Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel.

I've commented somewhat negatively about this bottling in the past. However, as I'm about to finish this bottle, I find the quirky taste (nutmeg, etc.) intriguing -- an interesting contrast to what I consider the mainstream flavors. Forgive me Mr. Lee, but it's the kind of drink I might keep toward the back of the shelf for the occasional change of pace, next to the s----h. I'll probably buy another bottle, but not right away.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

2nd glass and last bit of my Michter's US1. I really enjoyed the whole bottle. When the rest of the crew was over the other night Cliff wasn't too impressed with it and Bob, after some time, said it was ok but he would pass on buying a bottle probably. I really don't know how Chris felt about it. Everyone was shocked by the nose as I remember though. Just shows to each is own... toast.gif

My first experience with Eagle Rare Single Barrel tonight -- I think I have a new candidate for my favorites' list. The nose is really subtle -- it takes a long time in the glass to give up much -- and the palate hides at first sip, but explodes about mid-palate and blossoms into a long, rich, satisfying finish. My first impression was this is a bourbon which adopts the best parts of single-malt Scotch -- the floral sweetness of a Speyside, and a touch of smokiness -- and combines it with the flavor of Kentucky corn and white oak caramel and vanilla. A very good, complete whiskey, especially for the price (under $30).

Rowan's Creek. I picked up this bottle when I was in Atlanta last spring and haven't touched it for a few months. But I'm glad I've gone back to it as I'm enjoying it quite a lot tonight. It has a dark color, and a rich, woody taste that has a hint of carmel. Definitely worth checking out if you like a stronger tasting bourbon.

Last night, I cracked open my bottle of ORVW 15 yr 107. Had to celebrate that my wife and I found out that we are going to have a boy (due date March 17....hmmm St Patrick's day and his dad likes whisky what a coincidence) I had bought this bottle prior to moving and man was it good. A strong yet sweet aroma and the taste was fantastic. An excellent choice for a celebratory drink. toast.gif

Congratulations! Good luck in the coming months. Take it from a semi-old fart - enjoy your kid(s) as much as you can while they are young.

I am enjoying my 10 yo son alot now. I am still a cool guy to him (he wants to go to my college and work for my company!), but it won't be too much longer before he'll grow up and start gaining his independence. I am going miss these days.

Tonight it's Hancock's President's Reserve Single Barrel. I am really enjoying this bourbon and wish more people would talk about it, it is deserving of more mention. My only wish would have been to get another bottle or 2 while in KY. It was about $15 less there than here in NY! While I like it, I will not spend the $50 price tag it carries in the city...

Next time I trek to Covington, I will buy a bottle and give it the special treatmen it deserves. It just seems to get lost in the shuffle among all those Single Barrel Offerings from Buffalo Trace (Rock Hill Farms, Blantons, Eagle Rare 10, etc). Maybe we shouldnt let it suffer that fate. honestly I can say I have tried that bottling yet, but it will be on my list to buy now.

As much as I adore the higher proof bottlings by van winkle (and weller & Fitzgerald for that matter), 90 proof seems to be a good point to accentuate the smooth roundness of wheated bourbon. "Lot B", VSO Fitz 12 are among the real taste treats of wheaters at around ninety proof, smooth sippin whiskey.

I got a bottle of ORVW 10/107 recently and am thinking I really like it. Compared to weller 7/107 its got less bite and more fruit--pretty yummie.

Tonite, its Wild Turkey Rye... how's that for different!

First drink was caught me off guard. Got used to it during the refill, and am now appreciating its rye-ee goodness.

Cheers!

Tonite started with Weller Centennial and has moved on to Wathens. Two VERY different bourbons, both EXCELLENT! Life is good!

Two very different bourbons, but they kinda seem like a logical progression to me. Weller Centennial seems the least "Wheater-Like" of all said bourbons I have tried, and then you just keep gaining intensity as you pour wathens. Oh, maybe I think that way because they are bottled in the same shaped flask. . .

LOL

Thanks to Bobby, Dave in Canada and CL for your congrats. We are very happy about the news. It'll give our daughter (who'll be two in about 3 weeks) somebody else to play with and I'll finally have another guy around the house. I think that will be good in the future!

Any way, I am going through my VW collection right now, I think. Tried the ORVW Rye and truly enjoyed it last night, maybe the bottle just needed to breath a little or my cold left me. That was very smooth stuff and had a citrus and peppery flavor. Very different from what I am used to,but very good.

My Eagle Rare Single Barrel is really growing on me. And that about describes the experience of it, too. It begins so subtly you're tempted to climb into the glass after it, then explodes with flavor, warmth and a blossoming finish. And, afterward, the empty glass gives off more aroma than the new pour, tempting just another, small taste. (Oh, all right!)

Good point about the shape of the bottles. I hadn't noticed that. Interesting that I didn't move on to Elmer T. Lee!!

Tonight I finally cracked the seal on my bottle of 1792. This is one interesting whiskey. The nose is deep and rich and woody. Suprisingly, I dont get much of the wood on the palate, I got a medium-big, round whiskey in my mouth with lots of fresh cracked nut flavor. Also on the fromnt of my toungu I get young sweetness, almost like white dog. The finish is all Barotn though, with the rye kicking in nicely (very much like that great VOB BIB finish). This one is a gem and I hope they do expand into Ohio, I want more already!!

TomC

PS despite me dogging on it a little before, I reallly like the packaging on this bourbon, as it really plays to how special this whiskey really is.

Last night it was EC12. Lately that's been my serious 'go-to' bourbon when I can't quite decide on the mood. Remember when people were talking about it having different flavors on different nights? Well last night the pour kept shouting "MINT!" Not the menthol/rye thing, but more of an "add simple syrup to me and you'll have a julep" kind of taste.

Oh, and no, I hadn't just brushed! lol.gif
