People are selling dusty WT 8-year 750s on secondary market sites for $160 and up. I really want one, but just can't pay that price. I am conflicted, though, since I am really liking my current bottle and dreading what will happen when it is gone.

I Agree With Squire. The difference is maybe at most 12% to my taste buddies, in favor of the 'dusty' 8-year-old. But, for that difference, I'd never pay more than a few bux for the upgrade.

To give $160 or more just encourages the flippers, and doesn't get you much improvement for your cheddar. Now, if someone wanted to offer me a CASE for $160, I'd be thinking about it.

I get it and that is why I am not a buyer. I would be a buyer at $100, but over that is pretty tough to stomach. If I can roll the dice and spend $80 on the new IW Harper (which I was also conflicted about), then I can damn well break loose another $20 for something that is (to me) known to be top tier stuff.

But, I don't really agree that the current version of WT101 is similar to the dusty 8-year version in terms of taste. To me, they are drastically different. And I do like the current WT101 just fine as well, but the older stuff (to me) is totally different -- different taste, texture, color and all of that. However, I also recognize there is no right and wrong answer when comparing tastes. It is all individual.

No, not the same. New computer controlled stills, higher proofs off the still and into the barrel, less age, honey barrels now being kept separate, the result is cousins rather than twins. Change the oven and the process and the same recipe doesn't make the same bread.

Passed on MM barrel proof for $59.99. I guess I joined the conflicted crowd with this one. Is it really twice as good then regular MM which is on sale for $26.99?

Finally found a bottle of the new ECBP, but walked out after it rang up at $100! They also had a case worth of Diamond Peak for $160 per bottle. It used to be a pretty good shop, but that will be the last time I stop in.

Picked up a good supply of RRSmBSB, so I was pretty well set and had to say no to the new HH PeachBerry. Maybe next time.

Ehh, haven't had one yet I thought was the equivalent of a 4R BP or an ECBP. Probably a good pass.

Passed on Harper 15 yesterday for 60something. Just can't get motivated to pick one up.

I hear you; my local store is trying to get me to buy one...but no motivation after the reviews here; just too watered down at 86 Proof.

went to a store that I thought was great with selection and price and was surprised to see major gouging. $60 for ETL, $40 for OWA and WSR, $55 for CEHT SmB and CEHT SB for $90. admittedly, I hadn't gone there for a couple of months, but things had changed quite a bit

The number of stores we're left with in the whole "Not going back THERE again" anti-gouging campaign definitely leaves one feeling like a polar bear atop a shrinking iceberg.

I saw a few bottles of OGD Bonded at $17 a bottle but for some reason it didn't seem important. When I got home I started thinking, that I had heard the the OGD BIB had been discontinued, in favor of the 114. Does anyone know if that's correct, or am I having a brain fart?

That would be a brain fart. The 86 proof was discontinued in favor of the 80 proof. 100 and 114 still in production as far as "we" know.

LOL! I love it! Thanks

Yea, the 86 proof is a turn off. At 90 I'd probably be a buyer. Will I actually be able to tell a difference? Probably not; I fully realize it's mostly psychological. But 90 has typically been my cutoff for other purchases, so I'm sticking to it!

That works for me too. It leaves us with a much smaller subset to concentrate on. Since AA 10 year was discontinued, is there any <90 proof bourbon or rye that isn't just cheapo well whiskey? I don't care what the advertising people say.
