a couple of the standard bottlings too.

Very few things live up to the magic of Wild Turkey 12. Russell' Reserve is a mighty fine bourbon and one of my faves, but it isnt in WT 12s league, on the bright side it is 1/2 the price and widely available so I can enjoy it whenever I want. I might add the that the whole turkey line is great all the way down to the 101 (even the 80 proof is passable) which is a permanent fixutre at my abode.

Tonight was John Lee Hooker night.... Elijah Craig 12yo, Johnnie Walker Gold Label, and Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale 2003. Not really sure why, but it seemed like a good idea.

Great stuff, isn't it? One of my favorites. I am somewhat surprised it doesn't get more attention here, but then again, that's ok, because there'll be more for me! (At least when I go to KY - can't get it in NC.)

Sitting on my back porch, on one of the nicest nights in a long time, I had a nice pour of Elijah Craig 18 Year, accompanying a A. Fuente Gran Reserva Rothchild. More details elsewhere. . .

Oh happy day, I cracked the seal on a fresh bottle of Weller 12yo. Is it wrong that this excites me as much as a new bottle of Stagg? confused.gif

Maybe only a little bit.

The good thing about cracking open a bottle of Weller 12 yo is knowing that you can drink as much as you want - there's plenty available and it isn't expensive.

It's also wearing your favorite comfy shirt and leaving the Armani suit in the closet.

Just tried Ancient Ancient Age 10yo for the first time, followed by a taste of the old Beam 7yo 90-proof Black Label (no longer produced -- now it's 80 and 8) -- I liked them both. Some differences, some similarities. More wisdom later (maybe!).
