I'm following up the VW Rye with some George Dickel SBR drinking.gif

I've been going through my bottles trying to update my database and just for fun I devided them into two groups the"no-longer-in-production/extremely-limited-availability" and the "readily-available" groups...I then decided that it was beginning to look more like a museum for retired bottles and was time to make myself open some of the first group. woohoo.gif

Tonight I'm revisiting an oddball yet old friend Boswell's. I'm almost out of it and am still looking for a second reason to go to Lebanon, MO to see if Independent Stave's gift shop still carries it. I done bought out all of St Louis that I've found.

Last night, it was a recent bottling of Knob Creek. I used to love KC, but this bottle has been off and on, for me. Last night, it was way off. puke.gif

Last night it was ETL for me. What an amazing bourbon! The problem is that everytime I find a better tasting bourbon, it pushes down my opinion of others I have tasted. So maybe I should never drink the very top bourbon's that are not available in my state less they negatively influence my opinion of the good bourbon's I can get here in NC at a reasonable price?

Tonight its EWSB 1995 and its growing on me, although I'm noticing an odd after taste, almost like radish, but very faint.

I just got back all the bottles that I left in Lexington after the KBF and there was an open bottle in there, so tonight I'm trying Origine 8yo 80 proof(an Albertsons house label). I'm pleasantly surprised, its not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. It's actually quite smooth with a good vanilla/oak balance. It's still not worth what they charge for it(about the same as KC) but I don't feel nearly as ripped off as I thought I would be...I bought this after there was some talk about it before the KBF and thought I'd bring in a bottle for fun, though I don't think many people thought it worth trying as there is still 90% of the bottle remaining.

Tonight I bought a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old that I have been wanting for a long time so right now I am drinking Old Charter 12! Mighty good bourbon. I might give the Laphroaig a little attention later.

Welcome to the forum! As a bonus to being a first time poster you win....two more fingers of WR! Assuming that you are in training per your username, thank you in advance for doing what is so important and yet would probably increase my cost of getting my shorts laundered if I tried it.

I'm revisiting my AAA 10 for the first time since I got over my flu. It's a lot tastier when I'm not sick!

Earlier, I had started out with Ardbeg 10yo and then a pour of Bernheim Wheat... and got to sit by the fire and watch the Chicago Bears demolish Atlanta while I had the Bernheim. smile.gif

It’s a nice excuse to get away from all the busy distractions that come this time of year. I am sitting in front of two glasses, just relaxing; don’t get to do that too often. One glass of Elijah Craig 12-year-old, and the other is Basil Hayden. My technical evaluation is...yum. I think, though I enjoy them both, I like the EC 12 a little more. Seems to have a little more flavor...stays with me a little longer. So many more to try….

Last night I started off with some Pikesville rye that I haven't had in a while and then moved on to some Eagle Rare 101. The Pikesville was so-so, but the ER101 was great.

Old Fitz BIB, distilled KY-16, bottled KY-24. Man alive is this good. Flowers, fruit, sweet but not cloying. Really, really drinkable neat.

About two ounces of WT 101 with just a light dribble of Ezra B 15 y/o.

I thought this mini-vatting might take a little of the edge off the WT, resulting in something more like the longer-aged WT bottlings. Boy, was I wrong!

The wood from the Ezra B completely dominates. I wouldn't have thought it possible.

The next time I try this combo, I'll try adding the Ezra B drop by drop to see whether there is a point where both the WT and the Ezra B are identifiable.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

As I read this string I am reminded that it will change very soon. I am speaking of all of the fine bottles that will be given and received throughout the Holiday. I know that I have let the people who are responsible for my "gifts" that some bottles would look pretty good under my tree.

Until then I am still sipping from my stash,

Maker's, EW SB 95, WT RR and Rock Hill Farms.

Last night I finished off the last of a Evan William's 12 yo Red Label. Just a couple of sips. Then I opened another of the same. The first was sweeter I think. Not a big difference though. Later I had a pour of Blanton's Gold. I have been drinking some pretty in your face bourbons lately, so when I had some of this Blanton's it had seemed pretty tame, even bland, but not last night, rich sweet, complex, though not overpowering. Then I went to bed early.

Sometimes I find if you add more of the "offending" element it all comes back into balance. It's an strange thing, but the right combination is sometimes counter-intuitive.

I'd add the Ezra Brooks 15 (or the WT 101 for that matter, which can be pretty woody) to a non-woody bourbon, say, a Maker's Mark, or Ancient Age, or Early Times. Maybe, too, to an Old Forester.

Opposites attract (sometimes smile.gif).

This evening I started off with a Gillmanizing project: I mixed Origine 8yo with OGD 114(2:1). For whatever reason the blend quite reminded me of FRSB.

Now I'm drinking Georgia Moon 80. I poured a little in a glass while I was filling an old flask to clean it(the only good use I've ever found for the stuff). I was surprised, I think that once you get past the nose(it smells horrible), it's actually as good as(or even slightly better than) WRFG. I don't mean this to be more FG bashing, but more as redemption for the corn whiskey that is commonly thought of as a joke. I'm now tempted to go get a bottle of the 100 proof version to try(but it doesn't come in the cool mason jar).

Last night I finished off that bottle of Old Overholt. It's funny, it had been a long time since I had some neat in a tasting glass, and it was really rather tasty. yum.gif I know I went through all this a week or so ago on this thread, but I was once again impressed with the quality of what is sold as a bottom-shelf bargain whiskey. I'm going to have to replace that bottle.

Last night I finished the bottle of EWSB 1995 I had been working on. For a change of pace I took a pour from a bottle of Jamesons Irish my wife had gotten to make some Irish Cream for the holidays. It was a nice departure sweeter but not as robust as most bourbons. Looking for a little more kick I tapped into a new bottle WT KS. Its been a while since I had any KS, but its like welcoming home an old friend. I always seem to go back to the WT family.

New Sazerac Rye. This one makes me sad. Not near enough made to be able to enjoy this fabulous drink. In the near future, this will be all gone. Sad.
