Surprise! Yes, I'm posting here for a change.  I mowed the lawn today after I got home from work. When I was finished, I wanted something to drink other than bourbon. (FWIW, my son left most of a mixed 12 pack of Blue Moon in the fridge for me after we grilled out this past Saturday.) I decided to have a Belgian White. I grabbed it  and headed out to our back patio. The first one went down pretty quick and easy, so I decided to have another. ^_^ This time I went with a Summer Honey Wheat. Both were good, and really hit the spot. It was pretty nice to kick back, relax, and enjoy a couple of beers for a change.

Cheers! Joe

I was at my local watering hole last night for the weekly trivia night.  They have 25 or so taps, so usually the selection is awesome.  There was a sour event last weekend (a style I don't care for) so a high percentage of the taps were sours but I was still able to enjoy some other stuff.

Short's Guava IPA - nice and crisp, couldn't pick out guava specifically but a hint of tropical fruitiness, well-balanced with the hops

Abita Bourbon St. Alt - since the alt beer base was pretty light bodied, this was pretty much all bourbon coming through :D...only had a 5 oz serving of this one

Tallgrass Big Ricc RIS - really good imperial stout with coffee and chocolate

I'm drinking my first Stone Mocha IPA.  I've had coffee IPAs before but never a mocha IPA.  I never would have thought these flavors would work so well together but this is really, really good.  Has the taste of a great IPA mixed with tasty chocolate, I don't get much of the coffee though.

What's a good sweet 2x IPA for summer?

Or plain IPA

I'm not sure I've ever had a sweet IPA, but Perrin's 98 Problems is citrusy and floral.  I'm not sure how wide their distribution is, though.

Thinking about having a Hopslam later today.  Yard work on Father's Day just doesn't' seem right.

Mississippi Fire Ant Imperial Red Ale

8.8%, 80 IBU

  ccf00e22e1b04e15-FIreAntCan.png

Appearance: Dark reddish brown like old copper, eggshell cap with good lacing.

Aroma: Rich malt supported by darker tone hops, lively in a strong way without being heavy.

Taste: This is where it shines, rich malt, and mostly malt, through mid palate where the hops march forth. Hops through to the finish with lingering malt and hops in the aftertaste with hops putting a period at the end of the sentence.

Texture: Full without being heavy.

Overall: Definitely an Imperial style, this one strikes all the cords right in tune. 8% and 80 IBUs, this one could've been a bruiser but it isn't, surprisingly agile like a large man who turns out to be a graceful dancer.

Despite the global family tree it now has, a Budweiser on America's Independence Day still seems right to me.

Hoppy Fourth everybody! I invited this guy to the party.

Straight to Ale Monkey's Uncle Imperial IPA
8%, heavy hops

Burnished gold leading toward red, bright cap with very good lacing. The aroma is surprisingly bright, the hops jump out in an earthy, spicy way and malt quickly follows. Very good first impression. Some floral, hint of conifer, solid without being heavy.

Solid malt here with hop support. This is bigger, bolder and stronger, a true Imperial brew. The website says 8%, no mention I can find of IBUs, hops are there but not intrusive, certainly not the focal point, malt is main and hops play a supporting role. Mid palate hops arrive and sing the way to the finish. Lots of hops but bitterness is noticeable only in the aftertaste where it lingers just slightly. Pretty full texture.

Now, I can take hops as well as the next guy, I mean when you open the can this one hits you with a hop aroma discernable three feet away, yet that's just part of the picture. As you glass then lift to sip you're thinking hops but no, what presents is rich malt with hops following. Bit of a surprise but a nice one. Full on malt, good hop counterpoint, this one's a winner.

This was my favorite amongst the dozen or so beers we went through while waiting for the fireworks to start at Lenox from our perch 31 floors up!

Cantillon iris.JPG

A 2013 Cantillon Iris which is a somewhat non traditional Lambic from one of the last (maybe the last?) truly traditional Lambic producers in Belgium. It has an unusual formula for hopping and I might not have liked it as much fresh. But at 3 years old it seemed just right!

Pacific Gem Single Hop Pale Ale

Image result for pacific gem single hop pale ale

Appearance: Nice gold with good color intensity, white cap with good lace.

Aroma: Hops first, piney, citrusy, grapefruit hops, with some underlying sweet malt. Earthy spice as well.

Taste: Hops on entry and all the way through. Some caramely malt emerges mid palate but hops dominate. At 40 IBU this isn't especially strong in the hops department, comparatively speaking, but hops are what this brew is about. Lingering bitter aftertaste that isn't at all unpleasant but is present.

Texture: At least medium and then some.

Overall: I like the single hop premise even if it's not a favorite hop because it is something different and sort of an introduction to a specific hop character. This simple brew works pretty well and manages a flavorful balance for what is admittedly a hop showcase brew.

I'm not much of a beer drinker any more, but I like to have a smoked beer as the seasons turn. The local shop didn't have any Schlenkerla Rauchbier and all I could find was Dark Horse Brewing Fore Smoked Stout. Now I just need to wait for a cool Saturday to crack that open.
