I was in South Jersey yesterday and picked up a bottle of FEW distillery's American Straight Whiskey.   This is a blend of FEW's bourbon, rye and single malt whiskies.    Yet another winning example of a blend of straight whiskies; this one has an interesting marriage of rye spice and smoked Applewood (from the single malt).

Very nice. I stopped in a store I haven't been to in years yesterday and found their ER SiB store pick. I'm anxious to try it.

Truely majestic birds.  They are becoming very common around here.  Common but breathtaking.  There is an active nest about 1/4 mile from my house.  This is the second year for the pair on the creek.

I've seen them before when I was down there fishing KY Lake and Lake Barkley.  Seen them a couple of times at Nolin Lake, but have no idea where their nest is.

Wife was running Saturday morning so I decided to head over to Liquor Barn for their latest release.  By the time I got into the store they only had some 375 Blanton's and a good bit of ER.  I went ahead and grabbed a Blanton's and was getting ready to check out and ran into the girls soccer coach at our local high school (I do the PA for them).  Asked him what he was in there for and he had planned on trying to get a Blanton's for his son but by the time he got there they were all gone.  I asked if his son already had any Blanton's and he said no (I've got 2 bunkered) so I handed him the Blanton's and told him to tell his son to enjoy it.  Went ahead and grabbed an ER.  I've got one open and 3 now in the bunker (you can never have enough ER around).

While there I ran into my son.  He was heading over to Bardstown to pick up a 1792 FP PS from the gift shop that he had been in on the pick.  He followed me home and I rode over with him.  He stopped at his house and picked up the Stranahan's that he had gotten for me when he was out in Denver last month for some training.

After getting his 1792 we had some time to kill so we ended up at Preservation Distillery to do their tour.  I've done Beam and other more "industrial" distillers so it was interesting to see their setup.  We did their tasting and after the normal 4 samples we each got to select one other to try.  I tried the 12 year old bourbon that they had and my son did the 8 year.  Their was a bottle of their Harvest Rye sitting there and while the girl doing the tasting was checking out some other people out I snagged a taste of it.  It was very good, and my wife loves her ryes so of course I grabbed a bottle, just to keep my wife happy of course.

Went to a store I frequent looking for Weller 12yr. It wasn't on the shelf but after some friendly small talk they found one in the back. $45, they really do take care of their customers!

I bought a 1.75L WT101 for a backup. It was only $35+tx so I couldn't deny those Yankee thrift genes that I got from growing up in Massachusetts.

Got both of these for $32 each. Florida's ABC Vault system pays off quite well.

Have to say I was really disappointed with the bottle I bought.  Maybe you’ll have better luck.

I bought a bottle of Russell’s Reserve 10 year. We were out at a restaurant and saw it on the bar so I ordered it. I really liked it.

First pour was good. After that, mehhhh. Not worth the $$ if you ask me. The HH6 was much better from both  price and taste standpoints.

We just did a side-by-side review and I think its slightly improved, but not quadruple the price better. I'd pay up to $30 for the 7 year, but $25 for the 6 year. In a vaccum,  the new 7 year is pretty good though.

On a week long work trip. Snagged these two up to pass the time. I haven’t tried the McKenna Sourmash but for $11 I couldn’t say no.

Just snagged these. They allocated the ECBP & the Sazerac. They were on a "one per person" rack. My buddy bought one for me. The allocated rack had stuff like BT for $22.99, (not sure why it's allocated,  but it's a pretty good price).

The Saz, which I never see at home, was $22.99. The ECBP was $59.98.

I rarely,  if ever, see WTKS, so I bought it for $59.98. Don't know if that is a good price, but I love WT101,  so I'll try it.   The EC Rye is another one I've never seen. It was $29.98, so why not?

I picked up a bottle a couple weeks ago. Not a bad pour, but as has been stated, the price doesn't make sense. A week later I found McKenna 10yr on the shelf for cheaper, go figure.

That's about $5-$10 high on WTKS, but you got a great price on baby Saz and a solid price on ECBP, so as a whole I think you got a good deal. I have experience with ECR.

Funny you should state that.

The WTKS was the one I was second guessing myself on. The decision to purchase was made easier, after a bucket of beers at TopGolf ?

Did they give you any hints about where any of the different releases had been sourced from?

Our guide said that Marci Pallatella (BTW part of the college entrance exam scandal), the owner started buying old barrels years ago when they were selling them cheap.  She wouldn't say whose barrels were in each bottle.  Don't know whether they are trying to be that secretive or she just didn't know.  Most of the rye's are not that old but based on how long they've been open are still probably sourced.  Honestly, just about every question we asked regarding mashbill, etc. the answer we got was "That's proprietary".   Really?  The percentage of corn, rye & malted barley is proprietary.  She was cute so I let it go.

A very dear friend helped me out with a big project recently, he also has gradually been gravitating toward bourbon. He has been asking questions and surfing the SB forums so I suggested he pick up a couple minis and explore. He did but prior to SB.com exposure, the purchases were....unfortunate to be kind.

I decided to assemble a little care package from a couple of locals and picked up: JBW, JD single barrel, Old forrester-86 (would have preferred the 100),  Woodford Reserve, WT101, Makers Mark, Larceny, Elijiah Craig, Evan Williams BiB.

That should keep him busy for a little while and hopefully be a fun and informative next step in the journey.

Found all these in the last week. The HM10yr was on the shelf for $40. Both ECBP's were hidden behind the counter at different stores but offered when I specifically asked for it after a friendly chat, $63 and $65. I am back to my 3 bottles of ECBP quota bunkered, so will pass on them until this years batch A shows up. The KC cask strength rye was just because I am trying to expand my rye palate. So far I am a big fan of CEHT rye and Pikesville, but have not liked any of the 2 year old age stated stuff from smaller bottlers, so am sticking with stuff with some age. Anyone tried the KCCS rye? It will definitely be the next one I uncork.

Yes on the KC Rye.  I've had the Cask Strength & the 115 SiB.  I think you'll like it.  Actually I'm sure you will.

Still here in Myrtle,  so I headed back to the LS and snagged another one of these off of the "allocated" shelf. It's a limit of one.

I'll go back tomorrow,  and see what they have left.
