The last gristly, char-filled, spicy pour of a bottle of 2010 TH Handy sits in my glass as I sit in front of the outdoor fireplace on a cool evening. Glorious, glorious, whiskey. As I sip this, I begin to think of the future of the Saz 18 label once the tanked whiskey is gone. I feel really comfortable that if an 18 yr version of this Handy is tabbed to fill that label, then we will have a very good chance of a suitable replacement.

I did that the other night too, VSOF then Weller 12. It was a nice progression I thought.

I think you've inspired me to do it the other way tonight.

The Weller being so much sweeter, it was like dinner followed by dessert!

Having a little VOB for the first time. Distinctive and, as everybody has said, a great value.

Also had to have a snort of Mellow Corn. It's pretty good, I've had Platte Valley which is 3 y/o 80 proof, and I have to say I think the extra 20 degrees of proof probably adds more than the additional year in the barrel.

Trying another bottle of Elijah Craig 18yr Single Barrel (Barrel #3729, barreled on 11-28-1989). The nose is incredible with lots of honey and vanilla. As for the taste it is definitely on the oakey side. I don't think it's too much but is definitely more than I'm used to.

This morning I did a threesome (bourbon of course).

PVW15 followed by Lot B, and FR LE 2011, all good to great bourbons on their own.

PVW15 killed. Lot B was very mild following PVW15 but I wanted to experience it this way.

Weller 12 followed by VSOF. The W12 I have is so smooth and drinkable, not much complexity. The follow up had much more going on, I could taste the sweetness, but also the oak and a few other flavors I can't remember this morning.

The progression was just as good this way.

Watching the SEC championship game--LSU v. GA. LSU has a net 12 yards in the first half. Not a good way to prove you are #1.

Good news is, the OGD 114 does not disappoint. Reminds me of my grandmother's Southern jam cake. Lots of citrus, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, with caramel frosting. Mmm, mmm, mmm! Love that OGD! (And grandma, too, though gone these 30 years.)

Limited selection at the hotel bar tonight, so limited, I even gifted the bartender a bottle of bitters, they were out the previous night.

But the Jack Daniels old fashions are flowing, and the prime rib is tasty, so I can't complain too much.

And the in-laws are picking up the tab for the weekend to boot!!

So believe me, i'm really not complaining......Plus, picked up a bottle of Baby Saz for latter, once my little guy goes down.

As a side note, last night at the bar my brother in law mentions how much he like the bottle of Pappy 20 I gifted him and his lovely bride on their wedding day. She pipes in, "it was sooo good!!" And he mentions about having to look around for a bottle. Good luck was my reply. But it made me feel great about being able to share such a wondering gift with somebody who truely appreciated it.

What is better than that?

B

Great story! As much fun as getting a gift may be, nothing warms the heart more than giving a gift that is truly and visibly appreciated.

EW eggnog with a little EWSB 93 thrown in. Deeelicious!

A person after my own heart! I picked up half a case of the EW nog, and also spike it up a bit.

Hidden

Put up some Christmas decorations and now watching a little football on TV. Had the gf pick out a bourbon to surprise me with and she poured some PVW15...very tasty this afternoon!

My wife's sister just got married and her new brother in law brought a bottle of George Stagg 2011 147 proof to share with the grooms. I had about 3 ounces and I almost wish I'd never tried it. It has such a unique taste I want some for myself and it's nearly impossible to find around here.

2010 William Larue Weller. I turned 40 in July, my son turned 21 in September. He acted sort of strange around my birthday, no card, barely a mention. Then at his birthday, as I gave him a bottle of Ritt BIB, he gave me this bottle of WLW. He held out until he could purchase something special. Beyond any tasting notes or specific opinions on the '10 edition of WLW, this bottle is very special and will be cherished for a long time.

Four Roses Barrel Proof MAWLS OESO Paw's and Claws #2...this bottle is extremely interesting. The mouthfeel is very creamy and does a very nice job of coating the pallet. Huge red fruit on entry with elements spice and caramel flowing throughout. 45-60 second finish with no heat or dryness to be seen...man for 113 proof this stuff is incredibly easy to drink. I've had a couple different 40th Rutledge bottles and IMO this one is better then the two that I've had...the OESO receipe just is different compared to everything else from Four Roses and totally unique when looking at what other distilleries are producing. Bravo to all involved in selecting this incredible bottle of bourbon!

Finished off the last of a bottle of Bulleit Rye tonight. I've already opened another one and started on it. This is a rye that I will always have in the rotation. Tasty!
