Doin' it in 15 below zero windchill today.

So you know I'm pulling out my Eagle Rare 101 10yo to warm up.

This is the New Orleans bottle I mentioned earlier.

I have heard the word "chewy" to describe a taste before and with this bottle I can understand the term. It's a bold mouthful, the opening is a chewy carmel.

Also like before I get a char taste that is very similar to GTStagg and a deep cooked praline flavor.

So I'll refer to this bottle as my "Baby Stagg".

Ok, so I am now doing a follow up with Wild Turkey 101 8 Year Old.

Damn this is criminal that Wild Turkey sends this stuff over-seas and we get the left overs.

Leave us alone Oscar, you guys get Tribute and Russells Reserve Rye, not to mention Kentucky Spirit!!

To keep on topic, last night I had some Elmer T Lee and some WT American Spirit. I slept like a baby....probably a snoring baby

Looking forward to the mix report as these are a few of my favorite things,(soory for the sound of music quote) Mark

Mark, the mix was excellent. I highly recommend it.

The Weller Antique is subtle in flavor while the '07 WLW has quite a bit of bit. The PVW 20 is one-dimensional and sweet, so they all seem to compliment one another quite well.

Tonight I'm working over two different bottles.

First is one of my favorite full throtle bourbons...1792 Ridgemont Reserve. The extra age on this product makes for an excellent ballance of oak and grain flavor.

Second is one that I just opened the other day....Ancient Age Bib. Hard to find in most places for some reason. It is everything you would expect from a Bib bourbon. Plenty of alcohol ballanced with some corn and a slighty nutty finish. If this is four year old bourbon I would be surprised. It is not anywhere near the barrel style of the 1792, though I would say it is aged to full maturity. Very good pour. I would buy this as a house brand if it were available here in Texas.

After re-tasting Knob Creek which was my vb #93 selection (snagged by the savvy Bobby Cox), I've got out now two other bourbons to compare it to.

I have the three before me, the base of a rocks glass covered with a small amount of each.

The other two are EC 12 and Rare Breed.

The EC 12 has the most flavor and is soft and brandy-like. Although I didn't notice it before, in comparison to these other two, the EC 12 has some slight oily taste and texture, which I like. It is a kind of HH signature I think. I have some 1970's HH gold and black label 86 proof which is very oily: the current HH-branded bourbons are much less so but the taste is still there. When in balance, it adds a lot to the whiskey and trumps the Knob Creek I think much as I like it, more stylish and impactful.

The Rare Breed is a little closed by comparison. It is closer to Knob Creek than EC 12 but not as good as Knob Creek I'd say, maybe the younger whiskeys in RB show it to lesser advantage. It's got a perfumy character I like though.

Of course on the rocks or with water I might have a different view, but I drink them neat.

All excellent products although they always taste better to me in Bardstown (all bourbons do). And I think I've figured out why. That cured ham smell that permeates the town often, which is the sum total of fermenting mash, cooking in the stills, the aging bourbon on the ricks and shucks just all that bourbon atmosphere in that town, gets into the whiskey as you drink it and just makes it better.

Alright one more. The 1985 VWFRR (100 proof un-chill-filtered).

It has a concentrated, medicinal taste. Some of that "old roses" that I like too. There is something old-fashioned and authentic about this, I am sure well-aged whiskeys 100 years ago were similar.

It has a good nose too, more so than the others, reflecting probably the age.

While waiting for the dog to do his thing outside, the OF Birthday bottle caught my eye, so I had a little "neat" (not up). Pretty smooth. G'night, all.

WTRR 101 x 2 - Screw proof reductions. AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH! I hate allcaps and exclamation points. But I want you to know I actually screamed when I tasted this tonight - in pain and anguish over the ruination of a truly great bourbon (the RR90 is good, but IMO it don't touch this). I can dilute the whiskey myself if I want, thanks.

Orval bottled nearly a year ago - Brettanomyces character (horseblanket, leather, and cherries in this case) very apparent. Delicious.

Good night.

I hear ya'

I'm drinkin' some ORVW 10 year 107 tonight. A wheater, but it has more flavor than the RR rye I was drinking a few nights ago. Its a shame, weak birds with muted flavors.

I just had some AAA 10yo, which was as good as always, followed by some WTRR 90, which I am a fan of.

The mother-in-law is here tonight, and she is a bourbon drinker, so I may have a WTAS with her. She hasn't tried it yet...she's in for a treat! Otherwise I may have some Pappy 20, I'm in the mood!

Long damn day that started Monday... so I decided to follow the glass of Pappy 23 with some 15 for the first time as well for scientific purposes

:slappin:

Both are very unique... I love them both for different reasons... I think the 15 may have a little more oak to it.. which is surprising...

The 23 started off with more oak on the nose, but damn if that stuff did not blossomed into some amazing bourbon...

I had read where many had found the 23 to strong with oak, but this was so complex that the oak was just one of the pleasant properties that it had to offer.

MmmMmMMm now for a glass of Guinness :drink:

Closing out the last day of January on a cold rainy & icy night here with some good warm company: ERSB, Saz Jr, RR Rye and VWFRR.....makes you forget how miserable it is outside my den window.

Well,

I'm closing in on the end of a long week spent writing fellowship applications for next year. Hunting for funding -- the annual ritual of the graduate student that demands a unique combination of begging and bragging I've termed "bragegging."

At any rate, I still have one more application to go so I'm limiting myself to the last little bit of a bottle of IW Harper from the Bourbon Heritage Collection. It's only 80 proof, so it shouldn't impede my productivity too much.

Tonight 18yr Elijha Craig. An extemely dry bourbon, but if you like that (and I do) this pour may be for you. Does a great job warming you up on a cold day...

I just might have to try that one. I have to admit...I mix my bourbons all the time, but have not thought of that one yet. Thanks!

Eagle Rare S1B 10 yr. 90. I liked the 101, but this is even better. This is my favorite BT product to date.
