This is pretty viscous and is a murky caramel color. It starts off in a vague sweet note, but then I get a lot of berry flavor. Tartness follows and builds throughout the sip and it ends on a somewhat tart note. I remember this being sweeter, more caramelly, and boozier, but I guess that was a few years ago (when it came out), so this may have changed in the bottle. The tartness was particularly unexpected - perhaps it became a little infected. I actually enjoy what this has transformed into, though, so infected or not, it's ok by me. I've had a few from The Bruery. They make some pretty awesome brews. Cheers!

Bois is one of my all time favorites (although I have only had it twice and the last time was probably about a year ago). Don't remember much tartness so I think this may be progression in the bottle. If I ever get to try it again, which I suppose is unlikely as I don't have one, I will have to look for the tartness you describe.

I have a couple more bottles tucked away, so maybe you'll get to try it again after all! In regards to my tasting notes, I should probably disclose that I had lamb and Brussels sprouts for dinner, which could have thrown my palate way off. I like Brussels sprouts but I can see where they might adversely impact the palate!

The Bruery is far and away my favorite brewery and I look forward to their anniversary beers every year. I think Fruet is probably still my favorite year but every year is great, their anniversary beer seems to get richer and more decadent every year. The solera method they use really makes it interesting from year to year. I've never gotten a tartness in a Bruery anniversary beer. Knowing the problems the Bruery had with contamination in their barrels in the past it wouldn't surprise me if there was an infection though it would surprise me that the bacteria could survive in a 15% ABV beer. Were you drinking the bourbon barrel aged Bois or was it one of the variants? I'll be curious to hear if you get similar notes in the next bottle. Their beers generally fall into one of two categories for me: 1. excellent (e.g. Tart of Darkness), or 2. Very interesting, don't love it but glad I tried it (e.g. Roble Blanco). I don't think I ever got to try the Fruet - that was perhaps just slightly before my beer geekness really took off. I only drank about half of my bottle the other night so I'll revisit it tonight or this weekend and see if my impressions change. Hopefully my new champagne stopper is keeping it nice and fresh. I'll definitely post notes from the other bottles I have as well, but it may be a while as I was planning to age them a bit. Have you tried their 2016 anniversary beer, Poterie? I re-tried the Bois tonight, and had two other people try it as well. It lost a little carbonation from sitting in the fridge (even with the champagne stopped) but it tastes the same to me. Both of my friends confirmed that it has some tartness to it. It's still very, very good though. The tartness makes it very drinkable. As you said, I guess this has progressed in the bottle. Makes me wish I could try a fresh one next to this aged bottle.

When I lived in CA I wasn't far from The Bruery and was a member of their Hoarders Society so I bought and drank a lot of Bruery beer. Since moving to OH a year ago I don't buy nearly as much beer from The Bruery and I have to seek it out a bit more, but I do hope to pick up some bottles to try it and to keep my vertical going. Their anniversary beer is easy to take for granted because it doesn't seem to fly off shelves but it's a hell of a beer and really unlike anything that anyone else is doing; I can't wait to try the Poterie. Kpiz
I started the night with the Rex Noctis from Sanctum Brewing, which is a very nice (if a little thin) bourbon barrel aged stout with plenty of bourbon influence. After that, I moved on to a 2011 Old Stock Ale from North Coast Brewing, which has lots of dried fruit flavor and goes down surprisingly easy for 15% ABV. Although my mouth doesn't feel the booze, my body does - will have to finish this one another night!
weller_tex
I am very late to the Belgian beer party...but am absolutely hooked on Duvel Golden Ale as a daily drinker and the Trappist Ales as a once a week treat..Trappiste Rochefort 6,8, or 10 (love them all), Westmalle Dubbel, Chimay Blue, and also in the daily drinker category New Belgium Abbey Ale (although I have to drive to downtown Houston to get it). Kpiz
Enjoying a 2014 FiftyFifty Eclipse aged in Java coffee barrels. Nice thick mouthfeel with lots of dark chocolate notes. Not my favorite if the Eclipse line but good stuff nonetheless Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Fantastic stuff We were at the New Holland brew pub a few weeks ago and this was just about to be released. Had to settle for bringing home some standard DM. The coconut sounds fantastic. They also had a vanilla chai version but that's not a flavor combo that I usually like so I passed.

I didn't dig the vanilla chai version when I tried it before. Just a little too much going on there. Looking forward to the coconut, though. Kpiz
Having a pour of Stone Old Guardian oak-smoked barley wine from 2013. I get a bit of sweetness, then some bacon-y smoke, followed by bitterness. The smoke is nice but this one isn't hitting the spot...may switch to Scotch. I've had the regular (non-oak-smoked) version in the past and remember liking it. The smoke in this one threw me off a bit, even though I knew it'd be there. I have a bottle of the regular from 2013 that I'll open soon as well. Also, I probably should have drank these fresh rather than letting them sit - I tend to prefer hoppy beers fresh.
