2014 Four Roses LE Single Barrel

I did a side by side comparison with this years limited edition to a Beltramo's private selection OESF 10 year 7 month 58% abv. My LE bottle is 54.4% abv. This was a blind tasting and these are my final notes. The LE's nose is more floral and sweet, a hint of some herbs. Beltramo's has just a hint of that floral note but smells more of the traditional butterscotch. Tasting wise, the private selection has some dark fruit taste, heat and spice from the mid palate finishing with some clove/cinnamon and little mint. Slightly dry as well. It's overall still smooth even though there is heat even through the finish. The LE tasting was quite different when tasting side by side. More sweet candy and hints of citrus notes than dark fruits. Smooth throughout with just a little heat on the finish. Slightly peppery at the end, more like white pepper near the finish and ending with a little clove and oak dryness. Interesting enough to me, the LE is 11 years while the private selection is 4-5 months younger yet tastes more dry. I ended up picking the LE as the better pour between the two. My private selection was about $40 less than the Limited Edition and based on sipping it neat, it was worth the extra cost. I do think the private selection is good and would do well with some water while the LE may lose some of it's depth very quickly if watered down. That tasting will be saved for another day.

There are quite a few of the 2014 4R1B LE's listed by people in KY on Craigslist.

Prices aren't that unreasonable given the demand and the short supply.

Glad they are making them available since most of us can't get any.

Thanks, I don't expect to see any of this LE, but I do have a couple bottles from HW 29-3V (OBSF), 11y 2m. That's as close as I'll get, most likely.

I wonder if all the LE barrels are being pulled from HW?

Hit the Seattle area but was gone in a day. Wen to my local Total Wine who showed stock and let me place an order but was cleaned out. Said someone came in an bought all the bottles earlier. Same story at other area locations. If said purchaser was a flipper I hope they choke on it. These things never end well for the speculators. See tulips, internet stocks, high rise condos, et al.

It's on the retailer for not limiting bottle purchases. Letting someone buy them all makes for one happy customer and a bunch of pissed off customers.

Got a couple bottles of this a few days ago. Really liked it so far. I got a lot of sweetness and citrusy notes from it. Some pepper but not overwhelming. Only had a couple pours so far and will have to revisit. It is easy drinking as well for it's proof.

You cannot please everyone. Get used to it. Those to who call stores and expect to get "calls" are the ones who inevidibly miss out. As a retailer, your choice is to sell to people who actually show up in the store or those who try to phone jokey it. I certainly wouldn't sell anything to anyone who doesn't have the wherewithal to at least get their butt into my store.

You know what's funny about those damn, dirty speculators? NO ONE ever complains when they're able to find something they couldn't despite all their efforts and positive intentions. I haven't had a single person get pissed at me for selling them something they've been trying to find for months, perhaps years. You simply have no idea how the free market works if you EXPECT to buy anything for whatever price you think is "fair." So when the crash comes, find a spec and give them a nice, warm hug as they'e the ones putting up the risk and capital to put a bottom in prices.

I agree 100%. But that's not what happens. Whenever you have a market where there's either a run on something [like Weller 12 yr], a perceived shortage [Elmer T Lee] or a full on scarcity [bTAC] you will have speculation and arbitrage.

People think the market exists because it's fair and that's nonsense. People think the market *should* reward those who have it's best interests in mind. Again, nonsense. The speculators exist in support of all markets. Who do you think will buy the bubble top when Pappy 23 sells for $20K at auction or George T Stagg at $2000 per bottle? It's coming and it will be denied every step of the way just like all bubbles. The price of gold went from $400 to $800 in 30 days in late 1979. Some internet stocks fell 40% in 1999 and then turned around and trippled into 2000, this after already going up 10x.

"Flipping" will die one day, but not anytime soon - there's still too much supply.

My feeling on speculators is that are similar to any invasive species damaging an otherwise healthy ecosystem. Kudzu is a favorite comparison, due to bourbon's southern roots. Speculators ("kudzu" from here on out) invade a market and out-compete people just trying to enjoy a product, and they take up an inordinate amount of market share compared to the rest of us. If what most kudzu were doing was legal, then I would probably be less annoyed. However, I doubt many of these kudzu have licenses to sell their wares OR report their earnings on their taxes, so . . . yeah. They pretty much just show up uninvited and ruin it for everyone else.

I hate to say it, but Diageo's generally outlandish prices on rare releases like Port Ellen and Brora almost stack up as reasonable compared to illegal kudzu markup on a lot of bourbons.
