What bourbon are you enjoying? Fall 2016

Going simple on this cold night with some Ezra Brooks 90proof.

I'm trying some SAOS Single Barrels. The first was a selection from the Annapolis Whiskey Society, a 10 year 94.8 proof "Long Nine". Very nice and one of the best SAOS single barrel's I've had. I liked it better than the other AWS Barrels called "Slandy's Select" but they were both good. After that, I tried a standard 9yr single barrel at 111.8 proof and it's very nice too.

 

I am going to miss these SAOS single barrels. I just hope the stuff SA will be releasing will be as good. I think they may run out of good sourced barrels before their own stuff is ready. The Yearling, Contradiction, and American Whiskeys need a lot more aging before they will be good.

Been rotating a few newly opened items consisting of Old Fitzgerald 12 year, KCSB and EWSB 2000.  The Old Fitzgerald and EWSB have been pretty good, and I'm just kinda like eh on the KCSB.  I'm hoping that one gets tastier with some air.

Tried the 1792 High Rye for the first time. I thought it was decent but not very complex. Finishing the night off with an 11 year, 3 month OBSQ.

Private barrel of Russell's Reserve Single Barrel from a private group that is easily the best I've had. Creme brulee for miles. Followed by a store selection KCSB that's 11 years old. Also amazing thought I give the edge to the Russell's.

Sticking with killing off open bottles I finished off the Belle Meade PS BS last night - preceded that with a bit of 4R Black Label, and Weller 12 beginning with the lower proof - then a night cap of 1792 FP

Not enjoying it yet, but I have my company Christmas party tonight and then a family Holiday gathering after that. The company party will be dry, but the other one is at a restaurant. I have some time in between to run home and change into normal clothes and will either be enjoying a glass of OGD 114 or Bookers..or maybe both.

Leaving after 6 month stay?????  How do you have any bourbon left in the house?  I would think a 6 month stay could deplete anybody's bunker.

Long cold winter's night and my plans got cancelled due to ice. Buckle up because we're starting with PHC 10 Wheated. Man forgot how wonderful this is. Glad I have one more in the bunker.

I was going to have a pour or two of SAOS 7 because the bottle is fairly low, and I hope to finish it off soon. However, I had a really crappy week at work, and the prospect for the weekend, weather wise, is also looking crappy. Bitter cold and more shoveling and salting.  I decided I needed something a little different tonight. I'm having a couple of pours of my own version of the SB blend. My version is pretty much equal parts of a ps OWA and a ps Weller SR. Just what the doctor ordered. It's really hitting the spot and tasting mighty good.

Bill has been stocking up for a while in anticipation of this event. As a member of his training staff, he was well prepared. Although I am sure the bunker did take a hit, I have no doubt it will be restocked in no time.

Tonight it was the second to last pour of some '14 THH which was fantastic even with being open for a long while. After that I spent time with a healthy pour of some good ole EC12. 

 

I have a feeling the THH will find the end of the road tomorrow night.

Started with a small pour of J. Magnus triple cask as a dessert-y treat and now the penultimate pour of a Stagg Jr. Batch 4. A couple sips neat and then with a bit of water. I really have enjoyed this bottle.

Took the day off and me and the wife went to a fancy place for Lunch.  I ended up having their BTAC sampler which consisted of mini-pours of BTAC bourbons: ER17, WLW, and GTS.  The ER17 and GTS were the 2016 releases and the WLW was the 2015 release.  My only other experience with BTAC was a bar pour of the GTS about a year and a half ago (pretty sure it was the 2014 version).  I was really excited to get to try the ER17 and the WLW for the first time, but was kind of expecting the GTS to be my favorite of the bunch.

 

I enjoyed all of them but I thought the order was pretty easy for me to rank.  My preference was :

1. WLW 134.6 (2015)

2. GTS 144.1 (2016)

3. ER17 (2016)

 

A few thoughts on each of these in reverse order from above (I won't say tasting notes, since I don't have good descriptors here, but rather just my experience from earlier):

ER17 - A good solid bourbon.  I've really enjoyed the 10 in the past, so I was excited to try this one.  Oddly I would describe this one as the "hottest" of the bunch.  A very enjoyable bourbon, but it's hard to imagine that I would order this at a bar if the price was anywhere in the neighborhood of it's BTAC counterparts.

GTS - If I had tasted this blind I would have never guessed anywhere near it's proof.  Amazingly drinkable given it's hazmat status. 

WLW - Wow!  Simply put this was one of the best bourbons I ever tasted (I think the only one I've enjoyed more was the FRLESmB 2015).  I also would have never put it's proof at the level it really clocked in at.  The most distinguishable thing here thought was the finish.  Easily the longest finish I've had the pleasure of experiencing.

Had some very good Barrell Bourbon batch 9 (13y, 112.something proof). I would recommend to pick it up if you see it.

Mannnn........after a craptastically bad day at work I wasn't sure what to drink Something special? Or should those be saved for better occasions? Something low shelf and basic? No.....I needed a pick me up. Started with some EC Single Barrel (private barrel pick). Then decided to go all in. King Stagg it is then - 2015. Stagg is my perennial favorite. Haven't had it in a while. Really hitting the spot tonight and is the salve that is washing the bad day away. Not sure what the final pour will be. ECBP? Or maybe more Stagg. Either way I win.

I've had some friends in town the past couple of days.  Between a few distillery tours (and my bunker), pours have included 4RYL, 4RSmB, 4RSB, OESO, OESK, OBSF, BT, ER10, EC (NAS), W12, OWA, Stagg Jr., ORVW ('16) and JDSBBP.  All proved to be some really good drinking but it is worth noting that 'the cult' represented well, as all the 4R barrel proofers held there own at the top of the tier! 

 

I have not had a pour of this years Lot B, but did find this ORVW to be much better than the last couple of Lot B's I've had the pleasure of drinking.  I also found that the JDSBBP got a little overwhelmed following some of the above.  My conclusion is that for me to see it at its full potential, I should probably stick to enjoying it without a lot of competition around.  Well, at least this group.

Relaxing after a big family dinner and cleanup at my parents' house.  I keep a bottle here for when I stay the weekend, so the only choice right now is standard 4RSmB, which suits me just fine.
