I am hearing great things about them. Any comparisons to other bourbons?

I've not been super impressed with New Riff although I've only had one bottle each of the SiB (a private pick) and the BiB rye.  The rye was not good at all, especially for $45.  It went into cocktails.  The bourbon was decent but not mind blowing by any stretch.  When these were first released everyone was saying how good it will be when they have older product to release.  It's been around two years and it's still just over 4yo.  I don't get it...

As I think I understand it, NR strategy is to skip a year of releases at 5 yr whiskey, and come out with a 6 yr. at that time.
As to the 4 yr bourbon, it still remains the only “craft” distilled bourbon that tastes like a decent legacy bourbon.  Certainly, not mind blowing at all, except that I was getting to the point that I didn’t think any craft could put out a decent bourbon.

Since I had the bottle out to take a picture, I thought I'd have a couple of pours of ER 10/101. Dayumm! I forgot how good this is. A great balance of mixed flavors. Rich, viscous and full bodied. Vanilla with brown sugar and spice tones, and just the right amount of what I call oak and smoke. The finish sets this one apart too. Long, warm and taunting. "C'mon Joe. Go ahead and have another pour. You know you want one. It's alright, I promise. If you have another pour, you can even have another pour after that. It's all good."

I've said this a hundred times before, and I'll probably say it another 100 times. If they still made ER 10/101, Weller Centennial and Wild Turkey 12, a lot of us would be pretty happy campers.

Oh, FWIW, we watched Despicable Me 3 tonight. ?

McKenzie wheated BiB and Wilderness Trail high rye BiB were both amazing to me.  Way better than New Riff.

Not great by any means but this is hitting all the right notes for me tonight.  I had spicy food tonight and my first pour or ER was too hot.  This at 40% is tasting great.  Sweet vanilla and caramel on the nose with buttered corn, sweet caramel and spice on the palate.  A good first step on the proof ladder..

I am so with you on this. The New Riff I've tried so far has not been great. I've tasted white dog of theirs and partially aged distillate that tasted good so I have faith in them. I think I've just been unlucky so far.

I've heard great things about that McKenzie. My own experience with Wilderness and the barrel picks I've recently been a part of tell me that Wilderness is about to come on in a big way.

Rare Breed. This month's BOTM and in my household, officially start of Turkey season.

I'll be partaking of all things from the House of Russell the rest of the month.

Pretty sure it’s this great cameo of the Dukes from “Trading Places”:

A certain empty bottle pic inspired me to pour some WTMK Decades. It just hits the spot when you're already in a Turkey groove (Rare Breed) but want something with a little extra age for the next pour.

One of my favorite movies.

It is good to hear you are enjoying a little bit of the good life. I hope things continue to get better for you and yours.

Cheers

The McKenzie was amazing, and disappeared pretty quickly. Wish I stocked up, but still have one left in the closet. Word is that a new batch should be released soon.

A couple pours from this weekend. Friday I had a sample of the rye whiskey from my mini barrel along with some LBPC920. The ECPS and JJB were in celebration of completing a big project for the kids on Saturday.

Started the evening with a Little Book 3  and followed up with the final pour from a 2015-3 (The Center Cut).  I must be channeling  Booker this evening.  I many have to close out the night with some Big Man; Small Batch!

Visiting/revisiting MM 101  this evening. :o My first pour of this was after “experimenting” with a vatting or two. Good, but.... Tonight on a clean palate, WOW!  I have one open, and one in the bunker. I’m thinking I’m probably going to have to grab at least a couple more.

MM was my gateway bourbon. It will always have a spot in my bunker and my heart. If the MM 101 holds up as is, it could very well reside on my open shelf next to Weller SRBT and my BIB’s as one of my regular go to bourbons.

Biba! Joe
