Mrs. Clueby and I had an overnight road trip for a gig I was playing last night so we did a bit of exploring on the way home. Overpaid a bit I'm sure for the 13C but worth a gamble. I really like the regular Penelope barrel strength so hoping the age stated version is even better for $5 more. We also stopped and had our fudge packed.

Sorry,  I hope the price was reasonable and you didn't get reamed. 😀

I think it was 59.99 and then I saw it later at a second store for 45.99.

But I see what you did there. 🤣

So. I have mentioned SFTB and Gulmohars in St Maarten before. I have always been able to get cases of the stuff there at $175/bottle. They have the most SFTB I've ever seen, by far. I bought 8 cases in one trip and they didn't blink an eye. I emailed BT and they confirmed "it's real & legit". Ditto the online whiskey detective guy. I've shared/sold at cost/traded scores of bottles from there. All real, all delicious.

Why do they have so much?

My theory: The very slightly flawed bottles go there. The wax is sometimes a little weird in terms of "look". It's actually caused trades to fall apart. I've seen a few labels that are a bit "off". Torn & whatnot. Perhaps Gulmohars gets the imperfect bottles?

And yet...that would mean a large variety of bottles. But the batches they get are huge, cases and cases of the same barrel. I have all 8 letters to one barrel, for perspective on the loads they get. That somewhat contradicts my "flawed" theory, though the wax is consistently a bit off when compared to the bottles I buy elsewhere.

Dunno.

Worth a trip there? No, not just for this. The difference between secondary (hovering around $265, more for higher proofs) and $175 per bottle (taxes included) isn't worth a trip unless you are buying a pretty darned large quantity. The latter is far more easily done via cruise ship than airplane - fewer luggage/weight restrictions.

Now. If I see a cheap cruise out of the port 5 minutes from my apartment that happens to stop in St Maarten? Well, maybe. I like cheap, 5-star cruises because I get taken care of food wise, and the gyms are nice. I ignore the shows, etc. I also get off on few islands as I already live on one. Beaches, drinks, drunken tourists, semi-naked people (most of whom really should not be), got plenty of that 3 minutes from the apartment. But I get an awful lot done on those cruises ("Deep Work") and enjoy time with the Wifey, or just reading. Coming back with "x" number of cases of Ingestible Wampum? Bonus!

Anyhow, I'd be curious to understand why they get so much.

If you do see them, tell them the tax lawyer from Puerto Rico says "hi". They'll definitely remember me!

YES! I am extremely grateful for my very, very First World Problems!

A discussion for another, alcohol-soaked day....how one shows such gratitude in a meaningful way.

Cheers!

I chased her for years. She finally looked my way and the $189 slipped from my wallet as easily as falling off of a log in a muddy waters, loaded with alligators, LA swamp. (glad to have/buyers remorse kind'a thing)

To make matters worse, the JEP Decanter was replenished, so I did the same. 2.4 less proof points than my last one, but $10 cheaper, also.

P.S. Luv Ya, Nancy...

@bayouredd Well done Sir! And WOW, I'm absolutely thrilled to see that you also got it at a decent price. It really irks me when I see it jacked up to unconscionable prices. What batch did you manage to land?

Why they get so much -

This is just a hypothesis, but when Weller demand really took off, the people that been buying for a long time continued to receive it.  So I imagine there is some long standing arrangement with the SFTB.  There's also the issue, it's a brand (with rare exception recently) not sold in the U.S.  I can also see the imperfect labels being culled and sent to some markets not others.

A somewhat unplanned purchase yesterday after work.  I say "unplanned" because I've been attempting to take a break from acquiring more bottles due to lack of space.  Thus far, it doesn't seem to be working.  Just another 1st world problem I suppose.  All good. 🙂

Two of these bottles are new to me: the Cooper's Craft 100 and the ShortBarrel Toasted.

The Cooper's Craft 100 has been on my radar thanks to some positive mentions here on SB.  I had a small pour last night and was quite impressed.  At $28 it's excellent value for money.

I have not yet sampled the ShortBarrel toasted.  It's something I've noticed on the shelf of several local stores, and I have been curious to try it.  I saw it at $55, which is the best local price I've seen, so I decided to take a chance.  I expect it will be good.  Just not sure if it's gonna be $55 good.

It's been a while since I purchased WT101, but it never disappoints.  Neat, on the rocks, in a cocktail... WT101 is a "Swiss Army knife" bourbon that puts a smile on my face and does it all at a bargain 🥳

As for the JDSiBBP Rye, it's another backup bottle.  I love this rye so much I am now buying a bottle or two whenever I see a new batch on the shelves.  It's very reasonably priced in my area (between $63 and $69 at most locations), but I'm starting to see it marked up quite a bit at some online retailers and reading some mumbo jumbo that it may be heading for allocated status.  It's probably a bunch of nothing.  Nevertheless, I'm happy to stock up as a precautionary measure.

Dude, your brain is on whiskey.  There is no such thing as an unplanned purchase in your situation.  You will just buy and buy more.  😀

Makes sense. That's why France gets so much W12, Japan WT12, etc.

You may have seen here that Cooper's Craft appears to be discontinued.

My local shop emailed me about a 4R OESF. I only had one left so I snagged it even though it was priced fairly high. (This place never uses predatory pricing, so I'm guessing $100 and over is the standard now).

I picked up a bottle and it was sold out in a couple of hours.

If I understand correctly, the history of WT101/12 and WT101/8 in Japan is more a result of the Japanese market demanding an age-stated whiskey.  Evidently WT marketing determined that Japan would  reject NAS back when WT removed age statements in the US market.

I read a comment about that ^, but I've seen no evidence in my area that Cooper's Craft 100 is going bye-bye.  However, if it does, I'll survive.  There's plenty of good budget bourbon out there.

Evidently, OGD 114 is being discontinued as well (yeah, right 🍿😄).

Now if you told me Knob Creek 12 was being discontinued (and that info was reliable), I might be concerned.  Luckily, that's not the case.  🥂Cheers!

He's messing with you, nice-like. He does that a lot. Nuance does not always show itself well on the internet.

For example, he has implied to me, on more than one occasion, that Buckeyes are something other than Perfect Beings Gifted From God to Others. Which everyone knows to be complete BS, we Buckeyes are in fact Perfect Beings Gifted From God to others. But he meant well, so I, in my magnanimous Buckeye Perfection, accepted his lack of understanding because it's meant in a friendly "bro on bro" fashion.

Yours is another friendly bro-on-bro comment from <sigh> the imperfect Hoosier and (in my Perfect Buckeye Mind) the Original Cheap Bastard.

It's all good.
