Finally opened an I.W. Harper BiB '57/'62 only to confirm that it has been cork-tainted. It's a real shame, because I got some delicious caramelized cotton candy notes underneath the somewhat sour dirt of the cork. I haven't poured it out yet, but I'm pretty sure that's where it's headed. I'd kind of like to hold on to it long enough to get a second opinion from a fellow bourbonian.

On Saturday I took advantage of having a few buddies over to knock back a handful of glasses of OGD 86 bottled sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. My friends are not regular whiskey drinkers, but each of them agreed this OGD was the best whiskey they ever drank. I can't believe this stuff used to be sold for $5.99; soft and mellow with rye sparkles glinting evenly throughout the entire sip, from the nose through the finish. It's just a really gentle pleaser of a whiskey, and it's somewhat heartbreaking that I can't just go to the store and pickup more.

Yesterday I got on the ER10 train. It's a Binny's barrel, and while it's not as good as past years' barrels, it's opened up a bit over the last few weeks and was not as disappointing as my initial judgment of it when first opened.

After a very long and busy four days, I'm treating myself to a nice healthy pour of ER 101. :yum: Joe

OF Signature to start the night off. Not tasting very good today, but I'm sure my palate is just a bit off. Typically I enjoy this pour.

I don't mix whiskey all that often but had a craving for a mixed drink on ice to beat the heat. I don't keep too much soda around but did find a Blue Sky all natural lemon lime (Sprite basically). I mixed that with some Willett 3 year rye. I am not a fan of bourbon and coke at all, but this one turned out really tasty. I might have this again sometime.

RB&F 1792.

It's been open for a few weeks and I'm liking it better now. It could pass for a cousin of 4R.

Started off with a Weller 12. Dammit, I just can't get into this whiskey. It just seems too thin, to me. And, nothing to the finish, except for some astringency. I'll take the Antique, (7 yr or NAS) any day. So, moved over to an old reliable and favorite: OCPR Slope Shoulder. Much better. The world is right, again. Well, sorta. I do have to listen to the Braves on the radio playing in Seattle, tonight. Have I mentioned before, that I hate Inter-league baseball....;)

Tried my hand at a mixed drink. It was awful (don't tell anyone that I dumped it.)

Thankfully, a 2010 GTS has washed it out of mouth (and has saved the day.)

Wife seen somewhere about mixing woodford, pom juice and lemonade. Didnt have any woodford so i tried one with makers, one with OGD and one with WT honey. She really liked the one with WT honey. I must say it wasnt to bad so i made one for myself. Now its on to some BT for me.

The bottle of Weller 12 I bought about 6 months ago was not anything special. Both OWA NAS and Weller Reserve had much more flavor and a longer finish.Hopefully it was just a bad bottle. But Weller12 is about $38 a 750 and OWA and Weller Reserve are about $22.

If I see Weller 12 on sale I will give it another try.

Regards,Mike

Not strictly a bourbon, but some early 80's Dickel black label. This bottling has a winy, rich quality which is special. Like a Madeira bourbon, sort of.

Some EWSB '01 this evening, I'll probably do some '99 too since it's open and sort of compare them.

Finishing up with a pour of Benchmark Single Barrel. Very clean and crisp, tonight. Touch of cinnamon, mid-palate. Not booming on the finish, but it certainly is lingering nicely. I'll have to check my notes, but this seems different from the last pour from this bottle. But, I ain't complaining, as it's nice.

I'm sitting at the computer savoring several pours of Four Roses Single Barrel. Might have a pour of Angels Envy for a nightcap.

I've decided to have as many pours as possible before August 22 - the day nursing classes start. I'm guessing I won't have much time for imbibing after that. Tonight started with HH White Label BIB, followed by OWA, and finished up with BT. A tasty evening ...
