What bourbon are you drinking? - Winter '13/'14

Opened a newly purchased Barterhouse. Very, very nice nose on this whiskey. That gorgeous rickhouse smell, some dark cherry, leather, and a freshness that belies its age. Over the palate it begins to show it's full age like a 20 year old bourbon should, and without any arid over-oakiness or harsh tannins. It's pretty much what you would expect from a bourbon well treated for two decades in a barrel. Some dark chocolate notes work their way in, but that's about it. On the thin side, but honestly, most extra aged bourbons play out this way to me. Unfortunately, nothing really jumps out at me to make it memorable other than the dark chocolate. The finish falls of rather quickly, but is pleasant enough.

All in all a solid, if not inspiring 20 year old whiskey. For a whiskey of this age, the $70 price of admission was fair by any of my standards in today's environment. But, the beautiful nose alone, makes this whiskey a "feel good" buy for me. I do look forward to further tastings with Barterhouse to see if they will reveal a taste and finish that can live up to what I experienced from its nose this evening.

Joe, i'm so happy to read your notes on this one. I've got a bottle being held for me, and i was wishy-washy on whether I made the right decision on asking them to hold it. (I hate to ask, then back out, so I try to never do that). Wish some more folks on thios forum would report on Old Blowhard.

good to hear on the Barterhouse review, Joe. Even I think $70 is more than fair for a 20 year old whiskey, and would consider it if I ever saw it.

havent had any bourbon tonight, but the wife and I went out for an ice cream tonight. For those in Louisville, there is a homemade ice cream family owned chain of stores called Comfy Cow. They have both a "bourbon ball' ice cream made with Old Forester and chocolate chips, and a "Southern Delight" (or something like that) that was made with Old Forester, pecan pie pieces and chocolate chips. I couldnt decide, so I got a scoop of both on a waffle cone. Both were great, but the bourbon ball was better. Good stuff!

I finished off a Rock Hill Farms with a tiny pour, not sure where I'll venture next but it might be Stagg Jr as well. Or maybe Bookers to try and knock that off the shelf soon too. I'm in purge mode to make room.

HH blend tonight. Emptied bottles of their last dregs (2-3 oz. each) of OS6BIB, EC12, HMcK10BIB into a screw top bottle and let it sit for a couple weeks, to meld. Pretty good by itself, but tonight I added a splash of ECBP1. Somewhere around 107 pf, and terrific.

I was all wound up and preparing to have my ass handed to me for my first comprehensive nursing exam over the whole program, and was happy to get a strong grade on it after all. So afterward, I ran some errands, got a haricut, and had some fish n chips at an irish pub and thought, with all the WT talk in the threads lately, that I'd give that a shot again, neat. Honestly, I found it rather enjoyable.
