I broke the cork to my bottle of Russells reserve 10-year-old...  so the only logical thing is to finish the bottle

It's been a hard night - working on eliminating this open 1.75 of WSR... tough life but you know... someone's gotta live it

Great stuff - why do I chase after the 12 yr version????

It's a balmy 8 degrees outside.  So how do you stay warm?  Carpenters Christmas songs, fire going strong in the fireplace, and OGD BIB.  Life is good.

Two not-quite-bourbons and a go-to to compare them to: Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel; Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel-Proof; Elijah Craig 12 Yr.

The Crown Royal is very unique and tastes great.  Can it actually taste like Christmas in Manitoba?  I'm going to say yes.

The Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel-Proof is something I can't completely figure out -- will definitely require some more study.

And yes, the EC12 *is* really great  -- so I'm going to run out and bunker some more.  Catch me if you can...

That's funny.  One of my few cork breaks was in that same model of RR.

Wild Turkey has got to be the #1 offender of broken corks.

That Crown Royal bottle sure is sharp. But the Canadian whisky looks very light compared to the others.

It is definitely much lighter -- but at 103 proof, very full-flavored.  It's just a different flavor profile than I am used to.  Wanted to wander outside of bourbon-proper to get a better handle on what bourbon-flavor is all about -- but wanted to enjoy the detour. Hope to have more to say about both of these as the bottles make their way to empty...

Tonight side by side of OGD114. 1980 national distillers lot 4 vs current release.

The ND was amazing with lacquer, caramel, tropical notes and very round profile. The current release was angular with herbal buttery and corn notes plus a long finish. Both are good whiskies but the ND is one of top bourbons for my palate based on its flavor profile and those amazing lacquer notes.

In the Christmas spirit which means I hit the LE's with much more frequency. Had a strange beer with dinner (on the recommendation of my local liquor store guy) - Pineapple Milkshake by Urban Family Brewing. Really quite good but by the end of it I felt this raw burn on my palate. It may have been the acid from the fruit, I don't know. Because of this I played it safe and started with VOB6 after dinner. (If my palate was going to be shot, I didn't want to waste an expensive whiskey). By the end of the pour, all was back to normal. In fact, the VOB6 was tasting fantastic. Hard to believe it's a 5ish year old bourbon that cost $13.

Since all is good, I'm now back on schedule with a large pour of '15 GTS - the last of the bottle. Sad to see it go of course.

EC12, front age statement.

The nose is bliss.  Perhaps a touchy woody at the end, I find that I enjoy smelling this more than drinking.

I've heard a lot of people say the 80's ND OGD114 is very very good! Sometimes pictures can be deceiving, but the color looks a lot darker compared to the newer version. Cheers!

Color was certainly darker with the older bottle of OGD and it had a redish tint - almost like redwood bark. The current bottle was actually pretty transparent - almost reflective - like a Martinelli apple juice.

Had my first pour of (not bourbon) Pikesville 6 yo, the only thing I have to say is this, I don't regret buying this bottle, great Rye.

Now, Wild Turkey 12 yo.

Cheers !

I know, first world problems, but while I have been nursing my open bottle of ECBP Batch 3 (133.2) for some time now, I decided it was time to "spice" things up by opening up a different batch.  So I opened up a Batch 9 (135.6), and it was delicious.  Profiles between the two are certainly similar, but at least from memory, there were some definite differences.  I'll do a SBS one of these nights.  Once again though, preaching to the choir, you just can't go wrong with ECBP.

While the selection was slim, at least to pour was generous. Makers before dinner and a movie with the Mrs.

Watching the Flyers and Preds with a generous pour of SAOS 10SiB.

In between periods, caught a bit of "run Forest run".  LOL
