What Bourbon Are You Drinking??

Last night was a triple header....one cigar and two bourbons. I smoked a Gispert (Honduras) first with ORVW 10/107 and then opened up the '03 Stagg (added a little H20 and one ice cube). Both were great. The Stagg is all over the map with flavors.... a real fiesta going on in the nose and mouth.

Last night I dipped intp a bottle that has been collecitng dust. Basil Haydens. It was like drinking slightly sweetened water. I used to really like it. Now it is good, jsut not so flavorful like all of the others I have been dipping into lately. I enjoyed it and relaxed and will enjoy it again, when I want something simple.

Hence, the moniker "brown vodka". I didn't coin it, but I agree with it.

Kentucky Spirit. I'm near the end of the bottle on this one (alas!) but I've noticed an interesting phenomenon, and I'm trying to figure out if it's in my head or not. This bourbon seems "mellower" than when I started the bottle, and I'm wondering if it's "breathed" or if some of the alcohol has evaporated, making it slightly less proof, and thus taking away some of the burn. Anyone have any thoughts on this...does some of the alcohol evaporate from nearly empty bottles of bourbon?

Got that replacement bottle handy? Next time do a side-by-side of the new bottle vs. the depleted one. (Of course, this may not be as accurate with KS due to barrel differences!) Some s****h drinkers are definitely convinced that an open bottle changes character, and even go so far as to split their bottles into smaller ones and put marbles inside to minimize airspace. Is it worth it? I personally don't bother, but it depends on your opinion.

My local store had Jim Beam’s small batch bourbons set out, so I figured why not….I am sipping from all four. I am sipping them straight, which at what…126 and 107 proof for Bookers and Bakers kind of knock your socks off. But, Basil’s pales in comparison. This tasting is so hard to do -- such a hardship.

This afternoon while doing some work on the computer I am sipping on a virginia gentleman 90 aka the Fox. It is a very good bourbon especially for the afternoons as it is a light bourbon. It has a smooth vanilla taste with an easy finish and a kind of viscous mouth to it that I find very satisfying. No great jolts here,no sense of ethonal,just a smooth and flavorful mouthful of enjoyment

Tonight it's Woodford Reserve. I know, I know...with all the commotion surrounding the idiotic lawsuit I should be boycotting the stuff, but it was only $19.99 on sale. Actually, this particular bottle seems infinitely less impressive than I remember. In fact, I can hardly distinguish it from its sibling Old Forester 86. Maybe the lawsuit thing is swaying my taste buds!

Tonight, it is WT Rare Breed, straight. While participating in the SB.com chat room all by myself. The RB is very spicy, tonight. And wonderfully thick, rich.

Friday afternoon went to The Throroughbred shop to meet Tom Bulleit and taste his bourbon. Had a great conversation with proprietor Sal Marino and Tom. Jeff and Leslie were there as well. After that, off to UK basketball, followed by relaxing cocktails in front of the fireplace at Nicholson's Cigar bar. WT 12 on the rocks and a Macanudo Hampton Court Maduro. Nice combo. Smooth bourbon, mild cigar. Topped off the evening with a Jefferson Reserve straight. This is why I live in the Blue Grass. Bourbon, Basketball, Bourbon and friends.

Leslie and I had a great time as well. Ed and Patty are wonderful people and fun to hang out with. Tom Bulleit was a very nice and interesting man to talk to. Got a signed bottle and a shot glass and headed to the game. Just a couple minutes into the second half Ed finds us and says he has better seats. Wow did he . Center court Row A seats 1-4. That'll never happen again. At Nicholson's we relaxed and had a Macanudo, courtesy of Ed. I paired it with an EC18 and a Kentucky Spirit. Lovely evening and hope to do it again.

Wathen's Single Barrel. Sadly this is the end of my last bottle. Very unique bourbon IMHO. Tonight and am getting a hot taste on the front of the palate, but a smooth and mellow taste on the finish. I like it. Must get more soon.

Tonight I'm taking my first taste of my new Weller's 12yo 1.75L (the only size available in Middle Tennessee). It'll take a while, at my pace, but I'd bet I'll finish the bottle. More alcohol burn than I expected at 90 proof, but mellows out nicely, and the finish -- well, I think it may be my all-time favorite finish. A real beauty, visually, in the glass, with a brown-sugar sweet nose that gives a suggestion of the alcohol burn noted earlier. Not really any strong flavors, though I think I sense a little leather and molasses. All-in-all, I put this right up near the top of my value-for-dollar bourbons. Plus, the bottle has this neat, no-spill plastic spout that keeps me from having the lick the neck of the bottle after I pour.

Hancock's Presidents Reserve 88.9 Proof. got it as a gift. It does not say anything about aging on the bottle, and idea why?

Sinus's are clear once again and the Stagg was calling. I broke the seal and poured two fingers into the Riedel Bourbon Glass. My concern over this being as good as last year's were dismissed. This bourbon is big and loud with background subtleties. New tastes in this year's version are dried figs and burnt toast. Enough like last year's product to keep up the reputation, different enough to make the trip to the store worthwhile. I had the overwhelming urge to put on a smoking jacket and sit in the parlour with this one.

Wathen's -- barely a taste, really -- perhaps 3/8 in. in my tall-boy shotglass.

I'm still nosing at this point (one sip, and it will be all gone). It's buttered whole-wheat toast, clover honey and molasses. Has there ever been a more wholesome, down-to-earth-appealing nose?

Not drinking it now, but Saturday was a red letter day as I sat with friends Rick and Brian and uncorked my newly purchased bottle of Pappy 20yr and Brian's bottle of Stagg. I sure am glad Pappy got first crack at my tastebuds because Stagg slagged em. Hooooeeeeeee.

Last night was a good pour of WT Rare Breed. Tasted great, this was only the second pour from this bottle and I am beginning to get a new appreciation for the WT line (enjoy Kentuck Spirit as well). I may have to get some of the others WTRR, WT101, etc.

Last night it was two very different pours. First I revisited my recently-purchased $19.99 Woodford Reserve bottle, and had the exact reaction as the first time: I was big-time underwhelmed. It really reminds me of plain Old Forester. I wonder if B-F has exhausted their supply of premium barrels!?

Since the WR didn't do it for me I switched to AAA 10yo. Yum! That did the trick!

I've been a bit underwhelmed by Woodford Reserve as well. It runs $30+ around here and I don't think it is worth the price. It is good, but if I'm going to spend that much with my budget, it better be spectacular.
