I had a number of things with our local bourbon/cigar group tonight. We had MM and KC from the bar, and amongst the things we brought to share were a SAOS SB 9yr 108 proof, an unknown, (probably HH6 BIB), and I brought a sample of a port barrel finished whiskey from The Traverse City Whiskey Company. Despite a few intermittent rain showers, it was still a pretty good night all in all.  FWIW, I think the SAOS was pretty much the favorite. :)

Cheers! Joe

What did you think of the port barrel finished from TC Whiskey? I've had the regular bourbon and thought it was alright for a 3 year craft distillery. Definitely on the sweeter side, which is fine when I'm in the mood for that.

Duke's Mayonaise made in South Carolina?

My BIL's family in Brevard, NC uses it all the time!  Great stuff, IMHO.   :D

Thanks for clarifying this.  I was confused as to the flavor profile of egg salad made with this...

Noah's mill, I know people are pretty divided on it but I really enjoy how unique the flavor profile is.

Well, the issue there is, the flavor profile is drastically different with every bottle :)

Xactly! A number of years ago I stopped at a liquor store that had a tasting bar. They had a bottle of Noah's Mills open and I tried it. It was pretty good, so I bought a bottle. The bottle I bought sucked. <_<

Had a busy work day after 2 hours of sleep. I'm already half asleep, but I have to have my after-dinner drink. MM46 hits the spot right now, mild, sweet, inoffensive.

Starting off with a couple of samples gifted to me by another SBr first was 16 OFBB which was better than I expected since I don't care for OF in general. Then on to the highlight of the evening for me a 14 ORVW 10yr that's hitting all the right notes. Thanks again!

Such is the way with sourced whiskey.  Maybe two bottles not even from the same distillery; but the label is no different.

Noah's Mill 114 proof. My second bottle and liking it better the second time around. But at this price point and proof level the Bookers is stiff competition.

Had a sizeable last pour from my bottle of BT SP with some ice last night and finished the night with a pour of OF1920 with ice. Both great pours with ice.

Opened a new 4RSB last night. This one is a local store pick that's oakier than the SB that immediately preceded it. A lot of complexity and layering, a very interesting bottle.

A local store held a tasting last night of their recent barrel selections and was only charging $10/person. All their selections were excellent and with the exception of the Stranahan's, they each had at least one very positive attribute that made them stand out. We tried the following single barrel selections:

  • Stranahan's: it's been a while since I've had the regular-release Stranahan's, so hard to compare, but I thought this was just ok
  • Buffalo Trace: really interesting grape bubblegum nose and candy notes on the palate, much less grassy than the standard BT
  • Blanton's: thick and almost oily in texture
  • Four Roses OESF (10yo): full of flavor and well rounded with a hint of F-yeast mintyness on the finish
  • Russell's Reserve Single Barrel: rich and easy to drink for the proof
  • Taos Lightning Rye (~5yo, 108 proof): this had a crazy amount of spice flavor (like an exaggerated version of the old WFE 4-year ryes). Pretty interesting

Wow - a bargain for $10!  And I'm sure worthwhile from their perspective in moving some stock - I really wish stores here in GA would do this (aside from a few that go through the trouble of setting up a separate entity for the tasting business, etc).

After doing some reviews of truly bad stuff (Stolen Whiskey & Stolen Smoked Rum - blah), and having a cup of coffee to cleanse my palate, decided to celebrate Friday with some 2012 PHC (blend of mashbills).  Been nursing this bottle since Bruce pointed me to it over four years ago - and every time I pour it I am blown away by it (and dread the thought of not having it!)  While I've grown to appreciate the dark side (Scotch) more the last couple of years, this remains in my all-time top 5 whiskies.  Hope everyone else is having a great weekend!

A bargain indeed, especially since all of their picks were very good. They're offering a slight discount on the bottles to those who came to the tasting as well. I believe the BT discounted price was $22.99, which is a pretty good price around here.

Glad you're enjoying that PHC...sounds like you earned it! I had the blend of mashbills at a bar for my bday about 4 years ago and I loved it (don't recall which batch - there were a few IIRC). I have one unopened bottle of the 66.6% in the bunker and still kick myself for passing on several bottles of it at retail years ago.

The Stolen Overproof  Rum is great so don't let their gimmick products turn you off if you have a chance to pick up a 375, if you like Jamaican Rum that is.  As for me I thought it was going to be a Scotch night but it ended up being a 4R kinda night, the most I have enjoyed this bottle of OBSQ, that Arran did a nice job of setting up the taste buds. Guess it was a barrel proof night either way.

Finally got around to opening this up and trying.

Initially I got a hint of big red cinnamon gum on the nose.

Lots of alcohol.  Rather hard to nose.

Tastes of reasonable age.  Spicy and fiery. Caramel on the end.

Like WT101 on steroids.

Happy Weekend Everybody.
