We have 10-15 people come in daily asking for PVW. Why would we call out one particular person?
You would not and that is very easy to see. His lawyer has to put on some kind of defense and looks like his defense is to say that you/your employees are lying.

The average person understands the liquor laws only so much as they affect him directly. They know there's a drinking age and they have to show ID, but some people even seem vague about that, considering how many times I've seen people who were probably old enough arguing with a poor store clerk because they forgot their ID.

Most people, for example, don't even know that stores must refuse to sell you alcohol if you already seem to be inebriated.

That alcohol can't be returned, i.e., sold back to a store, is something very few people realize. If I can sell my old CDs and DVDs, why can't I sell unopened bottles of liquor? Many people are surprised when informed that private citizens can't legally sell their unopened bottles. A few years ago, so many people in Kentucky were running classified ads offering to sell Maker's Mark commemoratives that the ABC ran an ad reminding them that such sales are prohibited. Every time it comes up here there are people who can't be convinced it's illegal to sell or trade whiskey between collectors.

As for this guy, Bardstown school principals have a knack for getting in trouble around this time of year. In 2007, Bardstown principal Paul Schum was arrested for solicitation for prostitution when he was caught in drag on the west side of Louisville. He said it was a Halloween costume. He resigned but the case was later dismissed for insufficient evidence.

Also, for those who don't know, E-town is the closest 'big' city to Bardstown, about 20 minutes away. Personally, I believe the guy is probably telling the truth. I'm sure the 'witnesses' heard 'Van Winkle' and their inner Sherlock Holmes took over from there.

I think it's just human nature to be surprised about legal restrictions when folks don't think they're doing anything wrong.

Could be a case of misunderstanding or CYA.

I require my employees to report suspicious activities. This fell in that category. They took statements from my employees and thought the lead was good enough to release the video.

I don't have an audio recording of it so it will remain a what he said vs what she heard case if he is cleared.

No one has done anything wrong here and it will certainly sort itself out. Putting the video out certainly got the guy identified quickly. It's a good reminder to all of us that our public comings and goings are pretty much public, as there are cameras everywhere.

Maybe this is just me, but if I went into a store that is reputed to have a very good bourbon selection, and I was looking for bourbon. I wouldn't have come out empty handed. Do you think I've ever came out of the Liquor Barn empty handed?

im with you, Eric. Id have reported it too, it seems fishy. If he is telling the truth, he has nothing to worry about.

but, to disagree on another topic.....ive come out of liquor stores empty handed probably more often than ive come out with a purchase. I tend to have one set thing I am looking for when I go in, and if they dont have it, i leave and go somewhere else. Looking for ECBP earlier this year, and looking for WFE these days, you can imagine how often i leave empty handed. Sometimes, i just give up and get something new that catches my attention though, as in the Ezra 101 i have on hand now.

I do the same.. If I buy something at every store im searching i will either go broke or not have money to buy what i am actually looking for... Once in a while ill just buy a tall boy to at least throw the store a bone. Another fun thing about searching high and low is discovering other htf your not looking for... and then you gotta make a impulse buy.. haha

So what you're saying is we should expect to see the you on the local news soon? :)

nope. you wont find me asking for any BTAC, Pappy, etc. I refuse to play the $50+ game, so that saves me from that aspect of the bourbon 'hobby'. more for you guys, right?

Not to steer this further off topic, but

Yeah I leave empty handed as much as I leave with more than I bargained for. Today I went in a store expecting nothing much. Left with a couple bottles including a saz18 I wouldn't have got unless I happened to ask and the person knew what I meant. Also gave me a lead on another bottle near by. Win win. IMO

I go in, look, and walk out without buying something all the time. Not often in one of my regular shops, but if I have the time I'll just stop in any random liquor store i happen to be driving by just to check out their selection. Finally started keeping a list of where to buy what, as I've noticed prices varying by as much as $10 even on basic bottles you can get most anywhere. I may not buy right away, but I know where to go back if need be.

around here, if you tend to get the regular stuff (no LE editions, BTAC, Pappy, etc), the local pharmacies often have the best prices, and routinely have sales, but they dont advertise them. Often, i stop in just to see whats new, or on sale. Thats how i found the 13 bottles of KC120 at half price markdown to clear the stock for discontinuing. I often find half price clearances there of wines my wife likes. One of them even gives an additional 10% off for 6+ bottle purchases. I dont know if other states have alcohol sales in pharmacies though. Walgreens used to, years ago, but stopped years ago. Interesting....from what i remember of history, Prohibition made Walgreens the large chain it is these days by selling medicinal alcohol.

$26,000 worth?!? That's got to be, what, three, maybe four bottles?

I was surprised they used retail value. If it was a drug bust, that number would be 150k.

Ha very true. They do always use street value?

I wasn't trying to say nobody ever runs in and out without finding something. The only time that would happen to me would be if the selection was lacking and or prices too high. I don't say to myself, "I must find X, and only X". In my mind I have probably half a dozen current bottlings I would like to find, plus many dusties that are highly unlikely.

  • 4 weeks later...

That did take quite a while. I am shocked to learn that a high school principal did not pull a huge inside job...at a god damned distillery! Real crack investigative team down there in Kentucky. Good thing he was ratted out.
