clindt
I agree. $150 would buy a few really nice bottles of bourbon with well known pedigrees.

zillah
What if all the conflicting information was just a marketing ploy to make sure that rumors circulated ad infinitum? Seemed to work for Michter's. I bet Kentucky Owl knows exactly why they released such conflicting info. Slap a few names in the story like Jim Rutledge to help legitimize the whiskey's provenance for a few hopeful fools and let all the nerds and collectors use the internet to let the rumor mill flourish. So whoo whoo is gonna bite? Owl not.

Max Power
I had a pour of it last night. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. For the proof and age, it's probably a $45-50 type bourbon. It was woodier than I thought it would be and actually pretty dry and spicy. I'd drink it again, but I'd never pay the retail for a bottle. Assuming for a moment that the talk about there originally being 8 barrels is actually true, they may have dumped the contents of those into 5 fresh barrels for a time. If so, that would explain the relatively high bottle count for 5 barrels. It would also allow for a VERY rough estimate as to age.PLEASE NOTE THIS IS BLATANT SPECULATION BASED ON INFORMATION THAT WAS LIKELY BAD! Owl not having anyone mistaking my fly by night interpretation as anything other than that.

Heaven Hill puts out ECBP at twice the age and a much higher proof for around $50 retail so Owl should be worth less than that.I think we're being given the bird. bin31z
I just looked at their fb page. Its just full of marketing bullcrap. People are coming to their page saying they tasted over 160 bourbons in their life and the Owl is the best they ever had...really?? They have a bunch of pictures of the owl alongside pappy at side by side tasting to legitimize it. I rolled my eyes so hard.

Just saw this on Instagram: " I heard this is a batch of hand picked barrels by Jim for a special bottling, special extra aged barrels that Jim has set aside." Heard from whoooooo??? garbanzobean
Three years ago the bottlers of this bourbon would have "absentmindedly" mentioned that the Van Winkle family helped them select barrels instead of Jim Rutledge when asked by visitors. "Help" is a pretty broad term. Heck, if I were buying barrels of bourbon to bottle, I could easily drop by the distillery and ask Mr. Rutledge if he had an barrels for sale. Assuming he said "no," he technically would have helped me out, albeit by eliminating a possibility.Or am I being too cynical?

squire
Why don't you guys post on those medias the absurdity of the notion that the Kirin Corporation allows one of their employees (Mr. Rutledge) to act as a private consultant using their facilities. Was he a paid advisor and did his work conflict with four roses and Kirin? Doubtful. What ky owl does next is what matters. They will sell every bottle (1500) at 160 each of this batch. Can they source enough barrels to keep the brand viable? Will people continue to pay $150 plus for a bottle?

Will people continue to pay $150 plus for a bottle?Great points. If the bourbon is above average and they can hit the same flavor profile, probably have made a niche for themselves. I think the limited nature of it will support what I think is too high of a price tag. People love their "unobtainium", and 1500 bottles is a smart number (enough to get around a wee bit and make some noise without being all over the place and easy to come by). FRSmBLE was what - 8,000 bottles? To me, the limited number doesn't raise the value (hell, every "single barrel" on the shelf is one of 250 or less - quick, BUY THEM ALL!), but it sure does to a lot of other folks. I like the thought of people getting to their store though and saying "Screw that George T Stagg - I want the GOOD STUFF! Get me that OWL! Hell, they bottled 10k or more of that Stagg stuff, who needs that?!"
