tanstaafl2
The newest CEHT has hit town. It is a "small batch" BIB bourbon and probably what was left over from what wasn't used for the Single Barrel and Barrel Proof bottlings. On the plus side it arrives with a much friendly price tag of $39.99. OK, so it may well be little different than regular Buffalo Trace at higher proof and in a fancier package and there may well be better stuff out there for less money but I have liked this line for the most part and was pretty much going to get at least one no matter what. So the lower price is a welcome change! On a similar line the previous CEHT Rye is still on the shelf all over town at $69.99 and up. I liked it but don't know that I will get more anytime soon, especially at that price.

HighInTheMtns
Tarheel,Could you tell us a bit more about this one? This is the first I've heard of a barrel-strength, single-barrel Russell's Reserve. Is it age-stated, too? I'm going to guess it's a distillery-only bottling, but even so, it'd be great to hear your thoughts on it when you open the bottle.http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18760Cheers! Kalessin
Picked up another bottle of FRSmB LE 2012. I've now got one open and two waiting in the wings. I'm thinking of picking up more, but this is an expensive buying habit...
Old Lamplighter
Came across something I had not seen before: Smooth Ambler, retailer private bottling, 7yo, cask strength 121 proof. I was under the impression they had limited quantities at present while aging some of their own production. I suppose there has been enough acquired to release some cask strength barrels. Anyhow, at $37, couldn't walk out without some. Even with unknown sources, a barrel strength > 120 proof at less than half the cost of a BTAC high proofer is a no-brainer for me. JPBoston
My wife bought me my first ORVW 10/107 for my bday today!! I'm fighting off a cold at the moment, but I had to take one small sip from a snifter --- and wow, it lives up to the hype!! Very sweet with a very pleasant, blooming warmth (not alcohol type burn). The hard part will be to not waste any more while I have this cold so I can enjoy the more subtle flavors.

I think that "blooming warmth" aspect is one of the most missed upon descriptors of bourbon. I think we all fall prey to the idea that the "wamth" as you described it, is a foul "hotness", or "alcohol burn", or worse!...Not always...Rather, it many times is exactly as you describe..."blooming warmth"...And, part of a really good whiskey. Unfortunately oftentimes, they are seen as one-and-the-same. Nice job. Now, I have to open one of those ORVW's! :toast:
Tony
Got myself my first Evan Williams Single Barrel and another PHC2012. Got an email to save $5.00 on a bottle so figured I would try the EWSB. Best regards, Tony
HighInTheMtns
Tony, I got that email too and I respect you for making the decision not to use the rebate on the PHC. You've got me thinking about doing the same thing, instead of sending in the receipt from the PHC I bought today.
