Virus_Of_Life
I opened my Hirsch Gold Wax a while back and had the second dip into it tonight, not impressed. Not sure what it is, maybe slight cork taint maybe slight metallic taste that people talk about. All I know is it just isn't up to Blue Wax standards, not even close. I guess the Vegas atmosphere could enhance the enjoyment factor...So after that I had to correct things, a pour of Thomas Handy seemed appropos. I love the smell of straight uncut unfiltered rye... in the morning... smells like... like Breakfast!
Virus_Of_Life
Hhhmmm two posts back to back, is this the sign of a problem? Had something, then something else and then this: just a splash of Willett Rye with about 3 or 4 times as much EWSB '97. Wow, pretty nice! These two seem to compliment each other really well for some reason, I get a strawberry note in the nose and a little on the palate as well that I have never experienced. ThomasH
While watching the Ohio State/Georgetown game last night, I had a trio from BT: Buffalo Trace, ETL and Hancocks Reserve. All are excellent but the Hancocks Reserve is my favorite of the 3. Thomas
ILLfarmboy
A Saz Jr. Old Fashioned. I added one tsp of sugar and one tsp water to the bottom of the tumbler three drops of angosturra bitters, muddled that and added a stemless cherry crushing it only slightly and poured in two and a quarter ounces of Saz Jr. Then I added an orange wedge, pinched a small bit of the orange peal above the glass added the ice, gave it a stir and rubbed the rim of the glass with said peal.Quite tasty! I think I'm ready to be on the other side of the bar.
TBoner
A very small pour of my precious Dalmore 21.Don't know that anything will follow it, though I'm yearning to take the pipe out to the deck for a while. If I do, then it'll be OGD 114 or ER 101.

larocka
I discovered straightbourbon.com a few months ago when I did a google search for bourbon tastings and was amazed to find so many people who are so into bourbon. At the time I only had bottles of JBW and Maker's Mark. Thanks to you folks I now have bottles of PVW 20, 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, Woodford Reserve, WT 101, and Knob Creek in addition. Of course, I am looking to add more. This is my first post and I thoroughly enjoy the site and the commentary. Anyway, tonight my mother was over my house for a dinner to celebrate her 69th birthday. We barbequed NY steaks and had baked potatoes and asparagus as well.Since this is a special occasion, the PVW 20 made its way out of the cabinet and my mother, my wife, and I all enjoyed a pour. I enjoyed it with a cigar and I am now finishing the night with a little Knob Creek.Life is good.

HighTower
Was it a special occaision? Is Monday night not occasion enough?? We went to a tasting event for Wild Turkey 86.8, Woodford Reserve and Maker's Mark. They also covered the mint Julep YUM! and also the old fashioned. The rest of those bourbons just happened, some at Cam's home bar, some at the bar we went to and some I took with me!:skep: There was a great bunch of people there, in a great atmosphere. Anyway it was a great night. How you feeling Cam? I'm sure glad I didn't have to start work at 6am:lol: Scott
tango-papa
Tonight it's Wild Turkey Rye - a green labeled bottle from the mid 90's.Didn't really care for this the first time I had it, but tonight I'm liking it somewhat - really long and spicy finish. doubleblank
Reading Tim's notes on the Chardonnay experimental barrels brought back memories of tasting one of those in the lab a year ago. Hope to taste it outside the BT lab someday. Anyway, I decided to pour a BTEC Fire Pot bourbon from the first release. Excellent stuff.......perfectly balanced wood, caramel, sweetness.....my personal favorite from the first release.Note to Tim........save me some.....how about Chicago?Randy
Gillman
Yes, me too please. I too liked the Firepot, clearly the best of the original BTEC. This was against expectation in that I thought it might be over-oaked but it wasn't, the rich wood gums seemed to dominate. Speaking of rich whiskey, tonight after work with my friend G. Hodder I sampled his WT 101 8 years old (the one sold in U.S. duty-free), his Kentucky Spirit, and his (formerly my) Tribute. I had given the Tribute to him to constitute a WT hat trick. I found, first, each whiskey certainly resembled the others. They are from the same family but differed in intensity of taste and balance. My favourite was the WT 101. It had the best calibration and overall taste. I would rank second the KS, and third the Tribute. The latter two seemed a bit coarse next to the 101 export. Of course this is all relative. The best dram of the night was (you know it's coming) a mingling of the three. I used the 101 as the base and added the other two to it, say 2:1:1 (or maybe slightly less of the latter two). The result was sensational in that the fine flavor and balance of the 101 was preserved but the other two gave it length and more body. This is the ultimate WT dram for me, short of Rare Breed at its best, but that is really a different drink anyway. Gary
wskybnt
Trying RittenHouse BIB for the first time tonight. This is good stuff. I have only seen it in one place around here, and finally picked it up today. Wish I would have sooner. As far as Rye's go, this one is up there for me. Especially considering the price.... However, Bardstown and the Sampler is hard on the heels...

CrispyCritter
A good pour of '06 Stagg to start out. This time around, it seems to have a big hit of citrus among the chocolate/caramel notes. Mmmmmmm.

MikeDS
Being spring in Chicagoland (sort of) I have lots of work around the yard to do. Gathering sticks, picking up garbage (corner lot), and removal of what seems like thousands of dog poops deposited during winter. I've been drinking the cheaper bourbons since I seem to be going through them kinda quick...Cheaper in cost that is, not deliciousness. I've recently waxed a bottle of WT 101, finished a 350ml of Beam Black, downed a bottle of Fighting Cock, am now nearing the end of an Ancient Ancient Age 10 yr old. Next up is Elijah Craig 12. Never had the stuff but look forward to it!
