Four Roses Single Barrel, the guys at work today laughed when I told them I did a one day road trip to KY to "just get some whiskey."

With each smell and taste, it is me who is having the last laugh.

I'm taking down two fine bourbons this evening in a marathon twin billin' killin'!

First, I plan to slay the whimsical Mr. Sazerac who, I've been told, is lightening quick and hard to find, with fast hands and a rye sense of humor! My plan is to fill him full of tea and scrumpets while playing classical music ringside. Once mellowed, I'll drive him relentlessly into the canvas and strip him of his label.

Once down for the count, my next opponent will swiftly step into the ring. This legend is known throughout the Continental U.S - and even New Mexico! - as the Bourbon Bomber, the Whiskey Wacko and, for just a very short while, the Bourbon That Likes To Put Up A Fight And No One Knows Why, Counceling Is Needed! Yes, that's right, entering the ring will be none other than the Bourbon Heavyweight Champeen of the world, George T. Stagg!

As some of you may or may not know, I was taken to the canvas three times by Mr. Stagg, the last time we fought, resulting in a TKO. He packs a wallop and there's no quit in this tireless bourbon. Surely, I have my work cut out for me, but I've got a little something up my sleeve this bout. Let's just say, my hands will be a lot heavier this go around (think box-o-rocks and anvil!). First, I will strip Jorge of his will with my left hook and then his spirit with my right...to the nuts - hey, I didn't say I wasn't above cheating. Besides, do you have a better plan? Didn't think so! Georgie will never know what him. There will not be any getting up for the Bourbon That Likes To Put Up A Fight And No One Knows Why, Counceling Is Needed!

Wish me luck. All hell will break lose this evening at 10PM EDT on ESPN 4.

Nice work Mark! What was the outcome of the match? Sounds like you have UFC on the TV and the Living room couch.

I'm expecting a side by side tag team event from you by Thursday when the little brother of the 07 GTS shows up. Not sure if the punch to the junk will take down both 06 GTS and 07 GTS in the same fight, but you'll have to let us know.

( I think George W. said it best when he said "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." — ) Gotta love that guy, he's like Chevy Trucks "Like a Rock...only Dumber".

I was 1-for-2 last night, Tony. The gameplan employeed for Mr. Sazerac worked like a charm. But, instead of his eating "tea and scrumpets," I threw them at him. This tactic may have been illegal but I'm one of the old school guys who doesn't mind cheating to pull of a win.

Regarding Mr. Stagg, well you know the old saying analysts would use regarding Michael Jordan, "You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him." Well, that phrase certainly applies to George. Dang, he was relentless last night. He just kept coming at me, fists a-blazing. I fought the good fight (well, the illegal one anyway) but the beast must have brass balls or something (seriously, how many anvil shots can you take to the nuts?) because he didn't appear phased. Again, I lost by TKO. It was a bit embarrassing. This morning, I'm reviewing the tape to see where things went wrong. And tomorrow night I will do battle again.

Last night had a pour of my getting-dangerously-low Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit. I'll hate to see that bottle empty.

Christian Brothers neat. It's the only brandy I have in the house. Plain but pleasantly fruity.

Have you tried a Spanish brandy like Osbourne? Brandy, but with a whole different dimension.

Somewhat off topic:

Good to see from your avatar that the moustache is back!

oh don't you advanced tasters make fun of me...

no really, i had to run out and get some cat litter ( ) and went to another store that had a liquor store in it (a cool, PA thing!)...they had too small of a selection and nothing dusty.....so around the corner i stopped into a store i rarely visit (Newtown Square for those in the area)...i was HOPING to find the OG114 since i hear rumours of it fading away......but mainly because it IS on sale here in PA for less than $20!

but none to be found.

and then, there it was, enticing only because it was $4, yes $4 off the regular price...Gentleman Jack .375ml for under $10...so i went ahead and got it.

ok, at 80 proof, this is easy stuff or should be...and yes, it is.

but for low proof, ALOT of taste! it's beating that similar proof OBushmills to pieces! and of course, a totally different animal, manimal, gentlemanimal...!

first big sensation is butter or butteriness...would this simply be regular JD watered down (with good water!) and a pad of Amish butter???? nah...but it's really nice, almost BUTTERSCOTCHy....and, yes, i am sensing sauteed plantains or fried green bananas....

this is pretty much liquid stealth candy.

nice. very nice. when i am in the mood for something that isn't too complex at all, but interesting enough. and i know it won't bite me.

impressive! at least in the sense that i was expecting something TOTALLY different. maybe that's the key to this first pour.

i still prefer a real love bite in my whiskey and bourbons, but this is different enough. and now i am interested in the barrel select version of JD....

cheers

andy

p.s.

now is this just older regular JD? or filtered more JD? or both? aside from the maple carcinogenic filter used, what is the mashbill here?

Mark, I like your nickname for GTS: "The Bourbon That Likes To Put Up A Fight And No One Knows Why." Great read, and very funny! I can relate to your ambition. Well done.

See my thread on Crown Royal Cask No. 16.

I also got down some own-blend rum and single barrel Buffalo Trace.

To accompany: peanut butter on sourdough toasted lightly with a banana on top.

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. :)

Peanut butter and bananas belong on Graham Crackers, everybody knows this!

And to stay on topic, Rebel Yell poured and dumped(sometimes I drink it, sometimes it gets dumped) to be replaced with AAA, much better.

(I'm shiny-new here, so y'all be gentle, okay? )

Last night I had 2+ fingers of Elijah Craig 12. Based on what I've been reading here on sb.com, this is one of the better choices from the rather limited selection available here in Alabama.

Speaking of fingers ... and if this is not an inappropriate place to ask ... what would be considered a typically sized sampling among the various members here? I've been browsing a lot of the older threads, but don't think I've seen that mentioned. Although I didn't measure it, I'd guess that last night's drink was somewhere between three and four ounces.

Good question, I have always felt that a standard drink is really (hard liquor) 1.5 ounces, which will sound small to some here, but ad campaigns which vaunt that so much liquor equals so much wine equals so much beer usually use that amount, i.e., 1.5 oz. liquor - never mind proof for a moment - to equal 5 ounces of 12% abv wine which equals 12 oz. of 5% beer, rendering that is .6 oz. pure alcohol in each case.

So, 3-4 ounces bourbon is 2 drinks or more by this standard.

1.5 tablespoons for me - half what Gillman consumes. I use a little cordial glass when drinking straight, and an all-purpose 4oz tulip when drinking on the rocks.

No no, 1.5 oz. is the accepted standard measure of one drink in North America, that is what I said (or meant).

I may consume more or less on a specific occasion.
