Where else would Harper be from?:searching:

Is it 80 or 86 proof?

It's 80. Wasn't sure if Harper was picked up by Bt or what after the demise of UD, that's why I mentioned it. Sorry if that was too much of a newbie move. I don't have much of a ref library on bourbon at hand.

Diageo is still the owner of the IWH label, even though they do not produce bourbon any longer. It is sold overseas for the most part.

This evening I took delivery of a quad pack of the FR 120th (one is for my boss) and a bottle of Cowdery's favorite rye...Templeton.

Today I picked up a Wild Turkey Rare Breed and a Bulleit.

Awaiting me on the door step when I got home was a package with a Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit "pewter top" from 2001.

Oscar, you should try to find one of the original issue pewter tops, with the original label and writing in grey. I believe by 2001 they had changed to the turkey looking ahead instead of at you label and changed the writing on the bottle to a color that showed up better than the grey did. Excuse my rambling just trying to say I think the very first stuff done in 95?/96/97 is some of the best Turkey, of not bourbon in general, I've tasted.

I found this info some time ago that I put in my bourbon notes document, it may help some appreciate and shed some light on what we mean when we say pewter top and the original bottling. I cannot recall who originated it, so I can't give credit other than to say it wasn't me:

"Kentucky Spirit Variations:

1- The first is what I call the 'original' KS bottle. It had a pewter stopper, dark and light grey neckband with silver writing, and a silver and black label in the center of the bottle similar to today's just different colored. Also, it had very dark grey writing under the sticker saying Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon 750ml. This writing is very hard to read due to it being such a dark grey.

2- The second variation I have seen is the same exact bottle as mentioned above except the grey writing on the bottom was replaced with the light tan colored writing we are familiar with today. I would guess that they made a bottle change so the writing could be more easily read but they kept using up their old stock of labels, or the label change took a bit longer than it did to implement the new bottles.

3- The third bottle used the bottles see know today with the light colored writing on the bottom but had label changes such as a brown neckband with light colored writing and a center label that is more easily viewed in brown and white colors.

4- Finally, the fourth bottle is the exact same as above, but with a wooden stopper replacing the beautiful pewter stoppers."

Fascinating stuff, Virus. I recall seeing a pewter top bottle not long ago in a store not far from me. Going to have to head over there later today and see if it's still there. I didn't realize it signified a (possibly) older bottling. Thanks for the info.

Excuse my rambling

Hey Christian, glad you chimed in and please ramble on.

I've got 5 WTKS bunkered and I have been thru 4.

One of these had the light wood top, I got it last Autumn, bottled in '07 and I was let down with it to put it mildly, the other 3 I liked a lot.

They were all dark wood top.

Last Winter I had a few pours of a WTKS pewter top from the mid '90's (over at Tony's) the one you described as "1".

My reaction was that not only was it the best Turkey I've had but probably the best bourbon I've ever had.

Since then I have picked up every dark wood top and pewter top that I see.

I have 2 pewter tops, one with the grey neck band and the turkey looking at you (4-13-00) and the other looking to the left (3-21-01).

The other 3 are interesting because one is so much darker than any WTKS I have ever seen.

Dark wood top (8-22-03), and it looks almost like maple syrup. I think that is going to be a real treat.

Uh oh, it looks like I am rambling now,.............

Oscar, thank you for the kind words and I would agree that 1996 WTKS was the best so far! I have a 1995 open currently and it is not as good as the previous! I have several Grey labels left and will open them as one gets emptied!

Next time your over remind me to let you try the one open on the bar! I found some ild 500ml tax stamp Old Forester Bonded and some BHC I.W.Harper 15/80. I did not need either so I left them! The Bonded Forester had tax stamp 500ml and 750 ml. If anyone needs any of these let me know!

Cheers!

AC

Picked up a few Pappy 15's to bunker up with....

Pappy's a popular guy today, I just picked up my first Pappy 15 at Keystone Liquors in Bardstown for $48.29...I was pleased that I found it since it is scarce in Louisville these days.

I'm looking forward to seeing you and the brothers while on vacation next week!

We're on vacation in Myrtle Beach this week and I found a really nice liquor in the area. Their website said that they had ORVW 15/107 but the manager said that their site is out of date. :hot: They've got Lot B, Pappy 15 and 20 and ORVW 10/90 instead though the prices on the Van Winkle stuff are nothing stellar.

I ended up with an ORVW 10/90 and it's darn good. :yum: It won the lottery since it has a screw top and I can transport a partial bottle of it 700 miles back home without spilling it all over the trunk of the car.

They do have the the entire 2007 BTAC (the manager said that they got South Carolina's entire allotment) along with a couple of 375's of the Cab Franc BTex, though the BTex is way out of my price range for the size.

I'm torn between the BTAC ER17, Saz18 and the Thomas Handy Sazerac since I only want to take one other bottle home with me. I've got a sneaking suspicion that I may end up with more than one take home.

I stopped at my neighborhood Spec's Liquor in downtown Houston and picked up two bottles of Old Grand-Dad 114 for $20.95 each. Later on I intend to crack one of these bottles, fill up one of my 1963 West Virginia Centennial rocks glasses with ice and pour away--a great summer drink will then await me.

With all the talk about the pewter-top WTKS, I decided to spring for some more of the 1996 issue that I've known about for awhile, at a great price too. Also picked up some more Weller Antique 1997 Louisville bottling, absolutely love the stuff.

If you have room for an extra bottle of Saz 18, buy one for me.

Gus, you better hope I don't ever roll through Houston! I'd be totally jealous, but, then again, it is Texas after all! :slappin:  Ok jokes aside Texas is by far the state with the best dusty selection and I am jealous... But, just look at it! It better have something good to offer, it's TEXAS! :slappin:  :slappin: Thank you, I'll be here all week!....

I must admit I am bitter after getting stuck in Dallas on each leg of my recent cross country trip!

BACK ON TOPIC, I bought a 1990 EW Single Barrel because I need to take things like that with me when I move back to Oregon soon. Gus, all the jokes aside, I wouldn't be leaving any WTKS from 96 or L'ville Weller Antique sitting on shelves but that's just me!

Well, obviously y'all fail to understand the type of community we have here. Just a few weeks ago one of the Houston members was kind enough to tell me where there were plenty of dusties. I was only in for a few hours, but managed to pick up about a case of great labels. The thing is...I left plenty on the shelves for that member to retrieve at his leasure, also letting him know what I saw and where to find them. That's how it is done here.

Sorry you had a bad time in your airport stop, though I am not sure how that really affects your opinion of the State. The people in Texas will take care of each other like no other place, so come on down and stay a while.....then, I think you will understand.

and O', there are a few more Louisville bottles on their way to Mi. courtesy of Texas.

Did I miss out on something here?

Hey Jeff, can I get in on these bottles that are going to MI?
