Had some more of the OGD BIB/Nog concoction this afternoon in round 1. About to get started with round 2.....been a long day and the night likely to be longer. That's OK though, more time to enjoy the fruits of Kentucky! First things first will be some VWFR from an older cache of bottles I have never opened. Next on the list will be WT12.....many thanks to a very special sb.com friend for that one! After that, well, I'll have to get back to you later.

It's been all turkey so far. RB, RR90 and KS. Gonna follow that up with a Sazerac Cocktail with some real absinthe (finally) and Handy.

Howdy,

Boy, guys like ACDetroit and Gillman humble me when it comes to my taste in Bourbon! Lately it's been KC and JBB, but I decided to put JBW in my Diet Coke last night and it was like shaking hands with an old friend.

Laugh if you want (I know JBW isn't held in high regard by many here), but I started with JBW and it was familiar, good-and easy on the wallet.

All bourbon is good, and JB White is a big seller so it is doing something right. I also believe its taste has been calibrated to go very well with Coke. I believe this too now of Jack Daniels, currently I enjoy it (the single barrel) with Coke and sometimes on its own with bitters. The only rule is, stick with what you like. Some will (perhaps most by virtue of spending time on this specialist site) be interested to try a range of whiskeys. One thing too I would say is it takes time to develop a palate for the range of bourbon styles. For years I stuck largely with Makers and Old Fitzgerald until I "got" the taste for rye-recipe bourbons and straight rye (I mean taking it neat). But had I not pursued that direction, I'd still be a bourbonite. I was one, actually, years before joining SB except now I am able to share ideas and learn lots from like-minded enthusiasts.

I started Christmas morning with a little Christmas Turkey...WT12 that is. Couldn't steer away from it for too long but also indulged in a couple of Gentleman Jacks.I know they changed the bottle and all, but this stuff tatses different to me.....Scott

I had such a good xmas this year. For starters, my cousin came out. I seldom see her and her fiance but when I do it's always a damn good time! Anyway, I drank some VWFRR (2007), PVW23 (sb.com barrel #2), VOF:BIB (1958), and lots of W.L. Weller special Reserve (which I also used to make the egg nog).

The egg nog was a hit, everyone that tried it loved it. I made it as per CrashRiley's recipe with some W.L. Weller Special Reserve and some E&J VSOP Brandy. It was a merry xmas and I hope everyone else had the same!

A repeat of last night, hard to veer away from this magnitude of bourbon: First, VWFR Lot B; Second, WT12. I cannot stress enough how much I revere this pair. When the holidays and other special occasions roll around, they are always in the mix for consideration. I only wish there were more in my reserves! Neither are now available since this particular Lot B is a dusty bottle found several years ago.

Well chosen, both for timely consumption, and historical delineation. Twelve-year-old whiskeys would once have been considered 'ultra-aged', but are much more common in the current era. It remains to be seen if such aging continues to be available in quantity now that bourbon and American whiskey have passed a 'threshhold', of sorts -- no longer a regional taste, but acknowledged universally for its consistent quality. Demand makes supply more difficult.

You note a very fine pairing of both rye- and wheat-based bourbon. I believe it is not possible to consider oneself a 'connoissieur' of bourbon without appreciating both -- AND the differences between the two. Fineness is available in both.

An aside: it is one of the reasons I continue to be drawn to StraightBourbon.com that members here do not hoard their whiskey, but drink it. Mere collectors offend me. Whiskey is a comestible. Mere reason tells me that it is impossible to appreciate it without consuming it. 'Collectors' are akin to the money-changers in the Temple, in my opinion. I certainly save some bourbons/whiskeys for future enjoyment. But when I don't want to taste them, I'll move on to something else.

Thanks for your post. Ironically I just got through posting in another forum about this rare form of bourbon related OCD which seems to be compelling me to hoard bourbon rather than drink it. Posts like yours remind me that I just need to crack these soldiers open and enjoy them. I thought I was done for the night - but in honor of the occasion (and because I don't want to go to bed comparing myself to the money changers) I just went and cracked my first (and only) Hirsch16. If it's good my OCD will probably compel me to start searching for another bottle tomorrow. But I guess I'll take it one day at a time.

Well I had an off bottle of Templeton Rye so to make it better I added 3 peppermint candies to the bottle. Good tip it makes the whiskey quite drinkable. After that a pour of Crown Royle as it was the only Whiskey that my sister inlaw had. I must say it is a very one dimesional drink compared to what I am used to. Merry Christmas all

I agree! Any bourbon tastes best with friends.

I've got a small (by the standard set by some here) bunker of about twenty bottles. All designed for drinking when the occasion arises ... Wait, I feel one rising right now.

I did have a dram last night of my '65 Old Fitz BIB. I also passed around to other family members some Binny's Weller 12 year, early '70's Old Forrester BIB, and a mid 80's Old Charter 7 year.

This afternoon, while my wife is fighting the post-Christmas sales, I'm sampling some of my presents. (strictly for QA purposes). A little Lot B, some WTAS, Ezra 12, soon to be followed by some Hirsch Rye 21.

Estrella draft lager, brewed in Barcelona, with a tot of Solera Gran Reserva Cardenal Mendoza brandy next to it.

The Estrella ("Star") is worthy of its name, evidently all-malt with a complex hop character. It is similar to but somewhat lighter than (Czech) Pilsener Urquel, sampled on draft too recently in town and very good (although the freshest bottles and cans imported to America are essentially the same). Still, the Estrella, made by Damm brewers of Spain, has a distinctive house character.

Funny thing (or not): the first taste (oldish and rich) of the brandy reminded me of a Prohibition-era bourbon someone had brought to Gazebo. The rich sweet oakiness was the common link.

First, I started with The Balvenie 17 yr old Sherrie Cask Scotch, then to Four Roses SB, but then back to the Special Selection Pappy 15. This Pappy may be the best I've ever had! Now, for another episode of The Sopranos (watching it on DVD for the first time and on season 4). Happy New Year to all!

Currently, Rittenhouse BIB, after earlier pours of Weller 107, Domaine Le Basque 1982 Armagnac, and Fundador Jerez brandy.

EC 12. This my first bottle in a couple of years. This bottle seems even better than the last. Love its unique minty finish. Great stuff, great value.
